    Xiaomi rooting on Linux

    Posted: 22 Nov 2019 06:51 AM PST

    Hi,

Is it possible to root an Xiaomi device (Mi 9, in my case) with Linux (Ubuntu, in my case)? I tried to download the .exe version of the Mi Unlock tool and start it with Wine, but it gives me an error that I can't solve and I lost my patience.

Also if I press the "Unlock Now" button present here, as all the guides about rooting suggest to do, it sends me to the chinese Xiaomi forum login page, and not to the bootloader unlock request.

    TTS reverting to robotic voice

    Posted: 22 Nov 2019 04:42 AM PST

I use text-to-speech to read articles and listen to notifications using Voice Notify when my hands are busy. I select a voice in tts output, preferred engine Google, install voice data and it works well for a bit. Soon after the voice reverts to a robotic, less natural female voice that I assume is a default used when other voices aren't installed. I can change it but it reverts again soon. Other engines don't seem to work as well as Google's: cereproc glitches when I get a notification while listening to music, and Ivona voices just don't sound as good to me.

Has anyone seen something similar and maybe know a solution?

    Location/timezone very wrong

    Posted: 22 Nov 2019 08:11 AM PST

I live in Europe, but for some reason the location shows Sao Paulo.

If i go outside (location settings = high accuracy) the phone finds a correct location. But after a few minutes under the roof it changes again to Brasil.

    Started happening 3 days ago.

Exactly the same "bug" on two phones- HTC One M7 (android 5.0.2) and HTC U Ultra (8.0). Both phones show exactly the same street in Brasil on maps. I've never been to Brasil.

What I tried was restarting the phones and deleting cache.

Any idea what could be wrong? Thank you

SD card not formatting as Internal Memory. Help?

    Posted: 22 Nov 2019 11:47 AM PST

Ok so I recently got two new phones. A Blu Grand XL LTE and Samsung A20. The Samsung has Android 9. I put an SD card into the phone because as a frequent mobile gamer, I know I'm going to be using a lot of space on the phone. The phone prompted me to format the SD card so it can work with the phone. I did that but nothing happened. It didn't format from External to Internal memory and I still have to manually transfer apps from the phone to SD card, plus it won't let me transfer media or documents to the SD which take up the majority of space on my phone. I tried to go back and format it as Internal but the only option I'm getting is "Format". No "Format As Internal" as other articles mentioned, just Format. I formatted it about 3 or 4 times but still nothing.

On the other hand, my Blu runs Android7.0 and formatting another SD card onto it as Internal storage was a breeze. It only took a few seconds to set it up and everything is automatically saving to the SD card. With my Samsung however, I can't for the love of GOD get it to do that.

Is there some change that happened between Android 7.0 and 9 that changes this process? How do I get it to work on my Samsung? I use it for the majority of my gaming and school-related things but can't get the SD card to format as internal and I'm quickly running low on storage

FB Messenger calls/Video calls on LTE doesn't work?

    Posted: 22 Nov 2019 07:45 AM PST

Does anyone have an issue with Messenger in terms of calls/video calls on LTE? It works fine on WIFI. I can easily text and send pictures etc. But when it comes to calls/video calls on LTE it goes to calling - > connecting -> call failed. I don't know what changed, I don't mess with the settings so idk whats up. Its gotten to the point where I factory restarted my phone, losing all of my data in the process, but it still glitches out. Is there something in the menu that I overlooked? Here are some things I tried/failed:

    - Uninstalled FB to make Messenger a standalone app.

    - Erase Cache/data

    - Log out/log back on messenger

    - Uninstall/reinstall messenger

    - Rechecked the "permissions" settings and switched everything to on

    - system restored phone

I really appreciate the help cuz not having Messenger work on LTE for calls is putting a strain on some of my relationships abroad :(.

Can anyone create an app that shows notifications when face is recognized, but NOT unlock the device?

    Posted: 22 Nov 2019 11:26 AM PST

Most face identification methods on android devices are in-secure, and their fingerprint readers are much better for security and unlocking the device.

So i'm wondering if someone could make a app, that huawei for instance already has, that hides notifications until the face is recognized, but does NOT unlock the device with it?

This would make it easier to see notifications on the device without compromising security.

I turned on a floating notification for texts and I can't remember where the setting is to turn it off.

    Posted: 22 Nov 2019 11:25 AM PST

I've turned on a floating notification that pops up on my screen whenever I get a text message. You're supposed to be able to tap on it and see the message and respond to it, and then the floating notification is supposed to go away. However, it doesn't work. When you tap on it a window pops up with your contact at the top corner, but the window is blank. You have to dismiss it by long pressing the floating head, and dragging it to a trash can at the top of the screen, then going to the messaging app to read the text and reply to it anyway, so there's no point.

As it's broken and annoying to long press it every time to get rid of it, I want to just turn it off, but I can't remember where the setting is. The setting page itself had a long list of apps you could toggle it on or off for - that's all I remember.

I've hunted and searched for it in the settings endlessly and can't find it. Does this ring a bell for anyone? Samsung Note 8 if that helps. Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Google adds and removes voice match in a week time...And more android/google annoyances.

    Posted: 22 Nov 2019 11:14 AM PST

Just like facebook makes sure there is no way you can contact them, google has the same thing going for android. I'm quite annoyed at some google descisions that make me feel like having a half baked product for Dutch/ Netherland devices.

Why, is because of two things:

    1. Google disabled "ok google" or also known as voice match for dutch devices for ages. They enabled it finally in october, but after a week its gone again. No explanation, no media coverage, just gone. And the biggest joke is that if i put system language to english but have the assistant set to dutch, i can make voice match work. So why cant it be enabled for dutch languages? Why enable it for a week to disable it again when it worked fine? At least say why and if/when its coming back...
    2. Google maps still uses the super old robotic google female voice, while in other parts of android it sounds like the proper female voice that sounds fairly human. Why??

And i'm sure more people share this annoyance, i know people are annoyed at animation effects not working on third party launchers for example.

Its so sad we cant poke google to get at least a response from them.

    Samsung Battery Replacement

    Posted: 22 Nov 2019 07:07 AM PST

I was wondering if Samsung did battery replacements at their stores. I have a Samsung Galaxy A5 2017 and I am looking for a reputable store/service for battery replacements. I live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada so I wanted to know if I could just drop my phone off at Samsung and get the battery replaced or something. Any suggestions and contributions would be greatly appreciated.

What is this strange logo in the status bar?

    Posted: 22 Nov 2019 09:52 AM PST

    https://i.imgur.com/hR4GbXZ.png

To the left of the WiFi symbol - what does this mean? I've had a Google and can find no useful info, it disappears when I don't have notifications open.

    Thanks!

Moto G5 Plus Blocking Texts when Not Supposed to.

    Posted: 22 Nov 2019 08:25 AM PST

Hi all, my mother's Motorola g5 Plus is blocking messages from going through to one specific automated system for doctor's appointments when she tries to confirm them. When I go through the Android Messages app (version 5.2.056) there are no numbers blocked. Any ideas on what's going on?
She is running Android OS 8.1.0 on the 32GB Moto g5 Plus.

DND - Block notifications VISUALLY (on Xiao Mimi3)

    Posted: 22 Nov 2019 02:08 AM PST

I have my phone on silent permanently anyways, what I want from DND is to hide notifications visually (it is really annyoing when you are using and app/playing a game and notifications keep popping up where you want to touch the screen).

Is there any way to do that? I read that you can visually block notifications, but my phone only gives option to mute notifications.

Can't decide between the Oneplus 7, S10E or S10+ (used, and both are exynos)

    Posted: 22 Nov 2019 04:01 AM PST

S10+ (exynos) used for 450€, S10e (exynos) on Black Friday for hopefully leds than 400€ or OnePlus 7 for 370€?

For me the battery time and performance is the most important aspect.

Which is why I'm hesitant in getting an S10e, or an used s10+.

Can't Transfer Media Files from Phone to PC

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 02:56 PM PST

    Phone: Sony Xperia Z2 Compact

Problem: Xperia Companion App keeps saying my phone is locked when it isn't, and tells me to allow file transfers when it already does. Sometimes it connects but doesn't allow me to transfer files (the options are still greyed out).

What I've done: Restarted both PC and Phone, Turned on USB debugging, Turned off USB Debugging, Uninstalled/Reinstalled Companion app, Tried through file explorer (phone shows connected and how much space it has, but doesn't allow me to see or move anything "empty"), Switched USB cords, Switched USB inputs

    Thanks!

Edit: I took my SD card out and it started to work! BUT that's the whole reason I'm trying to transfer files! I'm trying to move my SD data to my PC
