    Weekly Questions Thread - August 31, 2020

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 03:56 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we suggest checking the sidebar, the wiki, our Discord, or Stack Overflow before posting). Examples of questions:

    • How do I pass data between my Activities?
    • Does anyone have a link to the source for the AOSP messaging app?
    • Is it possible to programmatically change the color of the status bar without targeting API 21?

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Large code snippets don't read well on reddit and take up a lot of space, so please don't paste them in your comments. Consider linking Gists instead.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/androiddev mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Also, please don't link to Play Store pages or ask for feedback on this thread. Save those for the App Feedback threads we host on Saturdays.

[Dynamic Feature] App already in Playstore causes problem?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 06:33 AM PDT

    Hello,

My app is already in the Playstore. I want to add a dynamic feature to it.

Whenever I try to test and see if it works with internal tests, it gives me error -2 and says that it can't find the feature's module. Which is weird because the bundle I uploaded has it.
Could this be because when it tries to download it, it gets confused by the app that's already in the playstore (Which does not have the module)?

    Thanks.

Package Names - Open Source project

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 06:53 AM PDT

What is the requirement when using an open source app. Do you make the changes you want keeping the original package naming convention, or do you change everything to match yours? I recently made changes to one, and might upload it to the playstore, but don't know if that is allowed or is as long as I change everything.

Should I ask my app users to disable battery optimization?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 03:24 PM PDT

    Hi,

My app widgets need to connect internet to update itself. I use alarmmanager. But it doesn't work on some devices because battery optimization. I want to ask my user to disable it with REQUEST_IGNORE_BATTERY_OPTIMIZATIONS permission. But what if Google ban my app? How can I be sure. There are some other apps which are same category they ask disable battery optimization to users.

Whats your take on mobile ad networks?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 04:01 AM PDT

Rant on ad networks : I have used admob a year ago but then it got terminated in couple of months without payment. They stated own clicks which hadn't done. Then I switched to facebook ad network and after a year they terminated my account too without any reasoning? Like they dont want to pay the devs or what. Moreover I had meager earnings may be around 6$ in a year and now they block me after a year? Like what the hell? Which ad network I am supposed to use now? The worst part is they dont specify reason clearly or dont specify at all. No one is there to help at customer service. Guys need your insights.

Install Charles proxy on android > 7.x

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 02:06 AM PDT

Hi there! I am not really sure that what I am asking is offtopic, but if it is please delete it.

In order to debug an application that I do NOT own I started using Charles proxy(https://www.charlesproxy.com), due to its intuitive and easy interface. However in order to make it work with SSL I have to install on my device its certificate ( https://chls.pro/ssl).

What Charles states is that :

As of Android N, you need to add configuration to your app in order to have it trust the SSL certificates generated by Charles SSL Proxying. This means that you can only use SSL Proxying with apps that you control.

I had a look in internet and it seems that it is still possible to install the certificate in a rooted device, but I am not an expert on that.

Is there somebody who already tried that attempt with success?

Icon Credits Library - Easily give credits

    Hi,

I just published the first completely working release of my very first open source Android library (furthermore I'm still a student with not that much time, so please be considerate).

    https://github.com/cyb3rko/about-icons

It deals with simplifying the process of giving credit to icons which need attribution (like from flaticon.com, freeicons.io, etc...), because I had to deal with it in my own apps multiple times.

I hope my library works as intended and it helps somebody in making their apps.

I would really appreciate feedback for both the general layout (look at my sample app) and also the process of implementing it into own apps.

    Some example photos:

Making modifications to an Android ListView on a global scale (overriding?)

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 05:30 PM PDT

Is there a way to make modifications to a ListView in an app on Android that you don't have access too? Suppose you really like this app on the play store. The app has vertical padding between the listview elements. I have a rooted phone. My goal is to somehow find a way to remove the padding in the listview elements without touching the code or decompiling the apk so the elements themselves look bunched up together.

Like is there a way to specify "padding = 0px" that would apply to the listview class on the Android phone but for basically every app? Similar to how changing the font size affects all the apps usually.

Confirmation of app review and approved

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 01:18 PM PDT

I have got the timed publishing on and uploaded the latest version to production, saved, reviewed and rollout to production.

I could see my new version in the activity log and Go Live button is enabled. Does it mean my app is reviewed and approved? I didn't see any confirmation email or update on the activity log saying it's reviewed and approved. Can I just click on Go Live to release to the public?

I want my latest version to go live as this is an update to the existing app and user should not need to delete the app to get the version though there is a title change for the app and should have the update automatically on the mobile. Would the app update automatically when I click Go Live?

How to update a column in room? (please read first)

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 08:29 AM PDT

So I observe my room db in recyclerview via viewmodel. To update a row I call update method on repository object in activity. Am I doing it right? Because this is what I have seen in tutorials. My question is if we are using repository object for update, create and viewmodel to read data, whats the use case for setdata and postdata methods of livedata? Also how to update an entire table(overwrite)?
