    Weekly Questions Thread - January 13, 2020

    Posted: 13 Jan 2020 02:57 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we suggest checking the sidebar, the wiki, our Discord, or Stack Overflow before posting). Examples of questions:

    • How do I pass data between my Activities?
    • Does anyone have a link to the source for the AOSP messaging app?
    • Is it possible to programmatically change the color of the status bar without targeting API 21?

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Large code snippets don't read well on reddit and take up a lot of space, so please don't paste them in your comments. Consider linking Gists instead.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/androiddev mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Also, please don't link to Play Store pages or ask for feedback on this thread. Save those for the App Feedback threads we host on Saturdays.

Google Play: Rating Manipulation? Just me going down?

Google Play: Rating Manipulation? Just me going down?

The ratings of my games are going down since about end of November 2019. They have dropped from about 4.2 to 3.9 as of today. Does anyone make the same experience? I don't think it's just me, but I think someone is manipulating ratings big time?

While I am scrambling to keep a 4+ rating, I see developer such as: Three Card Game 5.0/4.8 average rating for their games. Looking at the comments of their games "Word Attack" and "Tonk Rummy Multiplayer", the ratings are clearly fake. If it's not a duplicate (easy to find, just read the comments), it's the same words simply re-arranged in the comments!?

Why is Google not doing anything about that? It's blatantly obvious. Also, now that the rating give the average of the past 3 months, it's easy to manipulate other apps' ratings. Simply bombard them with 1-star reviews for 3 months and their apps will tank.

    Anyone else?

Requirements and obligations when implementing analytics service such as Flurry and Firebase?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2020 03:26 AM PST

We are looking to implement analytics service in our apps, but we are worried because of all "data" panic and fear of being striked by Google Bots.
So say we want to implement Flurry/Firebase/AppMetrica or any other analytic service to learn how users use our app, collect some events and crashes

Aside from obvious, adding to privacy policy, what else do we need to do?

Are there any laws? Beside GDPR/CCPA
Do we need to present dialog to user and ask for consent?
Do we need to give user option to opt out of data collection?

Note: We will be collecting only anonymous data, crashes, which functions are used, and generally how users use our app. Non of those collect any personal info, only app related information's like those mentioned above.

Should one really adopts the mentality of "ship first, polish later" when selling apps on google/apple?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2020 12:37 PM PST

    Hi all,

I understand the feed back is invaluable at the begging of your app. But what about the negative comment and rating that accompanies your unpolished apps? Doesn't that hurt you more in the long run?

    Thank you

    MVP and fragments

    Posted: 12 Jan 2020 11:14 AM PST

Hi, I'm having little trouble with this, I'm doing MVP architecture and I really don't know which way would be correct to instanciate a presenter into the fragment or only instanciate the presenter into the activity and send the data of the fragment to the activity. Have you guys encountered a problem like that an how did you solved it?

Get unique children from child of child

    Posted: 12 Jan 2020 06:30 PM PST

Get unique children from child of child

I have a 'Member' node that displays different user id's within other parents. I made a reference to the child '-Ly-silAlV0...' and attempted to retrieve each user inside 'Members' such as 'a05EDbP0...'

I'm getting null pointers and other errors. How do I retrieve a list of unique users inside the Member node?

    reference.addValueEventListener(new ValueEventListener() { @Override public void onDataChange(DataSnapshot dataSnapshot) { for(DataSnapshot child : dataSnapshot.getChildren() ){ String memberid = child.child("Members").getChildren().toString(); changeUserFirebase(memberid, "null"); } }
