    Weekly Questions Thread - October 12, 2020

    Posted: 12 Oct 2020 03:56 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we suggest checking the sidebar, the wiki, our Discord, or Stack Overflow before posting). Examples of questions:

    • How do I pass data between my Activities?
    • Does anyone have a link to the source for the AOSP messaging app?
    • Is it possible to programmatically change the color of the status bar without targeting API 21?

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Large code snippets don't read well on reddit and take up a lot of space, so please don't paste them in your comments. Consider linking Gists instead.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/androiddev mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Also, please don't link to Play Store pages or ask for feedback on this thread. Save those for the App Feedback threads we host on Saturdays.

How to force Google to unpublish my App?

    Posted: 12 Oct 2020 03:16 AM PDT

I've lost access to my Google Developer Account, I have just forgotten my password and didn't set any recovery e-mail earlier (yes, I know, this was very dumb). I was trying very hard to recover access to my account with no luck.

The biggest problem is that while you are trying to contact Google Play developer support you are getting a response only from bots, so you can't find any help there, they only guide you through the account recovery process which is useless in my case.

My situation is like losing a ticket from a parking lot and getting a car stuck there forever.

Fortunately, the app was not promoted so there aren't any real users. So I am looking for any guerilla ways to force Google to unpublish this app (so then I can reupload it on another account).

Since still I have access to the back-end I could upload images like "your android contains a virus" and report it to Google – but in this case, I was also totally ignored by them.

Do you have any idea how to get rid of this? What is the best way to make sure that Google would unpublish this app? Maybe buying fake 1-star reviews would help?

How do I make my Chromebook show on Android Studio that is running on Windows?

    Posted: 12 Oct 2020 07:14 AM PDT

I would like to use Log.v while testing my Android apps on a Chrome OS device. I don't have a keyboard or mouse to turn my Pixel Slate into an Android dev environment so I have to make do with the Windows release of Android Studio. However I can't figure out how to make my Pixel Slate show up on the "connected devices". Only my Android phones and tablets show as devices. But I need to debug and Log.v my app on Chrome OS because it crashes only on Chrome OS and works fine on Android.

How do I connect my Pixel Slate to my Window's Android Studio? (The Pixel Slate is already set to developer mode)

Stream a video chat to other users

    Posted: 12 Oct 2020 05:18 AM PDT

Are there Android APIs that allow to implement a video chat between two users and to stream the content to other users? If not, what would be the best approach to do it?

    Backup/Restore in my app.

    Posted: 12 Oct 2020 04:35 AM PDT

Perhaps I am missing something here, but the build is Google app data backup is totally worthless and not fit for purpose?

It seems to only backup/restore to the same device, and if you uninstall, it gets wiped. What on earth is the point of it? What use-cases does it actually solve?

Anyway, my app for several years has allowed users to export their content to external storage and back in again, either on the same device, share it with friends, a different device, I don't care, it's their content. As google has slowly locked down SD card access, it's become harder and hard to support this across all API versions, and with the data backup being so naff, I am looking for some other ideas.

My content I want to share/backup is just a JSON file of data, a single file. What real backup sharing options do I have, if I want to target API30? Is there a way of sharing the file and importing/exporting with Google Drive? Any libs that can help with this?

    Thanks.

    Google Play Store Changes

    Posted: 11 Oct 2020 04:01 PM PDT

I got a prompt from the Google Play Console which said " Changes to subscription settings You must have account hold and restore implemented in your app by November 1, 2020. Subscription pause and resubscribe will also be enabled by default, unless you explicitly opt out." I'm not sure exactly what this means as my app is free and has no subscription required, does anyone know?

Switching from web dev to mobile dev? Good or bad idea...Need advice

    Posted: 11 Oct 2020 12:58 PM PDT

    Thanks for reading.

I'm a self taught developer who has around 3 years professional experience doing web development but recently I've been contemplating moving to mobile development specifically Android since I don't use any Apple products.

The past few years, Web Development has become extremely saturated with CS grads, bootcamp grads and self learners which makes the field extremely competitive and saturated. Usually when someone starts to learn to program the first thing they are told to do is to build is a web app. This is the main reason I want to switch fields. It's hard to find a job. I also don't want to do HTML/CSS anymore.

I've done some researching and found some answers to some of my questions but I still need some clarification.

    • Is Android development a competitve field to break into without any prior experience?
    • How common is it find entry level Android developer jobs?
    • What's the learning curve like? How long will it take for someone to learn Kotlin and the whole Android development ecosystem? I come from strictly web dev so it's been all JavaScript since day one but I've done some TypeScript and Python before.
    • Do I need to know/expected to know Java?
    • What are the pros/cons of mobile dev compared to web dev?
    • Is interviewing just as ridiculous as web dev?
    • Am I dumb and I should just stick with web dev?

    Thanks.

Lots of Buttons for one onClickListener?

    Posted: 11 Oct 2020 09:05 AM PDT

Building your basic d20 dice rolling app for practice. Basic functionality is to have a row of ImageButton that, when one is pressed, sends a value to MainActivity.kt and spits out a random number in that range to a TextView.

Currently, I (kinda) have it set up in a when statement to check for the button id, the idea being "when a button is pressed, if it's [enter ImageButton id here], then the value is [enter number of sides here]." So far, it looks like this:

    var buttonValue = when("not sure what to put in here") { R.id.d4 -> 4 R.id.d6 -> 6 R.id.d8 -> 8 R.id.d10 -> 10 R.id.d12 -> 12 else -> 20 }

I haven't implemented an onClickListener yet, for obvious reasons, but if such a thing is possible without setting an onClickListener for each button I'd love to know how. Thanks in advance.
