Android Dev - My Admob account was banned for invalid traffic after 10 years of development

My Admob account was banned for invalid traffic after 10 years of development

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 04:48 AM PST

So simple. I never violated their rules and did not even receive reasonable warnings. They banned my account for invalid traffic without explanation, because their algorithms are proprietary and classified. I filed an appeal, but it remains unanswered for more than a week. I covered it in my previous post "Let the evil corporation die" where also shared my thoughts about Google itself and the prospect of developing for Android in general.

Now for the more interesting part. My post was removed by moderators for violating rule 4. This rule states "Rule 4: No app takedown posts without desc of app". But my post was not about the app takedown, all my apps are fine, so I don't even know what specific app could be discussed. No one removes similar posts about the bans of the Admob account so this made me think that they don't like what kind of conversation we started yesterday about Google itself. At first I thought that the mod removed my post by mistake simply by following the complaint of one of the users who also quoted rule 4 to me without reading the post. But what's even more interesting is that after 3 messages written to the mods I did not receive a single response in a day. So they have nothing to answer. I think this is funny because it's very similar to what I described yesterday in the "Let the evil corporation die" post about communicating with Google, when you are removed for nothing and then they don't talk to you. Now I'm interested in somehow moderators of /androiddev connected with Google and how long this post will live.

Living in fear of the Ban Hammer is not living at all

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 08:47 PM PST

Stories of developers getting banned by mistake on Google Play and getting banned for obscure policy violations are on the rise lately. The other side is getting banned on Admob for "potential to generate invalid traffic". Whatever that means.

When you work for over 4 years to build a user base, gain trust and start earning an actual living off of Google Play and Admob, waking up to an email that your account has been suspended can take you to dark places.

The sad part is there aren't simple alternatives to GPS as they dominate the ecosystem and publishing anywhere else will net you less than 10% of what you get from GPS. This is painfuly true in African countries which would be 90% of my market.

There has been talk of unionizing and talk of Dev Events walk outs but these will never work. The people with voices are the ones who can also be heard by Google appeals if they get banned so they have no need to move with us. In Basic terms, we are f**ked.

Got a couple of emails from Google/AdMob about discussing AdMob opportunities for my Android & iOS app ... Has anyone gotten the same email or have any insight here?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 06:56 AM PST

    Hi all!

I've received a couple emails over the past two months from someone at Google (I have confirmed the email is coming from an @Google.com email address) and it seems legit, but I'm wondering if anyone has gotten a similar email or has any positive/negative opinions about this:

    TITLE: AdMob consultation with [name]

    BODY: Hi [my name],

My name is [name] from Google AdMob team and I work with developers to advise on high value AdMob opportunities. I'm reaching out because I noticed some opportunity for [my company name] to grow and would love to sync with you. Feel free to find a slot in my calendar through this form. If you prefer to receive monetization recommendations through email, please reply "Email".

Looking forward to speaking with you!

    Thanks, [name]

They also sent a follow up email almost exactly a month after.

    Any thoughts? Thanks for reading!

    EDIT FOR CLARIFICATION:

I have one app in the App Store and Play Store, and it DOES use AdMob for monetization for both Android and iOS.

The app has 50,000+ installs on each platform, but targets a niche market for online entertainment.

I was getting a VERY good eCPM rate in early November 2019 (like high $0.20s and low $0.30s for basically banner ads at the top or bottom of each page), but after the follow up email from Google, my rate tanked to the mid-$0.10s, and the iOS eCPM is super low compared to what it normally is.

    About Dev Accoun termination

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 04:31 AM PST

I know there's a lot of discussion about this and this has probably been asked over and over and over...

But I have two strikes on the Play Store and from what I know my account would be terminated with the 3d strike.

Since I'm a really clumsy person I got the strikes very easily (forgot to add privacy policy within the app as an example)

I really feel I'll get that 3d strike in a not so far future.

When/If that'll happen, from what I've read from other posts, I can forget about the Play Store right?

I can't create a brand new account and restartr publishing from there, I can't publish with the account of one of my relatives, right?

What do you do before using your app as reference?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 08:03 AM PST

I'm done with my first app that I want to use it as reference when applying for jobs. It was just a practice project, but I'm happy with how it turned out. However I'm not sure on how to "show it off".

Is it a good idea to just upload the project on github and put the link for the code in my resume? Is there some precautions that should be made before posting your code and making it publicly available?

Is it a good idea to put an app on the play store that you are not looking to make a profit out of, but just to make it easily accessible in case of having to show it off? In my head I have this scenario, where I apply to a job, and the first people who will see my application and who will look at my resume will probably not be a programmer. They can't evaluate my knowledge by looking at my code. However if they can just look at my app in the play store, they can see if they like it or not, and maybe my chances of getting to the next step would be better. However I heard from some people on this sub that they don't think putting the app on the play store would help me at all.

In-app feedback library (Google forms survey)

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 08:18 AM PST

    Hi,

I hope this post is "relevant" enough. I am looking for inspiration for a new side project, I have come up with one but would be interested in knowing whether it would appeal to others too. I have created a google forms. It only has 3 questions and will take perhaps 2-3 minutes to fill out. Please do so if you have stumbled upon this post!

    Thanks!

Would SQLite be the best storage option for this app example?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 02:07 AM PST

(BTW, I'm not a scientist and this is all hypothetical and made up)

Let's say I want to create a health app where, if you enter the food you consumed, it calculates and shows the calorie intake of the day, fat percentage, mood level, risk of early death, etc. etc. etc.

Example: I consume 2 apples. These attributes change to:

    • Calorie intake of the day: 1550
    • Fat percentage: 99.69%
    • Mood level: 55.0
    • Risk of early death: 0.4%

Now, if I consume an orange, these values change once again.

Would an SQLite database, in which a table is created for each "Person", work best? The rows might be these attributes. The columns might be the "Person"s.

In Java, if I run a function like timmy.consume(Food.orange, 2);, I would do the calculations and make changes to Timmy's SQLite table cells.

Is this the best form of Android storage I should use? I'm new to Android dev. Thanks! :)

Functional programming and Android. Can it be done?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 07:55 AM PST

Just for some context I am currently employed as a web developer mostly writing Java and Javascript. I have always been interested in Android and want to start learning Kotlin.

At work some of the tech leads are pushing to introduce functional programming. Our CTO really likes Elixir, but more so he really just wants us to start writing our services in a functional paradigm to cut down on complexity and maintenance. I think we'll be doing a sort of hackathon in the near future where the idea would be to use a functional language.

So I'm at this crossroads where I could go full steam ahead either on Android/Kotlin or functional programming, but I'm wondering if I can kill two birds with one stone here. Can an Android app be written in a fully functional manner using Kotlin? I guess I'm looking for thoughts and advice here. Thanks for anything.

why does the emulator work better on mac?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 07:46 AM PST

Hello, does anyone know why Android Studio's emulators run so much smoother on mac OS? i'm just talking about the responsiveness of the emulator, how smooth the screen transitions are, etc. it always seems to perform much better on my mac than my PC, despite the fact that they have similar hardware specs.

    thanks

What do you use to build a landing page for your App?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 06:52 AM PST

    Hi,

I'm trying to find out what's the best landing page builder for mobile apps. If you have a landing page for your app, it would be nice if you could answer a few quick questions.

    1. What is your website URL?
    2. What is your website builder?
    3. How much are you paying for that every year (including hosting)?
    4. Why did you choose this page builder and what do you like about it?
    5. What don't you like about it?

    Thanks.

    Registering Second Developer Account

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 07:43 PM PST

I have two questions regarding the registration.

I am an existing android developer on play console and I would like to open new account for my company so my questions are.

    1. If I open new developer account with different email (of course) will my existing account or the new account will get in trouble because of the "associate account policy" I have seen the cases of the people who make multiple accounts and get terminated because of this.

    2. If the new account remains as normal then will it affect because of the two suspended apps in my existing account? Will the new account have three remaining strikes or just one because of the existing account having two suspended apps?

Do you mentally drained after work and Lack of motivation to go workout

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 12:44 PM PST

As Developers sometimes fitness feels not very congruent with our lifestyle, work. I have recently decided to help developers with their fitness and start my consulting company and I'd like to learn more about their problems. One of the issues that people report me again and again is the lack of motivation. They tell me that this is due to being sedentary and working long hours (sometimes coupled with commute.) Looking at the screen for hours definitely effects mental energy and it is often common for me to find myself feeling drained, without energy to workout or to cook healthy etc.

What do you guys think about this issue, are you facing the same challenge when it comes to fitness that is lack of motivation ? Knowing that you should do something about it but lacking motivation. Do you feel that you are wiped out after having worked for hours? Or do you have some other issues you are dealing with, please go ahead and share, I'd like your feedback.

PS: I said developers because I'm a developer myself and I can relate to them better as I have the same lifestyle but any other profession is welcome to contribute. Thank you for reading/replying!

Play Store Pre-launch report: Is there a way to test on a tablet device?

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 10:47 PM PST

Our released app crashed yesterday on start in all tablet devices because of missing overflow menu xml entry for tabled configuration. The issue could have been easily spotted by automated tests performed by Play Store. But I see that test is always performed on 11 smartphones only.

Is there some way to make pre-launch report to test additionally on a tablet device?

(In case you don't use the feature yet, I recommend you start. You only need to provide login credentials to your app and information where automated script should type them in: https://medium.com/googleplaydev/google-play-expands-its-pre-launch-testing-capabilities-9b51a23077cf )

Machine Learning is an application of AI (Artificial Intelligence ) that enables the software to automatically learn, explore, and imagine outcomes without human intervention. Machine learning has been used in various fields, and currently, it is inevitable to mobile application development.

According to some statistics, in the year of 2017, Netflix saved $1 billion by using machine learning to make personalized recommendations. Imagine how this result increases every year along with the high success rate of computer technology development.

Businesses are always in search of new technological waves to follow and lead the market, outperforming their competitors. One of the modern tech waves that gain significant attention is AI.

Is anyone here using Jetpack's Navigation component in production?

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 11:35 AM PST

I've started integrating it in a pet project of mine and it's a been a bit of the pain.

The default FragmentNavigator uses replace, so I built my own to use show/hide and to avoid the FragmentManager's backstack, since I want my Fragment's View to be alive when going back.

I'm using remove when popping the backstack and I found this bug: https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/146359827

With replace, each time the user switches tabs, the whole view is recreated and state is lost forever unless you persist it to disk.

How are you guys handling bottom navigation? Are you using replace each the time the user switches tabs, or are you also using show/hide to keep the view state?

I really like how Navigation can be defined via XML, the safe args plugin and the Library's API, but this "issue" makes me wonder how everyone is using it in production.
