    Weekly Questions Thread - January 04, 2022

    Posted: 04 Jan 2022 06:00 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we suggest checking the sidebar, the wiki, our Discord, or Stack Overflow before posting). Examples of questions:

    • How do I pass data between my Activities?
    • Does anyone have a link to the source for the AOSP messaging app?
    • Is it possible to programmatically change the color of the status bar without targeting API 21?

Large code snippets don't read well on reddit and take up a lot of space, so please don't paste them in your comments. Consider linking Gists instead.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/androiddev mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Also, please don't link to Play Store pages or ask for feedback on this thread. Save those for the App Feedback threads we host on Saturdays.

How to use Android Studio on very low-end laptops?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2022 04:40 AM PST

Hi, I'm a developer, and I was planning to start learning Android Development today, but when I looked at the system requirements, I was disappointed because my laptop does not meet the minimum system requirements that Android Studio requires. I also attempted to install and use Android Studio, but it was so sluggish that it was completely unusable. Do you have any ideas/suggestions for developing Android apps on a low-end laptop? I would be grateful for any help you could provide.

    Laptop specifications:

    Model: Toshiba Portege M700

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo T8100

    RAM: 2GB DDR2

    Storage: 80GB HDD

    Operating System: Arch Linux

    Thank you for your time.

Anyone running google ads to get android installs?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2022 06:30 AM PST

I'm bringing in a few hundred installs per week from google ads (all based in the US), but I'm skeptical about the quality of the new users. I'm interested in hearing about your experience in growing your user base via google ads.

How to make a layout similar Google Keep/Twitter images layout?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2022 08:24 AM PST

Hello everyone. This is not a technical question, so that's why I post it here and not in SO. I want to know how to make a similar layout like Google Keep or Twitter have for images. To be more specific, when you add one image to a note or tweet, the image is displayed full size (or it looks like it), but then, when you add more images, these are shown with a reduced size and it looks more like a RecyclerView layout (staggered grid for Keep and linear layout for Twitter). I don't know how they do it. Do they use a ImageView for one image, and then switch to a RecyclerView when displaying several images? Or is just one RecyclerView with different view types?

    Releasing app to Google play

    Posted: 04 Jan 2022 07:57 AM PST

Hey guys, I'm a new Android developer and I want to release an app to Google play. I'm currently using Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics to just log some simple events. I see however that there is a Data safety section for apps which requires some privacy policy/legal stuff? I'm not sure how this should be approached. Is there anything I should know?

Google does not allows using Google Pay for physical goods and services

    Posted: 04 Jan 2022 03:07 AM PST

I have read this page saying that apps downloaded from Play Store should not use Google Pay for physical goods or services.

    | Google Play's billing system must not be used in cases where:
    | for the purchase or rental of physical goods
    | for the purchase of physical services

But the on their home page they show selling pythical goods and on the bottom of the page they show companies which offer pysical services.

why do they advertise Google Pay with selling things that they say that they do not allow it?

anyways, I have an app which will sell audio content. Will I be forced to use Google Pay?

How do I get an .apk file to install on my workspace?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2022 08:58 AM PST

Trying to test a dev build for work, but I can't find a way to either :

    • Find my existing workspace environment in Windows Explorer, to directly put the .apk file there.

    • Or install the .apk file, sitting outside my workspace, so that it installs onto the workspace.

I'm using an old Samsung Galaxy S7.

    I feel like I'm regressing

    Posted: 04 Jan 2022 07:50 AM PST

    Hello,

I've been working for my company for 2.5 years, this is my first contract after graduating. We are two people in the mobile team, an iOS developer and me as an Android developer. As I'm the only Android developer nobody reads my code, and I feel like I've been doing "dirty" code for a while.

I don't know how to improve efficiently and without taking too much time on the tasks I have to develop. I'm trying to learn Redux and migrate some features but it seems too complicated. Sometimes I feel like I'm making bad architectural choices but I don't know any other way.

What would you do in my place? Should I look for a new job which has a team of experienced developers?

To solo developers here with apps not requiring internet, how are you earning?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2022 03:47 AM PST

I read somewhere that some apps are forcing their users to connect to internet before a function can be used even without a backend. Maybe to show an ad first before it can be used. Is this allowed?

Please, guys, I have a question. Is it relevant to use the same procedure on newer Android devices (Oreo, API +26 to check Internet availability with confidence or there is a built-in alternative in the Android Framework?

Play Console Developer app (android) for iOS?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2022 02:26 AM PST

    Hi!
I'd like to know if there is a Play console developer (google) app for iOS that I can't find, or a third party.

I know I can access the browser view but it's not as neat as the app to quickly see latest reviews, purchases and notifications.

How to build an administrator app?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2022 04:23 PM PST

    Hi everyone,

This is my first post ever, sorry if something is wrong with the post structure. I've been looking and reading about how to be able to build an app that can be able to monitor the whole device, that can't be uninstalled and that can have services that run forever (without being affected by the OS battery optimization)

After a while, I found out about the Android Management API, and it says that can control some permissions related to passwords, device encryption, and camera. But... I don't quite understand if this API can do what I'm trying to accomplish with the FULL MANAGEMENT it talks about when combined with Android Enterprise.

    Any thoughts about this?
