Android 12 added status bar privacy indicators for the camera and microphone. When an app uses location, an icon is shown in the status bar, but it isn't green/expandable like the other two. However, Google is testing a proper privacy indicator for location use in Android 13. - Mishaal Rahman

Nearby Share's "self-share" mode will let you quickly share files to other devices signed into the same Google account without needing to approve the share. This hasn't rolled out yet from what I can see, but it's present in the latest version of Google Play Services. - Mishaal Rahman

According to @kacskrz 's work, Xiaomi's new Poco C40 will use quite an unusual SoC. Instead of a Mediatek, Qualcomm or an Unisoc it's using "JR510" from a basically unknown company called JLQ. I decided to take a look at the company and the chip. Thread 🧵👇 - Kuba Wojciechowski

Deep diving into Samsung's A and S series update policies

    Posted: 18 Apr 2022 12:18 AM PDT

As those who follow Android news know, Samsung has expanded their smartphone updates in the last 2 years greatly, first to 3 OS updates and 4 years of security updates, and now 4 OS updates and 5 years of security updates. A good thing is that this policy somewhat applies to their low and mid range A series as well. But the policy does not apply uniformly to all products, and there are a few intricacies on how frequently updates are provided. This post serves as a guide by collecting information from various official sources, as well as extrapolating based on past observations (e.g. by using Internet Archive to look at how the policy page changes).

Starting with the simpler S series. Samsung has promised 3 OS updates and 4 years of security updates for S10 and S20, and 4/5 for S21 and S22. The Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10+, Galaxy S10e as of today is past the 3 year mark, and receiving quarterly updates. We can extrapolate all 3/4 devices will receive 3 years of monthly updates and 1 year of quarterly updates (shortened as 3M1Q). For 4/5 devices, we do not have any precedence currently.

Moving onto the A series, products higher than A10 were promised 4 years of security updates, leaving out A01 at the time of announcement (but includes A02s). As for 3 OS updates, Samsung's announcement pointed to Galaxy A71 5G, A71, A51 5G, A51, A90 5G (in short, the A5x and A7x series after the Ax1 generation, with A90 5G being 1 off). Most devices receives quarterly security updates right off the announcement, including the newly announced A33 5G and A73 5G. However, products designated by Samsung as enterprise models receives monthly updates at announcement, including previously A50, and currently A52, A52 5G, A52s 5G, and A53 5G. A50 has moved to quarterly updates after the 3 year mark (3M1Q). Most other A series devices move from quarterly updates to biannual updates after the 2 year mark (2Q2B).

What does r/Android use their phone for?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2022 10:11 PM PDT

Most phones are adequately powerful to handle most tasks. YT, Netflix, messaging, payment, travel or some games perhaps; social apps or apps related to specific workflow are generally what I think a normal user would have.

I wonder what the "pro" users do, how they fit a 6" slab in their use case that eke out the very limitations of the phone. Surely there is a ceiling beyond which working on a phone becomes cumbersome. I'd think phones upward of €500-600 are enough to meet the "casual requirements"; unless the phone bugs out even doing daily tasks like making calls.

Improvements in slab phones are all towards the camera. OEMs in the premium sphere want the sweet nectar of the pinnacle of phone photography. Do professionals use phone footage for their cinematography?

I just don't understand what a "pro" use case for a phone is. The screen limits most tasks. It's a "mobile" device after all. It'd be great if pro-users chimes in to discuss their use cases
