Is FFMPEG still a good library for video processing now a day?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 01:54 AM PDT

I just went through a post of an Android dev, he said he has a lot of experience with FFMPEG. Makes me wonder if it's still a good library to go for, or Android's built in Media Codec is better option if you want to try with video editing, resizing... I've working on several usecases and Media Codec seems working faster than FFMPEG.

What's up with seemingly every 'beginner' course/tutorial skipping over so much stuff?

    Posted: 16 Apr 2021 11:19 AM PDT

I've been dabbling around with Android development on and off but recently I decided to buckle down with it and really learn everything from the ground up (best practices, etc.). I was using the Google developers Udacity course but had to stop part way through because each tutorial was just becoming "Copy paste these 50 lines of code into your project, don't worry about what they do. And we're done!", lol. I just don't find that useful because when it comes to actually modifying that code and/or building my own app, I have no idea what I'm doing.

I just bought a course on Udemy and while the first few lessons were good, I see it turning into the same thing. They're explaining View Binding, but for example they don't explain anything about the layout inflator inside the activity, just "copy paste this code".

Should I just assume this is stuff I don't need to know? If I'm serious about android development, is this approach okay or do I need to do more research on my own? I'd appreciate anyone's thoughts on this! Maybe I'm just overthinking it, but it's almost like I'm getting FOMO on all the stuff they keep skipping haha.

I want to learn how to use Gooogle Cloud SQL for Android. I've been checking the GCP docs and still couldn't distill the proper route.

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 06:01 AM PDT

There's just so much content in the up there in the GCP docs -- app engine, cloud platform, etc., and for each of those services, is another branching out of stuff like using node.js with Google Cloud SQL, etc.

So my end goal is this. To create an app, with an SQL database that serves as a users diary of the symptoms he's been feeling day by day. I want this data to be available both on their Room Database (which I already know how to use) and then have this data also available for storage in a Google Cloud SQL for MySQL instance.

Browsing the docs is just too overwhelming because of how many I should sift through just to get to the simple thing that I want to accomplish.

Where should I start? What should I study first?

    Thank you!

    Encryption unsuccessful in Android

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 05:48 AM PDT

I wake up today and saw my phone screen showing multiple horizontal lines scrolling up to down (something like that picture but horizontal not vertical lines : https://i.ibb.co/fv31J1J/gg.png). Immediately thought that my screen was broken and removed battery, restarted phone to verify. And then I was shocked with that message "encryption unsuccessful" (https://www.androiddata-recovery.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/hqdefault.jpg). To my knowledge, I know that phone encryption had triggered and was somehow aborted, thus cannot access my phone data again. But, my big question how phone encryption had triggered automatically ??

Hint : the internet was OFF during night.
My phone is rooted, and I use Lineage OS (Android 7), my device is Samsung galaxy j3 2016 I'm pretty sure it's not malware.

So I've searched and find that https://android.stackexchange.com/questions/199527/how-to-fix-encryption-unsuccessful-and-bootloop-issue-on-andriod-8-1

It increased my confidence that it's not malware and something like hardware.

So, please do you have any ideas for what happened ?

Social media ads for newly-released, indie apps: Any success stories?

    Posted: 16 Apr 2021 06:50 PM PDT

I have an app I've been working on and I have been thinking about running ads for it in the future (after I release it). However, the more I research about ads the less promising they sound (at least for indie devs). I've even heard some people say ads even hurt your ASO because they drive lots of traffic but also lots of uninstalls.

Do any of you have success stories from running ads on an indie app which is newly released? What sort of budget did you have?

Has anyone figured out yet if the warning about scoped storage for people targeting API 29 is a mistake?

    Posted: 16 Apr 2021 12:55 PM PDT

My app targets API 29, and it does use requestLegacyExternalStorage but I am getting the warning on the Play Store telling me that I must let them know by May 5th why I require broad storage access.

I thought that was meant to be only for apps targeting API 30.

Is this a mistake? Does anyone have a definite answer? How can they give us such a short timeline with zero warning? I was under the impression the deadline for switching to API 30 was November for existing apps.

Kivy for develop an app (and Buildozer)

    Posted: 16 Apr 2021 05:15 PM PDT

Im a beginner learning python. And i saw Kivy, i like the idea of making an app for android with kivy, and want to publish the app on the play store.

I see this on documents about how publish on play store.

Requirements for new apps From August 2021, the Google Play Console will require all new apps to: Publish with the Android App Bundle format. Utilize Play Asset Delivery or Play Feature Delivery to deliver assets or features that exceed download size of 150MB. Expansion files (OBBs) will no longer be supported for new apps. Target API level 30 (Android 11) or above and adjust for behavioral changes.

For "make the app" im using Buildozer, and... sorry the ignorance, this will be a problem? What is this Android App Bundle?? buildozer and kivy accomplish this?

Are your earnings exceptionally low this month?

    Posted: 16 Apr 2021 08:54 AM PDT

    Hello everyone.

This month, for no reason I could find, my earnings have been a lot lower than usual on the Google Play Store (not Ads, just stuff like IAP, subscriptions or direct sales).

I found this strange so I asked 2 fellow developers and, surprise, their earnings have been much lower this month as well! It even went as far as both me and one of those developers had a drop of about 15%, so even the drop rate coincided.

So, I wanted to check if this is a widespread issue or simply a coincidence that it happened to the 3 of us.

Without revealing any specific numbers of course, have you seen a decline this month? What % more or less? Do you know why that is?

Note: please only respond if you didn't release any recent updates or new apps that could increase your revenue during this period because then any declines could be masked by this.

Just want to figure out if there's a pattern to this. Thanks in advance!

Can I sell monthly subscription via in app purchases in all countries available on Google Play?

    Posted: 16 Apr 2021 03:51 PM PDT

Are there any countries I should avoid while publishing my app? Should I be worried about breaking any country specific law? What about taxes? Do I have to do taxes only in the country my company is registered in or the countries I'm selling my product in?

Camera permission not needed, help with information

    Posted: 16 Apr 2021 11:31 AM PDT

In my app, I have two places where I have uploading photo options.
The first use case is my profile pictures and the second chat upload pictures.

I am not declaring camera permission in the manifest, and my app works just fine.
The current flow is that I do not use the camera directly in my app, but using the intent that calls for another camera app that has its own permission.

My app works just fine, but my question is, will Google Play allow the app on release, will I have some problem with some privacy or anything?

Best resource(s) for learning how to modify and rebuild an APK?

    Posted: 16 Apr 2021 03:06 PM PDT

Hi, what's the best book/site/whatever to learn how to modify and recompile an apk. I'm not necessarily trying to learn (right now) how to create an app from start to finish, but just how to, for example, remove a sound or add a setting to an app I'm using.

I've Googled but most results, esp here on reddit, are just links to already-modded apks of games and learning apps.

I'm definitely not a developer but fwiw I know a bit about DS and coding in Python, JS, and Go.

    Any recommendations? TIA
