Posted: 11 Dec 2019 06:41 PM PST https://i.imgur.com/nXvuMxB.png This is what you see when you open an app that was updated for the new biometrics api. Pretty neat that samsung didn't forget about this even though they ditched those sensors for recent phones. I don't remember iris scanner ever really working for anything besides samsung pay and knox secure folder. I bet most ppl didn't even bother setting it up, which might be why they ditched it. I never really used it due to it not being amazing with glasses. Anyhow, samsung does have the ui done in case they do get on the 'face unlock' train with apple and google. Now I'm curious if the secure face unlock tech on the mate 20 supports the biometrics api now those are on android 10? [link] [comments]

Thoughts on the Pixel 3A after a week of use Posted: 12 Dec 2019 12:30 AM PST My Pixel 3A has arrived on December 5, ordered from Amazon when it was $299 on Black Friday. A good deal overall. This is my first Pixel phone, as I come from an aging Samsung S8 and I wanted a fresher - and simpler, why not - take on Android. And reliable updates, of course. Now I understand the hype and praise around the pixel phones. Everything is so smooth and fluid, it feels faster than my S8, even though on paper the S8 has better specs. The Snapdragon 670 shows his limitations only when taking multiple photos quickly, when there's just slight delay before processing them. But then again this happens on many phones. I don't game on my phone so I'm not interested in benchmarks scores. On the other hand, I read quite a lot (of eboos) on my phone before falling asleep. I was a little worried about the battery life, but it's more than OK, as you can see for yourself. 2 days of normal use, 1 day of heavy use. And of course the pictures taken look better than the S8's. PS Bonus points to the Google team for not preinstalling the Facebook app on the Pixel. [link] [comments]
Screen Saver: Underutilized feature? Posted: 11 Dec 2019 04:17 PM PST I remember when the Nexus 4 first came out and they showed off screensavers on the wireless charger. It looked cool, but ever since that moment, I've hardly seen the screen saver feature used in Android. I feel like this is a potential that has not been used. Maybe people just don't care? Always on Display and showing the time and notification icons is nice, but why not allow my phone to show other things? For instance a news app could be used to flash news stories/headlines or anything of interest to you. A sports app could flash a sports ticker, etc. I also remember there was this Aerial app that had the Apple TV screensavers and that app was mainly for setting wallpapers--but if you really want to copy Apple TV, why not set them as a screen saver? I believe that app since has pulled all the Apple TV videos probably due to a C&D or whatever, but the point remains--whatever live scenes they have could make for a nice screen saver. What are your thoughts /r/android? Is this an underutilized feature? For those of you who don't now what I'm talking about, the feature is located in Settings > Display > Screen Saver [link] [comments]
Pixel 4XL very average upgrade to 2XL Posted: 11 Dec 2019 06:17 PM PST I'm a few days into my new 4XL, I thought I might cast my vote in the "not really worth it" category. Face unlock is the real killer for me, I upgraded primarily because I work with my hands a lot so the fingerprint sensor on the 2XL isn't always reliable when my hands are dirty or scuffed up. Face unlock was supposed to help with that, however it's much more unreliable than the fingerprint sensor. The past few mornings, checking my phone in bed works maybe one in 20 tries, not sure if it's the angle or the pillow, but it's seriously annoying. As others have noted, the natural movement with the sensor was to unlock as you're moving the phone out of your pocket or off the table towards your face. The face unlock works reasonably well in perfect circumstances, however adds about 1 second to this process if it even works. I've found with a perfect setup the face unlock works about 70% of the time, the rest requiring a readjustment of the phone or my face adding more time and frustration to the simple task of checking the phone. Everything else is not really of consequence, screen, camera, other crap, nothing is really that much better that I care. Phone is thicker which feels clunky. I think I'll return it and stick with my 2XL for another year, I was really hoping this'd be a decent upgrade... It's not. [link] [comments] |
