Are we (and all the tech reviewers) counting Android support times wrong?

    Posted: 03 May 2020 07:23 PM PDT

After constantly hearing about how iPhone SE gets 5 years of support, while Pixel phones get only 3 years and others get 2 years, it got me thinking: is everyone counting the support years wrong? Because if not, how come the Galaxy S7 sitting in my drawer just received a March 2020 security update? And how come iPhone 5s received a bug fix update like 5 weeks ago?

I realized that there's a big difference between how long the phones are up-to-date in terms of having the latest OS, and how long they are up-to-date in terms of still receiving bug fixes / security updates. This is what I have so far:

    # of OS version updates Years of being up-to-date w/ the latest OS Years of having latest security update / bug fixes Additional support?
    Google Pixel 3 4 3 No
    Samsung Galaxy/Note 2 3 3 4th year of quarterly security updates
    iPhones 5 6 6 7th year of critical bug fixes (?)

Do you guys agree with me? Is the tech community wrong in claiming that Android phones receive only 2 years of support? I never owned a Pixel, and never had an iPhone for longer than a year, so let me know if I got any numbers wrong. It would also be interesting to update this table with other phone manufacturers: how is Sony doing? LG? Oneplus?

(Note: I fully understand that iPhone vs Android update situation is way more complicated, with Play store updates coming to even the oldest Android phones; that is not what I want to discuss here. I also am not trying to excuse manufacturers here - especially Samsung REALLY should do 3 OS feature updates, with 4 years of monthly security updates and 5th year of quarterly updates.\)

(Edit: I just realized, I might be breaking Betteridge's Law!!)

appending to video files is what has been missing from camera apps for a long time now

    Posted: 03 May 2020 12:24 PM PDT

I recently watched some old tapes from 1998 that were recorded on a Hi8 video cassette. What struck me, is that they are geniuinely interesting to watch, as back in the day, you basically cut your video while you record it. You can sit down and watch those videos in a single sitting without lifting a finger, literally, they are cut together already. Today, you have multiple single video files, and it's just a pain in the neck if someone shows you multiple videos and you have to wait for the other person to flick to the next file. How about a function or app where you could have multiple themed video files, that you can append to, so basically replicating that video cassette feel?

Am i the only one missing this kind of functionality?

Android vs iOS - Software updates

    Posted: 03 May 2020 10:42 AM PDT

    Hi,

Flashed latest LOS 17.1, GApps micro with LOS recovery on my Oneplus6,

All good, No issues. However i do see many apps are unavailable for installation on playstore, apps like Netflix, CAMS says "This app is not compatible for your device".

Its not an issue any more for me as i have reverted back to stock OxygenOS. However i am very much keen to have LOS on my phone because someday or another Oneplus will stop software support for Oneplus6. Custom ROM is only way to keep OS updated. But these strict checks by playstore makes me to take a step back :(

I like the way oneplus keeps a balance between hardware, software and price, But when it comes to software updates there is no one like Apple, Even iPhone 5s got updates for 5 years, thats insane !!!

It would be great if all major OEMs provide atleast softwrre updates for 5 years, atleast for flagship phones. These flagships has great hardware which i think eaisly lasts for 5 years (If battery is replaced every year). I am using Oneplus6 for 2+ years now, I have no complaints when it comes to performance. Battery might be an issue after some months, But i think its not worth to replace phones because of ageing battery, replacing battery will be a lot cheaper than buying new phone.

    Thoughts ?
