Does Google enforce any update guidelines for Android tvs?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2019 03:55 AM PST

I've seen a lot of posts here about Bravia tvs not being updated in years. I was just wondering if there are certain update guidelines that should be followed before Google certifies a brand with Android tv? Like the manufacturer has to provide at least one major os upgrade and consistent security updates?

Wasn't there an Apple TV+ app on Sony TVs that was then pulled? Has there been any news on the app?

Can I play local HDR mkv files on Fire TV Cube 2nd gen?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2019 06:13 AM PST

I am thinking of upgrading my 2nd gen Fire TV box which has 4k support, but no HDR.

For Cyber Monday (and hopefully for Boxing day as well), the Fire TV Cube has been reduced to £80. So, I can trade my old FireTV for it. I want to upgrade because I can't get Apple TV on the Fire TV box, neither does my 2017 Samsung 4K TV is getting it. I also want to play my local collection of 4K HDR mkv files.

Does anyone here own the Fire TV Cube and has used it to stream or play local files - 4k, HDR content - from a USB drive, either from a SMB, using Plex, Kodi, VLC - and does it buffer or have issues with codecs?

My overall choice for sticking with the Amazon devices is because of the integration with Alexa, and Amazon Prime, and that I can still sideload apks if I wanted to.

Hope someone here can help me. Thanks.

BBC iPlayer App keeps getting "disabled" somehow

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 09:54 AM PST

I've had the iPlayer app installed on my Shield for the last year until some time in the last few weeks when it just disappeared from my app shortcuts. I went into the full apps list and it was not there, so I looked on the Play Store and found that it was installed, but seemingly disabled as indicated by the "Enable" button. Clicking that and the app appears in the full apps list again, and I can add to shortcuts again. However this only seems to last for that usage session and next time Shield wakes up from sleep I have to do it all again. Any ideas what's going on please?

    Reolink monitor on Android TV

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 11:25 AM PST

I plan to use an Android TV device plugged in into a dumb monitor so I can view all my PoE Reolink cameras 24/7. I managed to run the Reolink app in Android tv even when it's only meant for mobile. It works fine. But I'm not sure it supports more than 4 cameras at the same time on the screen. Does anyone know if it does?

Also, I'm using the app because so far I haven't found an Android client that stream with the same quality of the official app. TinyCam Pro supports the configuration I want for 6 cameras but the streaming of my Reolink cameras suck on it (and with official app they run super fine).

    Home Screen Channels Disappearing

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 01:12 PM PST

I have a JBL Linkbar and my home screen channels disappear all the time. It says the channel is empty and the just disappears. This has happened with Hulu, Netflix and Spotify. I'm not exactly sure what to do. Is it just my Linkbar sucking or is it a bug in Android TV?

65in Philips PFL5504, any way to record live tv?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 09:27 AM PST

So, after 2 days of scouring the internet and trying everything I can think of, I can't find a way to record live tv? Apparently Android 7.0 introduced the feature, but I can't figure out whether Android 8.0 removed it or Philips has intentionally disabled it? I've tried multiple apps and configurations and can't seem to have any luck. The tv does pause live shows and allows rewind/fast forward but there is no option to record... I've even looked at down grading to 7.0. I just feel like it should be an option? Am i missing something? Anyone about to help me out?
