    Weekly Questions Thread - March 23, 2021

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 07:00 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we suggest checking the sidebar, the wiki, our Discord, or Stack Overflow before posting). Examples of questions:

    • How do I pass data between my Activities?
    • Does anyone have a link to the source for the AOSP messaging app?
    • Is it possible to programmatically change the color of the status bar without targeting API 21?

Large code snippets don't read well on reddit and take up a lot of space, so please don't paste them in your comments. Consider linking Gists instead.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/androiddev mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Also, please don't link to Play Store pages or ask for feedback on this thread. Save those for the App Feedback threads we host on Saturdays.

Android apps are crashing due to WebView, in case you spent hours trying to figure out why

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 12:26 AM PDT

It's affecting most popular apps like gmail (check out their recent reviews on google play). I tried to implement a workaround using onRenderProcessGone but it does not work.

    Responding to positive reviews?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 03:34 AM PDT

Are you responding to all your reviews? I'm currently answering all reviews that have a question, misunderstood something or are clearly wrong. My competitors are answering anything - every "5/5 good app" gets a thank you.

I can't find anything about if that'll influence my apps visibility. There are a lot of review 'guides' but none talk about whether it's necessary to answer them or not.

For me, answering a short 5-star review even feels worse.

    Whats your experience?

    Death Vs Signing Key

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 08:00 AM PDT

We all know death is inevitable (as per now). For individual developers who make apps solely, what do you put as the expiry dates for your app signing keys? We definitely know we might not be alive 100 years from now. Just curious. And how about apps like Facebook, Twitter etc who know they might survive for ages, what do you think they might have used as expiry dates in their apps' signing keys?

Google suspends educational app live since 2019 for its title after taking $$ promotion money for it

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 06:49 AM PDT

Hi all, one of my educational guide apps (12000 downloads, 4.5 rating, first published on Google Play 2019) has been suspended by Google for "Deceptive Behaviour" as they claimed the title "<Subject> Of <Country>" was not allowed :

"We don't allow apps that contain false or misleading information or claims, including in the description, title, icon, and screenshots. Apps that advertise a certain functionality in their title must provide the user with that functionality."

From my point of view this seems absurd, what functionality should an app with that title provide ? After an appeal they said the title needs to make clear the app is a guide (which it does in the short desc). Of course if I do that I will lose all reviews and profile. Also I spent money with Google Ads (c $600) to promote the app.

Now I have sent another appeal but am getting no response.

What can I do to get this situation sorted out ? My business is in the UK.

    App details :

    Birds Of Europe (com.citydroid.birdsofeurope)

Amazon App Store (still up - same apk and details) : url - https://www.amazon.com/CityDroid-Birds-Of-Europe/dp/B07SSFJ2C1

    Emails :

    Thanks for your reply.

As previously mentioned, we found that your app, Birds Of Europe (com.citydroid.birdsofeurope) violates the Deceptive Behavior policy. We don't allow apps that contain false or misleading information or claims, including in the description, title, icon, and screenshots. Apps that advertise a certain functionality in their title must provide the user with that functionality.

If your app is intended to be a guide, it must be clearly stated in the app's title with the same language.

As much as I'd like to help, I'm not able to provide any more detail or a better answer to your question. In our previous email, I made sure to include all the information available to me.

You should be able to find more about your issue here:

    Deceptive Behavior policy

    Thanks for your understanding.

    Ian

Hi Ian, I am still unsure what the problem is here and am quite upset and confused about what is going on. I am an independent app developer who has had apps on Google Play and Apple store since 2012 with no suspensions in that time.

Are you are saying my app is not a guide to the Birds Of Europe ? It has had quite a few users and ratings that surely confirm its usefulness as a guide to the Birds Of Europe.

Also I am confused about what is wrong with the screenshot below. It is a list of all the Birds Of Europe, if you click on an item on the list it shows you more details including songs for songbirds. There is a drop down to choose specific European countries.

If there is something specific wrong with the short description and title please can you clarify what you think it is ? As I say I am really perplexed as to what the problem is and feel I need some more guidance.

    Regards

Status of app: Suspended from Google Play due to policy violation

I've reviewed your appeal request and found that your app, Birds Of Europe (com.citydroid.birdsofeurope), still violates Google Play Policy.

During review, we found that your app violates the Deceptive Behavior policy:

We don't allow apps that attempt to deceive users or enable dishonest behavior including but not limited to apps which are determined to be functionally impossible.

We don't allow apps that contain false or misleading information or claims, including in the description, title, icon, and screenshots. Apps that advertise a certain functionality in their title must provide the user with that functionality.

You can read through the Deceptive Behavior policy page for more details and examples of common violations.

For example, your app does not provide accurate descriptions regarding the app's functionality and/or content. You can refer to the screenshot attached for more information.

If the app is intended to be a joke, prank, or guide, it must be clearly stated in the app's title with the same language.

For auditing purposes, we won't be able to reinstate or remove apps that have been suspended due to policy violations.

Please note that suspensions count as strikes against the good standing of your Google Play Developer account. Egregious or multiple policy violations can result in suspension, as can repeated app rejections or removals.

If your developer credentials are still in good standing with Google Play and if your app allows for it, you can publish a new compliant version of the app by following these steps:

Make the necessary changes to your app to address the issue described above, if possible.

Double check that your app complies with all other Developer Program Policies. Additional enforcement could occur if there are further policy violations.

Sign in to your Play Console and upload a new app using a new package name and a new app name.

Please let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks for your continued support of Google Play.

    Ian

Suspensions count as strikes against the good standing of your Google Play Developer account. If your app is suspended, you forfeit the app's users, statistics, and ratings. They will be restored if your appeal is granted and you submit a compliant update.

I have read the above and would like to file an appeal

    App package name

    com.citydroid.birdsofeurope

Statement describing why you believe your app should be reinstated

I am mystified my app "Birds Of Europe" which has been live since 06/19 has been suspended for Deceptive Behaviour after I submitted a technical upgrade for testing. The app is a dictionary type guide to the Birds Of Europe and provides significant extra functionality for searching birds of all European countries by various characteristics and by location. How is that "Deceptive Behaviour" ? Please reinstate my app or explain what is wrong with the app/listing.

In order to provide a better support experience, please tell us why you decided to file this appeal:

I don't think my app violates the policy stated in the notification email

What are the differences between android modules and java 11 modules?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 05:21 AM PDT

As the title says , I've been studying for some time now and came across java 11 modules and instantly android modules came to mind. But I'm not sure how similar or different these are because I haven't used modules in any of my projects so far.

All I know about them is that AS provides me with a default module called "app" and that's it!

If anyone can provide some insights, it would be great.

Launching an app via intent and then pressing back button closes the parent app as well

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 04:40 AM PDT

I am launching gmail app when user clicks a button. Here is my code to open gmail app on android I am using android_intent package.

It opens the gmail app correctly and now when I click the back button in android it closes gmail as well as my app. I don't want it to close my app. I want gmail to open as a different app. I can't use url_launcher package as it is used for sending email. My use case is just to open user's email app so that user can verify email which I have send from my backend during registration.

    const intent = AndroidIntent( action: 'android.intent.action.MAIN', category: 'android.intent.category.APP_EMAIL', ); intent.launch().catchError((e) { context.showMessageDialog(e.toString()); });

    Music Player App

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 04:14 AM PDT

I created an Android Music Player app that lets the user listen to millions of music online for free. You can even download songs, like them, add to playlists, etc. everything you expect from a music player app and everything for FREE. The App does support offline music play too and in the best quality (320 kbps). And the most important thing, NO ADS, NO SUBSCRIPTION, nothing. I hope you will like it. Feedbacks appreciated :)

Is there a way to send a notification to all users that the app has a new update?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 02:14 AM PDT

Whenever I upload a new update, a lot of users don't know about it until going into the play store and entering the apps, then seeing that my app has an option to update. Is there a way to send them all a notification or something using the play store console telling them a new update is available?

    Are React Native apps "Native"?

    Posted: 22 Mar 2021 06:39 PM PDT

I had a recruiter say something to me along the lines of, "We're looking to hire native android developers, so I'm wondering if you have React Native experience". This made me question my sanity for a minute because I thought that "React Native" and "Native Android" were opposites.

Since then I've read conflicting articles on what it means for an app to be "native". Some say React Native builds native apps, others seem to imply it doesn't. What counts as a "native app", and is React Native native?

    Help: Country-specific Subscription Prices Problem

    Posted: 22 Mar 2021 11:38 PM PDT

Hey fellow devs, I'm having issues setting country-specific prices for an in-app subscription.

Situation: My dev account's currency is CZK (Czechia), so I'm typing in default prices in CZK. I'm going for prices like this: 2.99 USD and 59 CZK

The process I'm doing: 1) dev account - Czechia, currency CZK 2) setting monthly subscription - default price 63 CZK 3) all prices get calculated automatically 4) I get 2.99 USD (which is a price I'm going for) 5) now - I set the price only for Czechia country in CZK to be 59 CZK (so it looks nicer)

Outcome: I log into the app, fetch products, and I get 63 CZK for my account with a Czech credit card and Czechia as my country in Google Play.

Can someone please tell me what I'm missing? I've been trying to make it work for two days now, and I'm desperate at this point.

    Thank you

GRPC over REST for Android applications

    Posted: 22 Mar 2021 11:34 AM PDT

Does anyone know good examples of when would you prefer GRPC over REST?
I know that GRPC on the client side is usually mentioned when working with IoT devices, since they are often quite limited energy wise/computation wise. Also found that amounts of requests to the server might be a reason, but seems we are talking huge numbers, which is not what that many apps can even achieve.
Thus, I'm curious on reasons one might have, to switch a typical fetch & show type of application from REST to GRPC. I can only assume that most of the times the performance gains are not worth the hassle, or there are quite a few of complicated nuances to handle.

Also since "you can't improve what you can't measure" - did anyone had experience measuring the improvements before/after switching? (ios/android/backend sides) Small description of what did, or which parts of it required to do the switching would be great.

Android UI templates for displaying charts of data coming from sensors?

    Posted: 22 Mar 2021 04:58 PM PDT

    Hi everyone.

I'm looking for some UI templates that I can use to display data from different sensors that measure things like temperature, humidity, solar exposure, etc.

I would like to display both the current readings of these sensors (with some modern layout) and their historical data with the use of charts with animations. Just like modern fitness tracker apps do.

    Any suggestion is appreciated.
