App Advertising Tracking Transparency: iOS vs Android

    Posted: 21 May 2021 03:30 PM PDT

With iOS 14.5, Apple has made a big deal about how they are allowing users to opt out of advertising trackers for specific applications. Many websites have posted that there doesn't appear to be an Android equivalent. Here are a couple.

Additionally, reports are showing that many advertisers are "fleeing" to Android because of this "shift".

What I am confused about, as a Galaxy S20+ and Tab S7+ user, is what they're talking about. Doing a quick search in Settings, I found the following under the "Privacy" tab on both devices (both running Android 11, One UI 3.1)

In Privacy, there's an "Ads" tab where you can "Reset your advertising ID" to a new one, "Opt out of Ad Personalization" which applies this setting to ALL apps, and a debug log option that allows you to see what network traffic is related to the ads.

So, doesn't that mean Android already has this coveted feature Apple has been touting and publications have been saying doesn't exist for Android devices? Is this feature more limited compared to its iOS counterpart? Is it only limited to Samsung devices? Or, are publications merely talking about how users are confronted with the choice instead of having to look for it?

I just felt this was something worth discussing. For users unaware that this feature exists, I hope you can now rest a little easier about your privacy.
