Samsung's Object eraser vs Google's Magic eraser

    Posted: 26 Oct 2021 10:32 AM PDT

I remember watching the S21 announcement or maybe the One UI 3 update announcement and seeing when Samsung announced their object eraser tool and not thinking much of it and moving on. Samsung didn't really hype it up and it didn't get much fanfare here or tech blog coverage besides a couple articles like this.

After getting an S21 Ultra, I stumbled across the feature again and tried it out and I was genuinely surprised at how well it worked and have used it a few times since with generally great results.

When Google announced Magic eraser and it became one of the major marketing points for the Pixel 6 I was curious how it compared to Samsung's version. I found this video today doing a pretty good comparison.

Max Weinbach also posted this Magic eraser example on Twitter. Ice Universe took the same picture and used Samsung's Object eraser on it and got this result: https://mobile.twitter.com/UniverseIce/status/1452839274164928516/photo/4

I think Object eraser and Magic eraser trade blows and both perform decently well. If Google is using Tensor ML algorithms to improve the feature I can definitely see them pulling ahead rather quickly unless Samsung is doing something similar under the hood.

So, did Samsung miss out on capitalizing on this feature they had all year but didn't really market or is this just a gimmicky feature that Google is overhyping and people will use a couple times to show off and then never touch again?

I think Google floating it as a suggested edit will help bring attention to it for it to be used more often. It seems like many people don't even know the feature exists on Samsung phones with similar functionality and Samsung isn't doing anything to change that.

Mishaal Rahman on Twitter: Google Camera 8.4.167 is now available through Google Play for the Pixel 6 (it was already available for reviewers). The app is now over 300MB in size, as I alluded to earlier.

So Instagram (and other socials) lets the Google Pixel 6 Pro switch between cameras in app.

Wish this was available to all android phones :(

I've been dreaming of this feature for years.
