Weekly "anything goes" thread! Posted: 20 Mar 2020 05:40 AM PDT Here's your chance to talk about whatever! Although if you're thinking about getting feedback on an app, you should wait until tomorrow's App Feedback thread. Remember that while you can talk about any topic, being a jerk is still not allowed. [link] [comments]

Massive increase in uninstall number in last 2 days? Posted: 20 Mar 2020 08:09 AM PDT I've been seeing increase in uninstalls in last 4-5 days, but saw ginormous uninstalls yesterday and day before that. 16th March- 412 Installs, 619 uninstalls. 17th March- 383 installs, 531 uninstalls. 18th March- 388 installs, 735 uninstalls. 19th March- 431 installs, 1609 uninstalls. Is anyone facing the same issue? Retention rate for my app normally is around 30%, which is pretty good in my opinion and I've never lost more users than I gained in a day before. Is it reporting fault or something else? [link] [comments]

How do you work with Network System Discovery? Posted: 20 Mar 2020 12:47 AM PDT Cross-post from r/Kotlin, as this topic is a bit difficult to find answers to. I still havent had any luck. Basically what I have learned is that you need to test on real devices. But I still haven't gotten much luck when it comes to service types and names, to have those explained to me would be very helpful. So how do you work with NSD durning the production/ debugging? How do you test that it works properly? Could someone explain a little bit what "service type" and "service name" are. As service type when registering equals to _http._tcp NO DOT, and when listening to a protocol it's with A DOT at the end. And an example for this with real machine (printer, PC, another phone). Like this is what I get when I run avahi-discover https://imgur.com/a/DA7F14M , if someone could use this an example to explain what is going on exactly.Thank you for your time. I am stuck on this for like 5 or so days. It's been frustrating. The examples online are horrible and just a copy paste of the documentation. [link] [comments]
make toolchain script silently failing Posted: 20 Mar 2020 06:33 AM PDT Hello, When I use the NDK's shell script for provisioning toolchains (e.g. for adding STL support), then the script says it installed to the install dir. But ls confirms nothing was done. What do? [link] [comments]
Tracking daily streaks - How to? Posted: 20 Mar 2020 06:27 AM PDT Im making a very very simple meditation app. The core of it is done but I want to be able to track daily streaks and display them in a neat minimalistic layout. [link] [comments]
Posted: 20 Mar 2020 06:12 AM PDT I have a financial app to track daily expenses. Generally I get around 400 installs a day. For the last week I am seeing a decrease in download. (around 150 each day) and number of sessions are also less. Not sure if people are more engaged with the Corona issue worldwide and that is affecting the downloads. Is anyone experiencing a similar trend ? [link] [comments]
Which ad network to use? How does AdMob compare to Appodeal and other networks? Posted: 20 Mar 2020 05:49 AM PDT What ad network are you using for your app? I am using AdMob, but wondering if there are other better ad networks. For example, Appdoeal. Is anyone here using it? How effective have you found it? Maybe there are better networks out there? Any information would be much appreciated. [link] [comments]
How to create Activity scoped ViewModel instance in Kodein? Posted: 20 Mar 2020 05:37 AM PDT I have tried this approach which obviously isn't working. // In Kodein module
// Calling it lazily from fragment
This doesn't work, since it might be called before the fragment even attaches to the Activity. This is my first attempt to use DI, I started with Kodein, but this part of using, Activity context in binding isn't clear to me. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you. [link] [comments]
Posted: 19 Mar 2020 09:34 PM PDT DISCLAIMER: I am not a doctor - I leave it up to you to do your research - I have provided some links which you can followup on below. Sleep deprivation Developers routinely pull long hours because they cannot afford the software/context reset that happens (when they sleep and wake up) ie long sessions tend to produce better productivity (esp. if a developer is on a roll/ in the zone). However in these times, developers need to be extra careful about avoiding sleep deprivation:
Vitamin D deficiency Developers routinely work odd hours, often at night to escape distractions, esp. if they work from home. In addition to that, many live in colder climates which require staying indoors, or their locations have fewer daylight hours. The end result is reduced exposure of skin to sunlight, and often vitamin D deficiency. Dark skinned folks living in these conditions are even more susceptible, on account of higher melanin in their skin. However Vitamin D deficiency is know to reduce immune response to flu:
reference: Dr John Campbell prominent youtuber for novel coronavirus updates (also appeared on DW news): More on Vitamin D, and also why you are more likely to get regular flu in colder (and less humid) months - Dr Mike Hansen video - Also mentions do not want too much vitamin d either as it is not expelled from the body that easily:
References One of the best daily analyses of novel coronavirus on YouTube is Medcram YouTube channel - is an intensive care physician/pulmonologist (lung specialist) - click on their channel name from this video and then click Videos tab to see the latest videos - he does a daily update of the stats and in depth analysis with paper references for the mechanisms of drug action etc.: Another is Dr John Campbell (a PhD with an multi-year history of teaching on YouTube - has now also appeared on german tv DW News regularly) - click on their channel name from this video and then click Videos tab to see the latest videos - he does a daily or twice daily update of the stats and his analysis of where things going (he was an early critic of UK/US lack of proactivity in the face of inevitable boom in number of cases - however he does not dwell on the past once UK/US have started taking action - he also provides situation reports for different countries and his recommendations):
Some background reading, and the prognosis for a resumption of economic activity prior to the expected 8 months to a year (by which time a general vaccine will be available).
Tests PCR test for viral presence - which takes a day or two for results.. S Korea was producing and using a higher reliability version of the test which they used extensively and thus identified and contained the virus. And then there is the antibody test which can be a shorter a 15 min assay test - Columbia univ Prof Dr David Ho (of HIV antiviral fame) on CNN said these available at 1M per day and good for screening population for prior exposure (not good for early detection since antibodies appear a bit later) Testing regimen In countries like S Korea they were testing aggressively with a more accurate local commercial test, with drive-thru tests and less restrictive than China. In other countries the test is available for payment, and sometimes free if it is done if you fall into risk category (foreign travel, exposure etc.). In the US/UK the policy was initially to conserve the tests and to only do under physician orders - but this could change with arrival of more tests, and esp. of the 15 minute assay tests (which can be produced at 1M per day by foreign companies) which measure prior exposure and can be useful for gauging it's spread - the problem is that the FDA takes it's time to put the stamp of approval on the new tests.
Treatment options on the horizon HIV antivirals seem to help from Chinese preliminary reports - however yesterday's New England Journal of Medicine report out of china says one combination Kaletra did not show huge improvement - but other antivirals might (and should have some impact - some suggest they may only be effective if given early and less effective if given later): https://www.biopharmadive.com/news/coronavirus-kaletra-clinical-trial-nejm/574435/ Despite 'heroic' effort, coronavirus study finds little benefit to repurposed HIV drug
Chloroquine - and even better hydroxychloroquine (well known antimalaria drugs - even though malaria is bacterial) works to enable zinc entry into cell which disrupts viral replication - this has shown promise as some early china reports were positive to this also, and since then more reports, and recently a preliminary small sample French report is showing very big difference in early recovery 11 days shortened to 4 days etc hydrochloroquine in combination with antibiotic to fight secondary opportunistic bacterial infections was most effective - see the diagrams at the end of this PDF: This was the recent French preliminary study positive on hydroxychloquine plus antibiotic azithromycin: https://drive.google.com/file/d/186Bel9RqfsmEx55FDum4xY_IlWSHnGbj/view Hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin as a treatment of COVID-19: results of an open-label non-randomized clinical trial However there were 2 cases out of 20 or so who did not respond to the hydrochloroquine + azithromycin (were mother and son, so they theorize it could be genetic factor where a few may not respond to it)
The way ahead Trump also mentioned chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine in yesterday's press conference, where the FDA commissioner also talked about fast tracking antivirals for compassionate use, so physicians can quickly use them where they feel it may help. Trump seems to focus on chloroquine and it seems that he has been informed of the French report etc It is a cheap and drug with known history used to be used for malaria - only negative is heart arhythmia if given too much, so dose has to be not too little and not too much, but otherwise well tolerated with known side effects. A vaccine is 8 months to 1 year away. So I suspect wth the trials from China we should have some clear winners in terms of drug candidates for antiviral combinations within a month. And hydrochloroquine + azithromycin seems to be already high confidence. Given the impact on the economy which reasonably cannot go back to old ways for another 8 months, the only solution seems to be the drug candidates within one month - if these can reduce the death rate to 1/6 then we are back to regular flu levels (if hydrochloroquine starts being given prophylactically to early cough cases). A sky news report talks of how the UK is thinking of easing the lockdown once hospital pressure reduces, at which point the cases will balloon again, and then lockdown again, and so on until vaccine appears: Basically the virus will remain in the bouquet of viruses that we get every season, so it will be included in yearly vaccinations from now on. Plus if there are mutations then flu vaccine to adjust every season, as happens routinely now. So in summary there is light at the end of the tunnel, and western countrues will be under pressure to do aggressive hydrochloroquine + azithromycin type drug therapy to bring danger level down to size, so economy can be resumed in 2 months lets say. How much can you make as a Junior Android App Developer? Posted: 20 Mar 2020 04:56 AM PDT I know this is a general question. But I want a realistic number from the market exactly, something real and not based on assumptions. I think now there's high competition but how much can you make on websites like UpWork, freelance.com.. Etc per month? And what are the websites you find useful. [link] [comments]

Posted: 19 Mar 2020 08:48 PM PDT I've never used the android emulator to test any app that I work on. I install to an actual device and run the app. Isn't this the best approach? Or is there anything advantageous in using the emulator? [link] [comments]

What tools you use to make tutorial videos Posted: 19 Mar 2020 08:30 PM PDT I tried making a first tutorial video using Quicktime on Mac and recording my screen. I am not at all satisfied with the quality of my video. It is not even visible on my iPhone. What tools you use, or how can I improve on using Quick time. How to enable xiaomi notifications? Posted: 20 Mar 2020 03:12 AM PDT Recently Xiaomi enforced more control over notifications. I saw several guides on how to enable them manually, but none of how to enable them programmatically or at least open corresponding settings screen from the app. At the same time multiple applications have that enabled, mostly messenger application, like a telegram, Viber, WhatsUp. Posted: 19 Mar 2020 10:55 PM PDT Hi, there beautiful devs. I have been trying to find a good starting point to implement a custom made sign language interpreter in my android app using a tfilte model. The operation will be in real-time. But this is quite an advanced topic for me. I did some research for using CameraX to get an image analyzer on the go but as the library updated there is no tutorial with the beta version. And also I wish to try and use some cloud services like AWS sage maker or azure machine learning to get the model off the app and thus reduce its size. Despite that, I am clueless about all these points. And am very much frustrated as of now. Your suggestions are all welcome. Kindly indulge your knowledge if possible.. [link] [comments]

Just another post ranting about the GP DMCA issues Posted: 19 Mar 2020 10:02 AM PDT So... We had 2 of my applications taken down on December 2018 from a company in India on behalf of another company claiming that our LOCAL TV STATION application, had something from the Badminton World Cup (?) we didn't even know that existed until last year. (yes, we had signed permission from the local tv stations to include them in our application and even monitored what they broadcasted over our app to be sure no copyright infringement was made) After dealing with the bots, emailing both of the Indian companies, searching for their representatives on LinkedIn and even trying to call them I think we have reached a full stop. Do you guys have any advice or have even been able to contact a human on the Google side? We have proof that the company was just claiming apps randomly, They included several applications in the same claim they used to take down ours and those apps weren't even related to ours.... Is Google really just accepting claims and taking things down? [link] [comments]
