Are Sony android fans screwed with VoLTE being mandatory for service?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2022 01:35 PM PST

At least in the US and a couple other countries.

We are seeing a changeover in service with old standards being removed so 4GLTE and 5G will be the only standards left in the countries doing this.

I noticed here on reddit people complaining about Xperia XA/X2 not being compatible and this got me thinking.

The Xperia 1 family, which includes the Xperia 5 and Xperia 10, seem to be the only phones listed on compatibility lists that are GUARANTEE to work because they have the required VoLTE.

So that means old 4K Sony phones like Xperia Z5 premium and XA premium won't work according to tech sites.

So are the Xperia 1/10/5 family of phones the only phones with compatible VoLTE or 5G? Are there any others?

From the looks of things Sony fans are screwed, most Sony fans (82% according to techspot) don't have the Xperia 1 family of phones, which makes sense since they are the most expensive Sony phones yet, and some recent phones before them have better specs and features, primarily when compared to the newer X10 and X5 series which are the mid and low range brands..

So I guess most Sony phone users will have their phones abruptly stop working? I know it's not Sony's fault or say but that's pretty annoying, especially since Sony phones cost a premium and aren't that easy to access outside of online or best buy.

How I see it is most likely due to lack of interest and/or affordability of the X1/10/5 family Sony phones, fans will just change brands if their phones cut off, which won't help Sony's phone division at all. Im sure they will still make phones in a niche compacity if that happens, their phones used to bleed rivers for years in cash after all, but Sony was literally just about to push their handsets in a broader marketing campaign.

Sucks, LG is dead and the best Sony phones will stop working (other than the flagship xperia 1 mark family, but they cost you first daughter to buy)
