PSA: FB Messenger now forces new users to create Facebook account

    Posted: 25 Dec 2019 05:12 PM PST

I was trying to set up a 2nd account on Messenger and there's no longer an option for signing up without Facebook. You're now forced to create a FB profile.

I was wondering if anyone else is experiencing this or has gotten around it.

Sony Mobile removes Android 10 upgrade page that contained too many negative comments

    Posted: 25 Dec 2019 01:29 AM PST

Many users complained that the flagship phone Xperia XZ1 only received one major upgrade.

This was the link removed: https://blogs.sonymobile.com/2019/11/15/which-sony-products-will-receive-android-10-upgrades/

You can still find the archived page at archive.org.

EDIT: as you can see from this video, Sony removed this discussion just a week after publishing the post in November. As noted by archon810 in the comments, they retired the whole blog this month, 9 days ago.

How keep, tasks, calender and assistant should be integrated.

    Posted: 25 Dec 2019 01:13 AM PST

I always see people complaining about Google keep not being integrated with Google assistant or Google calender.

I think keep is just a note taking app, it doesn't need reminders at all. It just creates unnecessary mess. If you want reminders, use tasks app. Although Google keep and tasks app currently suck. Here's how entire system could be simplified.

    KEEP

    1. Add formatting options ( Bold / Italics / Underline / Strikethrough / text size ) and multi mode edit on keep. Basically let me add text, images, lists, voice notes everything in one note. ( iOS notes app does this best ).

Current implementation - when you click " checkboxes " , it converts the text you're typing into check list.
Suggestion - Add a check list below the text, like you can with a number list.

    2. Use keep as default for all the lists. When you ask assistant to " add lube to groceries list " or " add annihilation to watch list " , it adds those entries to Google keep.

    3. Make the list view better. Currently if you have an image attached to your note, it appears as a giant thumbnail and text is written below it. It should have image on the right and text on the left side ( like how relay or reddit shows posts ).

Basically copy iOS' notes app. With Assistant integration for lists like I mentioned in first point

    TASKS & CALENDER

    1. Change the layout of the app. When you open the app, it says " today's tasks " and it displays everything you have to do from all the " folders " , when you tick a task, it gets greyed out. You can create folders for different topics like.

HOME - clean table, fix cabinet, etc.
VACATION - buy ANC headphones, borrow that book from Billie, give spare key to neighbor, buy shane Dawson's make-up.
WORK - buy printer ink, fire receptionist, issue penny stocks, get an appointment with Belfort.
REMINDERS - has all the entries from Google assistant ( check first point ). Add timely reminders ( monthly / quarterly / annually ) for bill reminders. Eg : pay for WiFi every month, drink water every hour, pay rent every 3 months, etc.

    2. Use tasks as default for all reminders, when you ask assistant to " remind me to get a haircut " or " remind me to breakup " it adds those to Google tasks app.

    3. Add tasks triggers ( location & WiFi etc ). So when you're in a certain location, say work or home or when you're driving etc. it reminds you to do something. Also add ability to remind you something, when you're texting someone in messages app, i love this feature in iOS. It could also work with assistant " remind me to tell joe to vote for kanye next year " so it ads an entry in tasks, and when you're texting / emailing / calling him, a notification pops up reminding you about it.

    4. Better calender integration. Show all entries in calender. When you click on a date and tap add reminder, it opens up tasks app. For birthdays & anniversaries, add their entries in contacts app, so it shows up in calender.

Users of gesture navigation with 3rd party launchers (Nova) - what is your experience?

    Posted: 24 Dec 2019 04:16 PM PST

December update finally brought gesture navigation in 3rd party launchers to older Pixel phones. So, I made a switch back from pixel launcher to Nova.

But, gesture navigation has been subpar on Nova. I'm not complaining about lack of recents. Gestures themselves seem to work very poorly. The swipe up doesn't always minimize apps. Swipe left scrolls through multiple apps instead of one. Overall, not a very good experience.

Any other users found the same? Or, are people generally satisfied?

Think I know why Google didn't put an ultrawide in p4

    Posted: 25 Dec 2019 02:36 PM PST

So they wanted to train their computation algorithms to get better pics on zoom so what better than put a lens that can zoom. Millions of people would be then training their AI to make pictures better while zoomed in and then it sets stage for the gradual evolution which is the ultrawide I believe will be in the next pixel. So once they can get that out they'll have a spectacular camera with computational ability spanning the 10x or whatever and ultrawide images as well. This should aid at taking even better overall shots! I think this was their strategy.
