Samsung's blue light filter "Eye Comfort Shield" is HORRIBLE on non-AMOLED devices.

    Posted: 19 Apr 2021 12:08 PM PDT

(Weirdly, this post was not approved on /r/samsung, so posting here)

So I just received a Galaxy Tab S6 Lite and was very disappointed to find out how horrible Samsung's own blue light filter works on it. I use it on my AMOLED phone (s10e) and it works like a charm, but on the tablet it destroys the entire image quality.

This is a huge problem, as it is something that cannot be solved by other apps, since the functionality to do this properly and system wide requires root access.

The Eye Comfort Shield changes blacks to a muddy brownish color, which heavily decreases the contrast of the screen and makes it less readable.

Here are two pictures to show what I'm talking about.

No blue light filter, iPad Air 1 reference

Aside from Samsung's blue light filter not nearly being as strong as Apple's, it also completly fails to adjust the colors properly. The colors that are supposed to be black are now a washed out brown which makes image and text extremely ugly and less readable.

I really don't understand how Samsung dropped the ball so hard here. Maybe they only tested their Eye Comfort Shield on AMOLED devices? This can't possibly be what they had in mind.

There are countless Android apps that have built in blue light filters for their own content (Opera Browser, various PDF readers) and they work properly, leaving the blacks black. However it's still only a bandaid for the problem if the system wide blue light filter doesn't work correctly.

If there is no way to resolve this it will probably be reason enough for me to return this tablet, even though I like everything else about it.

Hope somebody can help me out here or knows what's going on.

Personal Review: Redmit Note 10 Pro - Xiaomis Pocket Knife for small money

    Posted: 19 Apr 2021 11:00 AM PDT

    Hi Community,

coming from a Redmi 4 Pro (yes it worked for 4,5 years). I bought the Note 10 Pro some days ago and wanted to share my experience:

    What I like

    • Fast for all daily needs and stable software, didnt have any problems
    • 120 Hz display is no must have but really nice to have. Bascially it improves the browsing experience giving you a more fluid feeling when scrolling up and down, so its not only for gamers The super bright AMOLED looks great in sun light and overall.
    • Battery time is really good, as a heavy user I couldnt kill it in one day. Something regularly happend to me with my old smartphones.
    • Has a lot of features you might miss on other phones: Micro SD Slot, NFC, dedicated dual sim slot, 3,5mm headphone jack, fast charging in about 1 hour, good working fingerprint sensor on the power button
    • Comes with a free transparent cover, screen protector and 33 Watt charger
    • device quality is good, buttons can be pressed nicely
    • cameras are good for the price, gcam is working and enables stabilized 4k video (electronic stab.)
    • The price is very attrative

    What I don´t like

    • The camera bulk is an idiotic design flaw. Your smartphone will dance on the table start after you start typing. They should have put the bulk in the center. You bascially need the cover on the smartphone to fix this. But even with cover the phone still dances if pressed too hard. What the hell have you done here Xiaomi?
    • The cameras are good fore the price, but not excellent. There is only RAW mode with 12 Megapixel photos, 108 Megapixel mode give you a ~11 Megabyte jpeg and is only avaible in the official camera app. Every other app will give you a 12 Megapixel photo, also gcam will give you only 12 Megapixel photos. Of course there is no OIS like to expect in this price range. Dont get fooled by the 108 Megapixel, thats not the main reason you should buy the phone for.
    • The one hand mode sucks. You get a 4.5 inch display with 21:9 aspect ratio, which is just super tiny and doesnt help. I recommed an app like Quick Cursor instead to use the smartphone with one hand.
    • The model names can sparkle confusion. There is Note 10 Pro Max without NFC, there is an old Xioami Note 10 Pro from 2019, there are several other phones with very smiliar names from Xiaomi. I wish they gave the phone a more unique name to make searching for reviews and accesoires easier.

    Overall

The unique selling point of this smartphone is that it has many features for a midrange price. I would call it the pocket knife of xiaomi smartphones because its so versatile. But of course it lacks some flagship feautures: no OIS, no first class camera or ultra good tele lens, only midrange standard CPU and GPU power and of course no wireless charging or full waterproofness. The Redmi Note 10 Pro is a big display phone for a cheap price with a lot of functions. Cameras could be even better and you get more processing speed with similiar priced smartphones, but they certainly will lack in a lot of other things the Note 10 Pro has to offer. The Redmi Note 10 Pro is reasonable allround smartphone for daily use regarding producitivy and entertainment, with a great 120 hz AMOLED and the possibility to use huge micro sd cards. The price is very good and the feature list is long, making it a purchase which is hard to regret. If you dont need many of these features, like the AMOLED display or the micro sd slot, there are other good options. But as a package the Redemi Note 10 Pro is hard to beat.

    Alternative Devices

    • Poco X3 NFC if you want to save money and dont mind the worse display
    • Poco X3 Pro if you want more gaming power and a dont mind the worse display
    • Poco F3 if you want more gaming power, its ok for you to spend a bit more and can live with a bit worse camera, battery and the lack of a micro sd card slot (Also thought long time about getting the F3, but iam not a mobile gamer)
    • Google Pixel 4a if its okey for you to spend more money, want a better camera with OIS, want longer software updates, dont miss the lacking micro SD card slot and are okey with a smaller 5.7 display

Disclaimer: Nobody paid me for this review and I had to pay the full price for the smartphone. I just wrote this to share my experience :)

The RedMagic 6 Series was announced for the US, but who is this really for?

    Posted: 18 Apr 2021 09:22 PM PDT

I saw on AndroidPolice (as a sponsored post, which says a lot about who they allow to be their sponsors) that the RedMagic 6 Series was announced as something of a "flagship killer". Intrigued, I took a look at RedMagic's website. Now I'll admit, up until now I had never heard of RedMagic, so my first thought when I saw this was "Oh great, another neat looking Android phone that won't be available in the US." Until I saw their website listing it for the US market. Okay, cool. The specs on that series are definitely nothing to sneeze at. What's the catch? What networks do they support?

    Y'all.

    https://na.redmagic.gg/pages/redmagic-6-pro-specs

    Network

    SIM: dual nano-SIM
SA+NSA: compatible with both standalone and non-standalone modes

    5G: NR n41/n78

    2G+3G+4G:

    GSM 2/3/5/8

    WCDMA B1/2/4/5/6/8/9/19

    CDMA/EVDO BC0/BC1

    TD-LTE B34/B38/39/40/41

    FDD-LTE B1/B2/B3/B4/B5/B7/B8/B12/B17/B18/B19

    /B20/B26/B28/B66

So, no full support for T-Mobile (no B71/n71, no B25 or B26), no full support for Verizon (no B13 or n5), and no full support for AT&T (No B14, B30, or n5). So if this phone series really is being sold in the US, who the heck is it for? Was 4G/5G certification for those bands really that hard to acquire? I mean, c'mon. This phone series has a snowball's chance in a volcano of achieving certification of working on those networks. And if they can't do that, then these phones are basically DOA.

What the heck, RedMagic? What's the point? Who's gonna buy these? I noticed that AndroidPolice disabled comments on their post too, so I couldn't bring this up with them. Perhaps they're aware and didn't want the backlash? Sponsor money keeping them quiet?
