Looking for tablet: really just want to read websites etc, but .. smoothly

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 05:32 AM PST

Hi there. My current tablet is a Zenpad 9 or somesuch, and I'm not happy with it. I don't need much power, I really only use it for reading the web and PDFs and occasionally a newspaper app, but it doesn't even do that well. Shuts down seemingly at random while it's left plugged in for a few days, takes forever to boot, the touchscreen is slow to respond or responds to touches that never happened, it can't scroll smoothly, the list goes on.

What I'm looking for is a tablet, preferably inexpensive, that will allow me to read text and not hate every minute of it. If that means "get a Tab from three years ago and flash it with a custom ROM" that's fine, but if I can just buy it that's preferred. What would you recommend?

Minimal rom needed, what would you recommend for Galaxy S8?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 05:03 AM PST

So, I bought a second hand Galaxy S8 SM-G950F, unlocked, and I'm also slowly starting the process of degoogling my life, as well as keeping my distance to amazon, facebook and so on, for multiple reasons.

Obviously the first step is to have an actual control of my smartphone. Usually people suggest Lineageos, which is fine, but not really my cup of tea and doesn't officially support my device anyway.

I want something more bare bones, all the fat as well as tracking apps removed, no need for fancy customization or bells and whistles.

    My use is basically

    • calls
    • texts (with ability to turn off any web link previews, this is an absolute must)
    • mail
    • maps

I think most of the time I can manage with an OSS just fine, but unfortunately there is a possibility that I might have to try to make Line or WhatsApp work too, if possible.

So far I have looked at LightROM, Hades, Ambasadii and I believe maybe King rom(?).

Anybody here have experience or opinions about these roms or other suggestions for alternatives? Any feedback on these is welcome, before I decide with which variant I start bricking my device.

Picture-in-picture option is not in the YouTube Mobile app settings for one Google account, but it *is* present for two other Google accounts (Android 10, Pixel 3)

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 05:36 AM PST

I have 3 Google accounts logged into the YouTube app on the same phone. Two of the accounts show an option to enable picture-in-picture in the accounts settings (under General), but that option isn't visible when I log in with the 3rd Google account. Picture-in-picture works successfully for those two accounts, and not for the 3rd, as you'd expect.

I have tried everything to fix this:

    • checked app permissions for PiP and draw over other apps
    • change all the other settings in the 3rd Google account to match the first two
    • uninstall YouTube app updates
    • clear the apps cache and storage
    • turn off battery optimization
    • looked through Google account settings outside of YouTube
    • restarting app and device

Can anyone help with this? Thanks

My experience with OnePlus customer support - Awful

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 11:29 AM PST

I cannot believe how awful this company's customer service is. I practically have no other recourse but to share my experience with all of you, and every single other platform I can possibly post a review on. I have never been more dissatisfied a company's customer care or resolutions to a problem. THIS isn't a budget phone, it was $800.

Rewind 6 months. I purchase my OP7 Pro directly from OnePlus, unlocked. Phone is great for maybe a month. I start experiencing signal drop shortly after using it. Before you tell me it's my carrier, I originally had an AT&T sim in the phone. Issues. Switched to T-Mobile. Still the same issues. I try network resets, and many other fixes. I still cannot reliably receive or place phone calls and texts TO THIS DAY. It'll be great for a day. Then the next day my girlfriend will get home and ask why I haven't answered her all day.

Not to mention that I cannot reliably send and receive phone calls, my phone, upon restart, show a black screen. The phone is on. Making noises. But no display. I must force reboot it sometimes 3 times in a row to get my phone to work.

Couple this with numerous Bluetooth issues - drops, 10 second delays, and outright refusal to work sometimes. I am tired of this crap.

This is regardless of Android version - Android 9, 10, etc. I have experienced a plethora of issues not even listed - but these 3 above are enough to be deal breaking.

Factory Resets. Different Versions. Disabling VOLTE. Disabling WiFi calling. Tons of other tries, no resolution.

I Call and complain once. I'm told "A Supervisor will contact you". I wait 4 days. NOTHING. I call back obviously and when I voice my concerns, I'm told there's practically nothing they will do for me.

I REALLY WANTED TO LOVE THIS PHONE. I enjoy(ed) using it so much. But I literally cannot even use it how it's intended, as a damn phone or even a media player. I'm not sending my phone in for repair and waiting 2-3 weeks to receive a repair that won't fix anything. It's junk software. Also I cannot be without a phone. Apple may not be the best company to reference, but any time I have had ground breaking issues, they take care of me AND they actually have a damn store. Even out of warranty. I DO NOT want a replacement. I DO NOT want to deal with this junk company again. I WILL be going back to Samsung or Apple, not this joke of a company.

And I could live with it, if they would just take care of me like a customer that paid them nearly $800. But they treat it like a joke. Goodbye OnePlus, you will never get another dollar or recommendation from me or my family.

Can I add BT 5.x capability to an older phone with an OTG adapter?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 10:48 AM PST

    Hello,

as in title, I'd like to buy buy and use a BT 5.x headset as they last longer and have better range than my 4,x ones, but my current phones don't support anymore than 4.x so I'm wondering if this could work.

If yes, feel free to recommend adapters, so far I've only found some for the Switch and they're $20+ dollar, I need type-C that's probably why...

    Thank you!

I bought a magnetic charger and it has messed up my charging port somehow?

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 07:02 PM PST

My phone (Pixel 2 XL) no longer works properly with a regular charger. Now when I plug in my original factory charter the phone shuts off instantly. I can wait until the phone is in the process of powering on, after the google logo turns into the spinning balls and plug in the charger at the right time and it will work, but if I plug it in when it is already on it shuts immediately. For some reason the magnetic charger still works, but it is not fast charge. Any tips on how to fix this? Can I even fix this?

Is there a Work Profile equivalent for end-users?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 10:40 AM PST

Long story short: I just started a new job that uses the G-suite, but it's a small simple IT department. So, they don't have device management setup for users. However, I really liked having an entirely separate profile on my phone for work apps (that one button vacation mode, tho!), while also being able to stay logged into the phone as one user. (I looked at adding a new user to the phone to separate stuff, but you have to completely log out of each user to switch back and forth. That's too much work.)

I'm just wondering if there are any options for replicating this experience on my side of things, within my realm of control. I would rather not have my work email and calendar and contacts muddled in with my personal ones, if I can help it all. I'm also open to your favorite non-Google email and calendar apps that play well with Google. Thanks in advance!

    Reddit issue with the S10

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 10:00 AM PST

I just upgraded to the S10 on Black Friday. I never had an issue with the official Reddit app on my S7 that I used to use, but it seems like I can't scroll down very far before I get the reddit icon saying it is loading more content, but it never loads. I googled this issue and can't find anything on it. Was wondering if anyone has had this issue also?

Tried to root my Galaxy A40 with Magisk, but I failed to enter recovery mode afterwards

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 09:47 AM PST

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHBDF9ErLkw&t=217s

Using this video, I tried to root my samsung galaxy a40.

Everything went like usual, I was able to flash the patched AP file to my phone and it was looking good. Then, sadly, when the guide said to boot into recovery (after flashing magisk) it didn't work. It just booted me into recovery mode instantly. There was also an error in the top left corner saying that VBMeta image is not signed.

Any idea how to fix this?

How to spoof apps into seeing device as another device?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 09:01 AM PST

Hey there, I was hoping to trick some apps into seeing my device as a pixel 3 or newer. I have a rooted device and read somewhere previously that this is possible. I just can not find this information anywhere for some reason. Anyone have any idea of what I could be looking for? Thanks!

Did maximum media volume get reduced?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 09:00 AM PST

I listen to music on my Samsung S8, like any normal human being, but recently I've found that the maximum audio has been greatly reduced? Is it the latest update that has decided to ruin me to listening on my headphones, straining my ears to hear the feeble blithers that they put out.

The way it used to be that if I wanted to increase my media volume (with headphones or other aux input) beyond a certain point there'd be a tiny pop-up to tell me that it's dangerous to listen to high volumes for a long time, cool, grand. Hit okay and then crank that baby UP!

NOW, the "media volume meter" is all the way maxed out, but is basically the volume that it was at the limit of the previous volume warning. That warning no longer seems to exist. I've searched all through the settings and there's literally nothing.

All other help guides I could find say to go to the sound and volume settings and then volume... but that's it... it just has the 4 volume sliders and that's it. The media one is maxed out. I am cursed to a terrible audio level that barely cancels out passengers on the train, let alone the train itself!

    Please help.

Can I go back if rooting process fails?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 09:00 AM PST

I'm thinking of rooting my phone (Huawei P9 lite 2016) but since this is will be my first time ever trying to attempt this I'm a bit scared and I want to know if I'm covered in case things don't turn out the way they should. So, say I mess up and I cause damage to my phone and I can't use it, can I go back at the starting point? From my experience with formatting and changing OSes at computers you can always reinstall your OS, is it the same thing? or similar?

Samsung A70 can't find Bose Soundtouch?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 02:44 AM PST

So I recently (yesterday) got an A70 after 8 years of owning an iPhone. For some reason my A70 can't find our Bose Soundtouch system. I have the Soundtouch app and my phone connects perfectly there: I can choose the radio station and change the volume but the moment I click "aux" it says it's connected but when I put on music on my phone it isn't played from the speakers but from my phone.

My phone's bluetooth can't find the device either despite that my iPhone had no trouble with this.

    Thanks in advance!

    LG Stylo 4 issues

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 08:37 AM PST

Hey everyone, first off i know this phone isnt a top of the line phone but its what i have for the time being

So, first off im use to LG flagship phones and after my last phone finally died i needed a phone asap so got this last year. Well the phone is terrible. Its slow, notification are delayed, apps freeze, apps wont stay opened in the background as in if i switch to read a text and go back to an app it will fully reload.

My question is what should i do? Only thing i can think of doing is rooting the phone but not even sure how that could help. Ive already went into developer mode and change a couple things but in the grand scheme of things it hasnt helped.

    Any info is greatly appreciated.

Not receiving notifications from certain appa on my Mi A3

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 11:35 PM PST

I don't know if this is an Android or a Xiaomi problem. As the title says, I don't receive any Instagram or Gmail notifications while I am not using these apps, I receive them when I open the app.

Using Xiaomi Mi A3 with stock android.

I do receive notifications from other apps like Messenger, Google, Youtube, Reddit, ect. I have double checked everything and no, I don't have the notifications for those apps disabled. Has anyone got any idea why this is happening and how to fix it?
