Summarizing 4 years of gaming on Android : games list with my ratings

    Posted: 19 Jun 2020 04:31 AM PDT

    Hey guys !

Long time lurker, I though I'd give back to the community by sharing my own gaming experience on Android.

To give some context: I'm in my 30s with about 20 years of gaming experience. I'm a software engineer and have kids. Which leaves me with little time to play. Hence a huge preference for games that allow short (3-5) gaming sessions.

Feel free to ask if you want more details about a game, or want my opinion on one I didn't mention : I've probably looked into it and chose to ignore it for some reason. If not, I might do it now.

    Great

    • Clash Royale : game design's amazing, UI is good, balance is good, drop rate are OK... Challenging yet fun. Somewhat f2p friendly (progress is a bit slow but still good).
    • Horde : O.M.G. I've played it so much. Surprisingly rich gameplay, extremely stressful... Amazing time killer.
    • Kingdom Rush : I love this game. If I had more time I'd play all of their games. My all time favorite solo Tower Defense game.
    • A Blind Legend : can you play a game without even looking at it? Well you can play this one!
    • ∞ Infinity Loop : relaxing puzzle game. Good one.
    • Warlords of Aternum : turn based strategic game where I spent hundreds of hours. Why did I stop playing that one? Can't remember anything bad about it, must have been an IRL reason.
    • Mini Metro : face the challenge of building a subway network as demand evolves. Pretty challenging puzzle game!
    • Little Alchemy 2 : same as the first one, but more polished. Everyone in the family installed it and we competed to discover everything before the other ones. Good times.
    • Brawl Stars : fast games, skill matters yet room for progress... I mean, they know how to make good games.
    • Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia : honestly freaking good. Well done, FF feel, generous progress. I just wanted something more refreshing.
    • Red and Blue : fresh CCG game with potential. I just don't have time to dig into it, but give it a try.
    • Word Domination : casual Scrabble with a twist.
    • Dragalia Lost* : ARPG with single-finger controls, portrait display and deep gameplay. PVE multiplayer game. I think I found it. I found my new game. The one I'll put thousands of hours into. We'll see, I started playing a week ago.

    Good

    • Hearthstone : The game's great. As a former MTG player, Hearthstone is a lot smoother and streamlined. I played it without paying much, but it's better if you buy the extensions.
    • Arena of Evolution - Red Tides : out of all the Auto Chess games, this one was my pick. Solid game with good games modes. Because that genre will only survive with shorter games.
    • Fallout Shelter : I want to like it, it seems good, but I just can't get into it. Dunno why. But if felt well made, so...
    • John GBC : want some old school gaming? This one works.
    • LIMBO : subtly grim, beautiful and great gameplay. Loved it.
    • Alto's Adventure : relaxing yet challenging, which is an unusual mix.
    • Drag'n'Boom : how much time did I spend on that game? Hu, that much? No regret.
    • Krosmaga : simpler gameplay than Hearthstone, more complex strategies, some bluff. Too bad the controls and UI are... ill suited for smartphones. Because the game's actually good.
    • Data Wing : only racing game I've played, and it was good. I'm just not very into those games, so I quickly dropped it.
    • Redungeon : roguelike endless runner? 8 bits? Well I liked this one.
    • Tactile Wars : good gameplay, nice graphics. The game feels good to play.
    • Battle of Polytopia : Civilization-like on mobile. Just one more turn...
    • Beasts Evolved : somewhat unique gameplay, but yet another collection-based game. If you didn't invest thousands of hours into one already, you might want to give this one a try.
    • Battlejack : blackjack-y mechanics. Interesting gameplay, but progress is problematic.
    • Void Tyrant : blackjack-y mechanics for that roguelike, where you build your deck on the fly. Fun for about a week.

    Decent

    • Dragon, Fly! : halfway between Flappy Bird and Alto's
    • Clash of Clans : Oddly enought while I love Clash Royale, I absolutely hated this one. Build times?
    • Ingress Prime : The original Augmented Reality game. Somewhat led to Pokemon Go.
    • Find a Way : simple gameplay, well executed, long hours of play. But it lacks... something.
    • Kawaii Killer : Somewhere between Fruit Ninja and Happy Tree Friends.
    • Tiny Bird : was it fun ? I don't remember much of it, but it feels like it was OK.
    • Dungeon Rush : was somewhat good but I started playing short after they stopped caring about the game. Major disappointment.
    • Angry Birds Evolution : I don't know why I've played this game because there's nothing I like in it, but it was extremely addictive.
    • UniWar : well made (yet not pretty) turn based strategy game. But I liked Warlords of Aternum more.
    • Badland Brawl : physics based game that is otherwise just like Clash Royale. Went back to CR because of commitment bias.
    • Almost a Hero : idle RPG clicker. I don't like idle game but I've played this one for some time, so it must be decent.
    • King of Thieves : build defense, beat other players' defenses. Actually decent gameplay, but not very engaging.
    • RAID - Shadow Legends : I hate to put that game so high in rating, but it's actually well done. I simply hate : 1) auto battle 2) gatcha games.
    • EvoCreo: Pokemon-like game. Good game, but I don't like having to re-learn everything for a similar gameplay.
    • Crystal Soul : there's potential in that CCG game. Felt fresh, but not mature.
    • Legends of Runeterra : I've read a lot of good about it. It's decent, there's just nothing special about it IMO. Try Red and Blue instead.
    • Battle Legion : early access but there's potential in that mass battler game. I've enjoyed playing it for a few hours.
    • World Quest : idle MMORPG. Nice concept. They've got a major update coming, so it'll get better. They'll reset your advancement with that update. That sucks. Anyway, idle grinding feels less bad, but I don't enjoy it.
    • Troll Patrol : complex and rich gamplay, seems like a decent or good game... But I didn't like it.

    Disappointing

    • My Singing Monsters : I don't like this kind of games, but I had some fun with that one for like a few... months? Weeks?
    • That Level Again : yeah I'm sorry, I know lots of people loved it but I didn't.
    • Connection : Infinity Loop is better.
    • Pokémon Quest : feel like there some potential, but oh my was it boring to play!
    • I Monster : I liked playing that game, yet dropped it for some reason I can't remember. Not a gameplay reason, so it must have been how they tried to get my money...
    • Spellbinders : gameplay was promising, but wasn't that the one where PvP was mostly against bots?
    • My Turn: CCG game with non-CCG-looking battles. Some like it, I didn't.
    • Evertale: pokemon-like gatcha game. Good until I got stuck by a boss you can't beat without a specific skill (that I didn't play).
    • Jurassic World : it was fine-ish until I realized there was no real time multiplayer option. Or is there? It just suddenly hit me that there was no point playing this game.
    • CATS : probably decent if you really dig into it. I didn't.

    Bad

    • Pokemon Go : You know of it. I've played it for like a few months, but there really wasn't that much to do at the time.
    • A Dark Dragon : nop. Feel like an idle something with LIMBO look, but no.
    • Duels - Epic Fighting Action RPG PVP Game : the beta was actually decent, but the game felt so... empty. Like the whole concept of the game felt boring after a few hours...
    • Questland : The match 3 mechanic is amazing. I wanted to like the game, but there's... So. Much. Chore. I'd rather clean my house.
    • Tower Duel : multiplayer Tower Defense sounds good, but no. Not like that.
    • Life on Earth: I found no interest in that game. Zero.

Either don't remember or don't care enough to even rate

    • Critter Clash
    • Era of Celestials
    • Hero Wars
    • Battle Arena
    • Chess Rush and other auto-chess games
    • The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot
    • CodyCross
    • Troll Patrol (moved to Decent)
    • Towerlands

    ----

Disclaimer: those ratings reflect my experience with the game AT THE TIME where I played it. I didn't went back to see how they've evolved. I actually rarely do, maybe I should?

    Also, I hate grinding. Deeply.

Are there any games like this? They always show up in ads when I'm playing something, but when you go to the Play Store link it's just another generic turn-based fighter.

[DEV] I've just released my second game "Rising Sushi". A one touch arcade about stacking giant pieces with a claw crane. Hope you like it.

Hello everyone. I'm a solo developer who likes to make easy to learn, hard to master games for mobile, with minimalist and precise controls (one or two touch), polished game feel, and unique visuals that look pleasant.

My new game, Rising Sushi is an arcade where you have to build and endless tower of sushi dragging and dropping pieces with your claw with a single touch of the screen.

The player must place the pieces in the right sequence, take and remember orders to assemble the correct combinations of sushi to earn extra points, and master the sushi cannon, a fever mode you activate getting consecutive perfect drops that is played like a shooter mini game.

The game's look is inspired by classic woodblock printings, and uses hand-made animations as transition between the menu and the different parts of the game.

If anyone is curious and try it, all feedback is really appreciated.

Actual Games like the Hero Wars (false) advertising

    Posted: 19 Jun 2020 05:28 AM PDT

You may have seen some ads (i.e. on Facebook) of a game called "Hero Wars". The ads are misleading because it seems that Hero Wars is a puzzle game where you pull out levers/barriers to set free certain things or destroy things. But this mechanic is actually only in some kind of bonus level in Hero Wars, which is a completely different game.

So I searched for a game that has this specific game mechanic of these ads. First I found this archived post in this sub, but there was nothing but other people with the same question. But i kept searching...

Now the good news is that I finally found something! It is not as good as i had oped for, but it is something. The following List is just the apps I found, so there may be others. The order is arbitrary and has no specific meaning. The links lead to the PlayStore of each game.

Notice that some of these are not really good. Many are far too easy or simply have bad level design. Also almost all of these include a massive (and annoying) amount of ads. (You can bypass the ads by turning on flight mode but surely it is not the same.) At least they are all free.

    Have fun playing!

[REQUEST] Something similar to Clash Royale but

    Posted: 19 Jun 2020 11:07 AM PDT

I'm looking for a tower defense game that focuses on 2vs2, 3vs3, 4vs4 or similar but the focus is on multi-players.

Preferably something that has a ranking system (so I can be matched with comparable players)

I do like the simple straight forward game play and look of Clash Royale but I'm open to seeing what else is out there too.

Hello guys, I just wanted to share my unity game in making, I hope to get this to playstore in few weeks :-)

It's very simple endless (if you can do it) runner game and it controls just by one tap, great for when you have just few minutes :-)

If you have any idea how to improve I'll be happy to read it :-)

Also if someone would like to join forces with me to create some sprites and art, I'd be happy to cooperate with you :-)

    Omlet Arcade Voice Chat Issue

    Posted: 19 Jun 2020 01:19 AM PDT

I recently updated my Realme 5 to Android 10 and after updating, during a group call, the audio seems to stutter. It's perfectly normal when calling one person but when there is three people including myself, it then starts to stutter hard. It wasn't like this when it was still an Android 9. It's like the call itself is lagging. My net is perfectly fine after doing tests and even tried messenger group call and it was fine with 3 or more people. Could this be an Android 10 issue or is it just my phone's update?

For reference, I updated to Android 10 with the link given by the official Realme website.

[DEV] I Wanted to Make a Different Kind of Mobile Game (Game: Walk Through the Valley)

    Posted: 18 Jun 2020 03:51 PM PDT

So I love location-based games. Well, that's not entirely true. I love the idea of location-based games. Even before Pokemon Go was a thing, when I was just a wee lad, my friends would daydream how cool it would be to layer the fantastic world of a video game over the real one. To explore our neighborhood like we were exploring a dungeon, avoiding dangers, looking for treasure and secrets.

But something never quite fulfilled me about the way Pokemon Go utilized the idea. When I first played it, I set aside time for it. I would lace up my shows and pick a nice place to go for a walk. But before long, I wasn't walking anymore. PoGo became something I flipped open on the bus, in the subway, when I had a minute to kill--not a way to get out and explore the world.

In Pokemon Go, it doesn't really matter where you go, because "over there" is the same as "over here". All you have to do is move around a bit so the game feeds you more encounters. It can feel like a collect-a-thon strapped to a step counter--and I say this as someone who's gotten a lot of joy, not to mention exercise, out of Pokemon Go, and has commensurate respect for the work that went into it.

It's also a little weird that you spend all your time in the game looking at your phone--not the real-live world around you, which is supposedly the game's best feature. Again, you can't blame developers for this. How else can you engage with the game's mechanics? There are good reasons for these kinds of games to be structured the way they are.

But I wonder if this was the only way. I wonder if location games could, under different circumstance, have evolved into something else entirely.

"Walk Through the Valley" is my attempt at something different. Certainly it's no PoGo. It's nothing but a little one-person experiment, my first 'real' game--probably with the bugs to prove it. But it approaches the idea of a "location-based game" in a way that I don't think anyone else has. It's even single-player! It's a game where the direction you walk in doesn't just matter--it's the primary decision you make.

    You can find it here.

I've only had a few playtesters so far, so I'd love to get more people's feedback on the concept, and how well I managed to execute it. And please do use the contact info to let me know if you find bugs. I feel like I got them all, but...you know.

Recommendations for a 2d mining game that isn't Terraria, and isn't a minigame/super minimalistic design.

    Posted: 18 Jun 2020 01:26 PM PDT

So I might be getting super picky here, but I have been looking for a game similar to steamworld dig available for mobile, primarily based around mining with some type of progression. I haven't been able to get into terraria on PS4 so I doubt I'll be able to get into it on mobile. Other games I have tried are pocket mine (fun but its more of a minigame and not quite what I'm looking for), Doug dug and dig deep (both fun but also minimalistic/minigame types), lost miner (basically generic minecraft in 2d), and mines of Mars (closest to what I'm looking for) - does anyone have any other recommendations?
