People always talk about what they miss about older android phones. But what are some features older generation Android phones had that you are happy are not industry practice anymore?

inb4 3.5mm jack or expandable storage

For me, it'd probably have to be resistive screens. Words cannot describe how painful it was to use anything that had a resistive touchscreen, even good hardware inside was for naught when you had a resistive touchscreen with the need to use a hard stylus for.

    Thank good for real touchscreens.

Is it just me or do new Android 12 location permissions seem useless? Needs more time to integrate?

    Posted: 21 Oct 2021 01:42 AM PDT

So I've updated my pixel phone to Android 12 and if you try to give apps only the approximate location they will often still prompt you to give them location permissions.

Also Bluetooth still seems to require location services, which I guess needs to be changed in the app code itself. Will the developers adapt their apps? Do they care?

It's nice that android adds these new privacy features for the location services but it really seems pointless if the apps still require you to share your precise location and still require location for connecting Bluetooth devices.

What does Tensor & proprietary special processors mean for Android eco-system?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2021 09:16 AM PDT

In the past, Google & community would code Android to take advantage of Snapdragon features. This would benefit pretty much all manufacturers. Now that Google has its own processor & specialized processors, they'll give them priority. Right?

Will features coded to take advantage of Google's chips fallback to software implementation even if Snapdragon can accomplish similar in hardware? Is Tensor, et al the seeds of a walled garden?

Maybe my understanding is wrong & Qualcomm has always coded Android to take advantage of their chips.

Starting up Google Assistant Driving Mode is an un-fun experience.

    Posted: 20 Oct 2021 09:13 AM PDT

I've used Android Auto for phone screens for a few years now. While glitchy at times it did what I wanted it to do, and I only had to press a button to launch it.

With the new Assistant Driving mode, getting it running is a bit of a hassle. I currently have it set to launch when it detects that I'm driving or when I connect to my car's Bluetooth. Neither works.

According to this Google page you can create a shortcut on your home screen:

To add driving mode to your home screen, tap App launcher [in Assistant Driving Mode] and then Add driving mode to Home screen and then Add automatically.

However, this may be an outdated page as that option does not exist in the menu.

I managed to create an Assistant routine and added a widget shortcut to my home screen, but that feels like a round-about way to do something that should already be available.

I apologize if this seems ranty, as I do like the menu of the new Assistant Driving Mode and it feels a lot smoother than Android Auto. I just feel that getting it running is needlessly complex.

Anyone ever take off their phone case to use their phone naked?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2021 12:41 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

So normally once every day now I've been taking off my case when I get home to use my phone. It feels so good in the hands especially when you have curved glass..

Some people are careless and never remove their case

Let's just say I live life dangerously and it's so nice to feel my sleek phone metal/aluminum and hold the curved glass in my hands like a phone hand model.

It's just the way it's meant to be!

Thoughts? I hate when I need to pop it back in the case but I mean it is 10/10 condition!
