PSA: Turn off RCS before switching phones

    Posted: 19 Dec 2019 06:33 AM PST

Just a heads up that if you switch phones, it's a good idea to turn off RCS on the old phone first. If RCS isn't yet enabled on your new phone (or it's an iPhone), messages from contacts in existing RCS chats may potentially continue to go to your old phone.

I got caught with this yesterday actually - switched my SIM from my Pixel to my iPhone. Missed a bunch of messages from my wife during the day because they were still going to my Pixel.

Note that my Pixel was still on and connected to Wifi - if it wasn't, the 'Resend undelivered as SMS' option that is enabled by default might have worked, but Google support also suggests turning off RCS as it may stay active for up to 8 days.

Fortunately it's not as bad as iMessage was a couple years ago where you had to tell people to delete their existing group chats and put your phone number into Apple's site to deregister it. Just hoping this saves some people from missing some messages.

Best apps for Reddit on Android?

    Posted: 19 Dec 2019 02:11 PM PST

The old archived thread on this topic is outdated.

I have tried the top recommended apps: Reddit, Boost, Joey, Sync, RIF, and Relay.

I used Joey and Sync the most in the past.

Reddit, Boost, RIF, and Relay are my least favorite for various reasons. I know some folks like the web 1.0 aspects of some of these, but although I like simplicity and function over form, I am not into the web 1.0 thing. Nor am I into the suffer for fashion thing.

    Currently I am using Infinity.

Despite the terrible name for a reddit app, Infinity is the most seamless I have used on Android. Just popping in and out to reply, vote, share, or post is completely seamless within the Android OS functionality. They did a great job there. It has enough bells and whistles to compete for users who like a some of the nice and shinies on their apps, but not as much as fully web 2.0 apps like Boost or Joey.

Is Infinity a power-user style app? I don't know. I don't think so. I'm not a power user, so I wouldn't run into the walls a power user might run into. But for average users who pop in and out of the app, and want to be able to quick reply to threads and read replies, and average use things like that...it is the best of its class.

What is everyone feeling about these apps these days?

Google app FCs when you search for 'What is iMessage'

    Posted: 19 Dec 2019 07:04 AM PST

Don't know whether it's a bug or an easter egg, but when you open the Google app (not Assistant) and search for 'What is iMessage', it stops unexpectedly. Tried with multiple devices and android versions.
    Try it yourself!

Edit: Someone also reported this in the Google sub reedit yesterday (here). Just went through it and did some testing.

From my little 30-min testing, this is what I made out. This (the app crash) happens due to some internal function conflict between Google app's "web search" and "assistant". When you ask the same question to Google Assistant, whether by voice or by typing, it should ask for Notification Access. Somehow, and for some reason, the hot words "what" and "message", when used in some commands trigger the assistant to read out the latest messages. When we try searching the same thing on the Google app, assistant picks it up, and hence both the functions conflict and the app crashes.

Search queries like "What is message" also result in an app crash.

How worthwhile is a 4GB RAM mobile in 2020?

    Posted: 19 Dec 2019 01:40 PM PST

I'm purchasing a phone around Christmas. How worthwhile is it getting a 4GB RAM phone? Will it last for the next 3-4 years?

My primary use is for gaming, like PUBG, and doing other university related works (PDF,Drive,Docs and so on)

Will 4 GB suffice, or I should opt for 6 GB of ram or even 8GB? The processor of the phone is Snapdragon 730G.

    Thank you!

    Samsung Extended Update Support

    Posted: 19 Dec 2019 07:48 AM PST

With the incoming launch of samsung s10 lite and note 10 lite equiped with exynos 9810, the one which s9 and note 9 also have, should we expect that devices with that SOC will also be supported longer for the upcoming 2 versions of android? If the support for these devices will not be officialy extended should we expect that the modding community will have a much easier job porting the updates from s10 lite and note 10 lite ?
