Why buying the newest phone at a discount is better than buying an older phone.

    Posted: 09 May 2021 08:21 PM PDT

Unpopular opinion, but I believe that buying a phone released just a few months ago is better than buying a phone released 1/2 years ago. Here are my reasons.

Reason 1: OS and Security Updates

This one is pretty self-explanatory. Unlike iPhone, we have a pre-determined update cycle. For example, Samsung phones will get 3 years OS and 4 years security. If you buy last years' flagship, you lose 1 year of updates, the year before, 2 years, and so on.

    Reason 2: Price/Value

If you don't buy a new phone as it is released and instead wait a few months, you're going to save quite a lot of money. For example, I recently bought an S21 for CAD800$ instead of CAD1200$ (yes, prices of phones are inflated here in Canada.) If I would have gone for last year's model, I would have saved 100$ new and 200$ refurbished.

Now let's suppose a flagship lasts you 4/5 years, this years' phone is 1000$, and the two year old one is 600$.

If you buy new after a few months, you get a sale and you get the phone for 800$, it lasts you 5 years. It would cost 160$/year.

If you buy a 2 year old phone for 600$, and it lasts you 3 years, that would be 200$/year.

Now you luckily find the 2 year old phone for 500$, however it's still 166$/year.

Now yes, you could argue that you would use a two-year old flagship for more than three years, and you're right, then that does make it cheaper. However, buying old also means getting a worse battery (which you could replace...for 50$), older specs (60/90Hz instead of 120Hz, worse chip, etc.) and so on. This may get you to upgrade a 5 year old device even if it can last you more.

For example, 60Hz was a normality back then, however, now, 120Hz will be the normality for years, meaning that if you buy OP7 or S10, you'll be lacking as opposed to if you buy OP9 or S21.

TL;DR - Buying the most recent device at a discount is a better choice than buying an older one (for 25% cheaper) because of it getting 1/2 more years of updates, the device having normal specs for said year instead of specs that were normal two years ago, etc. In general, more value/cost.

The best alternative to Google Photo's unlimited upload seems to be GoPro Plus

    Posted: 09 May 2021 10:23 AM PDT

With Google Photo's unlimited backup ending this month, some of you are looking at alternatives. There's no 100% replacement but I've found that GoPro Plus has a big advantage over Google Photos, but several disadvantages too.

If you have bought a Hero8 Black, MAX or Hero9 Black from gopro.com, you have also bought 1 year of GoPro Plus. GoPro sells the camera and the 1 year subscription to the service for 100$ less than what other sites are charging.

The GoPro Plus service allows for unlimited video/photo upload at original quality, camera replacement should you break your GoPro and discounts on accessories. It's bundled in your GoPro camera purchase. This usually costs 5$/month, but later this year you can also opt into the cloud upload service only by paying 2$ (yes, 2$) a month if you haven't bought a GoPro.

For GoPro users using GoPro Plus cloud is a no-brainer, as far as I know no other service offers unlimited original quality storage for photos and videos. I've uploaded about 100GB worth of 5K 30 footage from my Hero9, as well as several hundred GBs worth of 4K 60 footage and 360 footage from my GoPro MAX and Hero8/7 cameras. I capture about 300GB worth of videos and photos each time I travel, and all of that is stored in GoPro Plus without quality degradation (GoPro Plus started out downscaling all videos to 1440p). What's cool about this service is the website allows you to upload all kinds of video, so I've uploaded my drone footage as well.

For non-GoPro folks you can opt into GoPro Plus for 5$/mo now or wait till GoPro releases the Quik sub that'll cost 2$/mo or just 10$/year.

Media uploaded is stored at the original resolution

You get the same file you uploaded

Here is more info on GoPro Plus for GoPro camera users and how it works

    Quik subscription details

The downsides are no auto upload from your phone or from PC, the web is very barebones, so no AI stuff, no editing tools, no filtering... You can set your GoPro camera to auto upload when it's charging but that's it.

I'll continue to get a GoPro camera every year so I'll always have the subscription... but the lingering question is for how long will GoPro keep this very generous offer.
