    Weekly Questions Thread - March 02, 2020

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 02:57 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we suggest checking the sidebar, the wiki, our Discord, or Stack Overflow before posting). Examples of questions:

    • How do I pass data between my Activities?
    • Does anyone have a link to the source for the AOSP messaging app?
    • Is it possible to programmatically change the color of the status bar without targeting API 21?

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Large code snippets don't read well on reddit and take up a lot of space, so please don't paste them in your comments. Consider linking Gists instead.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/androiddev mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Also, please don't link to Play Store pages or ask for feedback on this thread. Save those for the App Feedback threads we host on Saturdays.

Apps missing on PlayStore, no emails or warnings received. App is neither removed or suspended but can't be found on Play Store.

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 06:09 AM PST

Anyone has any idea what is going on? This seems to be widespread issue.
Couple of our apps are gone from play store and I got a mini heart-attack.

I immediately logged in and everything is as usual. No warnings or emails or any kind of notifications.

Does anyone has some info on what the fuck is going on?

    Android Studio 3.6 xml design/split/code

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 05:47 AM PST

I updated android studio last week to 3.6, and although I love everything so far, this one thing is really extremely annoying, every time I open a new xml file (UI, drawables, etc) it's by default opened with "design" view, and every single time I have to go all the way to the top to chose "split" or "code", instead of it being on the bottom at least. who the hell edits their ui screens or drawables in design view!

anyone knows a quick trick to default to split or code for all file?

Distributing an APK outside of Play Store - is it possible to have a download link from a virus scanning service that performs a virus check and thus guarantees to my users that the APK is clean so they can trust me easier?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 08:11 AM PST

Well, the idea is very old and works with desktop software for ages, e.g. softpedia.com, cnet, tucows, etc.

    Genymotion Stuck at boot screen

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 06:02 AM PST

    Genymotion Stuck at boot screen

am on Mac OSX Catalina. Genymotion was running perfectly fine. However, suddenly it is getting stuck on splash screen/boot screen and stays there forever. I am using the latest version of Virtualbox (6.0.18).

Steps I have taken so far:

    1. Reinstalling both (Genymotion and Virtualbox)

    2. Deleting the .Genymobile folder

    Which didn't fix the issue

    My specs:

    MacBook Pro Retina late 2013

    16gb Ram

    i7 4850HQ

Here are the logs from virtual box

Making a software keyboard (no previous android development experience)

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 12:27 PM PST

    Greetings,

i just recently switched to Android from Windows Phone, and i really, REALLY miss Windows Phone's keyboard. I tried 5-6 different keyboards but there's always something wrong (SiftKey's forced space after punctuation can't be disabled, general lack of navigation keys everywhere, and when they're present they take too much space - see hacker's keyboard).

So, since it's android, i said to myself "why not make my own?".

Problem is my mobile development skill simply doesn't exist. I spend 90% of my time writing in C++ for Windows or Linux, and barely use Java for 3 or 4 university courses that require it, still targeting desktop environments.

When i jump into something new i find it easier to start working after putting my hands in an example project; however, while there's a lot online about normal applications, i found very little about keyboards. Just a step by step guide that focuses mostly on layout, and this https://developer.android.com/guide/topics/text/creating-input-method

but of course it skips on the project setup.

Is there any place when i can find example projects for "system" apps like keyboards, launchers, etcc?

Find location history without Google maps timeline

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 03:54 AM PST

    Hi everyone,

My girlfriends phone was stolen 2 days ago, and yesterday was found in front of her door. It is intact and fine but we want to check its location history because we have a theory who could have taken it and want to cobfirm it. Location history is turned off, so I wondered if there is an API or other way to access it via adb? Thank you a lot in advance, hope someone can help.

Admob "Site Behavior: Navigation" policy violation

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 03:33 AM PST

    Hi,

I used AdMob ads for a while now, and never faced an issue. A week ago however I received a notification that my app violates the AdMob policy with the reason "Site Behavior: Navigation". From the description however I cannot tell what is wrong with my app. I already asked for a review twice but it was rejected again. Also, I can't seem to reach any support team from admob to raise the issue...

Can someone maybe check my app and tell me what is wrong? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=clipz.streamclipz

It's a simple twitch.tv clip download app, I am showing a banner at the bottom of the home screen and an interstitial ad after 3 clip downloads from a user.

Thank you very much in advance!

How is your experience using Android Studio in Chromebook?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 03:54 PM PST

I like the Chrome OS ecosystem but my chromebook is not enough to run Android Studio. I'm thinking about buying new one that's capable of running it. As a chromebook user, do you recommend developing Android in Chrome OS?

Need a code review for a small demo project

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 11:23 PM PST

I recently completed this small project as part of an interview process and would like to have some feedback on it. I feel I have picked up some bad habits so feel free to rip it apart and point out whatever you think is bad. Also I need some help on two things -

    1. Fixing the espresso test that currently does not work because of Dagger setup (I guess because it throws an error saying appComponent was not found).
    2. Removing the explicit casts in the repository class (or suggest a better way to do it)

I would also like to know your thoughts on whether this is good code and whether I am hireable.

How on earth do you get the emulator working on AMD

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 10:29 AM PST

So I have just upgraded my main machine from an i7 6700 to an amd 3900x and today I remoted into it to set up my developer environment and do some work on my app. Only to find out that amd processors are not supported by default.

I enabled the windows hypervisor platform. I have the latest android studio and the sdks are installed. However when I try to run a virtual device to test my code (or when I try to create a new virtual device) it always tells me "haxm is not installed" or trys to install it...failing ofcourse as there is no intel processor in my system.

I read with out hardware support the emulator would be slow, i am ok with that but see no way to do it.

I read they added support for amd if you enable the hypervisor...I did but it still wont work.

    Pulling my hair out here

    *EDIT
It was a bios setting, however enabling it causes a very very minor performance issue. For most this will be a non issue but given how infrequently I would need it I have opted to just use a physical device. This is somewhat limiting as I do a lot of my coding remotely.

Docker for uploading android APKs to google drive

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 08:24 AM PST

hi, I have created a docker image, built from android-build-box, to upload files to google drive. It contains a program to upload your files to google drive. You can give Access Token, Refresh Token, Client Id, Client Secret as Environment variables. So your script section in the pipeline will contain something like - ./gradlew assembleDebug - cd app/build/outputs/apk/debug/ - java -jar /drive-uploader.jar uf --folder "My APKs" --file-path "app-debug.apk" --file-name "my-app.apk" Docker - https://hub.docker.com/r/ashwinbhskr/android-build-box-with-drive-uploader

With View Binding, do you use underscores or camelcase for View IDs?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 08:12 AM PST

With Kotlin Synthetics, the reason why camelcase is more supported is we can use the IDs as variables.

    exampleView.title = "Title"

But with View Binding, we always do

    val exampleView = findViewById(R.id.example_view) val sameExampleView = binding.exampleView
