My review is in the works now that I'm back at the studio, but here are some Pixel 6 sample photosOverall I could give it a 9/10 but I have a looooot to explain. Stay tuned!

    MrMobile:

My Pixel 6 Review will arrive a bit later than others. For the past decade, "hitting the embargo" has driven my content timing. But sometimes - especially on a month like this, with the standards I try to meet- I simply can't deliver a review to be proud of in that timeframe.

    Dieter Bohn (The Verge):

Apologies for not having a Pixel 6 review out today — the bike accident chaos meant I caused the team a lost few days. dcseifert is jamming away on the review now and has lots of very good thoughts on them — stay tuned!

Sony is now pushing ads to Xperia devices owners from their Support app

    Posted: 26 Oct 2021 01:57 AM PDT

I just got this notification in my Xperia 1 III (keep in mind, Sony's previous flagship that only got released to market a couple of months ago).

Personally, I find ridiculous and outrageous that they are trying to upsell the Xperia PRO-1 to their previous flagship owners.
And not just that, but the fact that app that is sending the notification is their own "Support" app, which inside its configuration has no toggles whatsoever for ads and marketing pushes.

Screenshot from their "notifications" page. Note how the marketing push is still present in the status bar but not in this screen.

Their Support app's settings page. Only settings related are the diagnostics and privacy ones, and they are all disabled.

    Detailed diagnostics disabled.

Opted out of content customization for my Xperia account.

Edit: Notifications cannot be disabled for Sony Support app (the toggles are greyed out).

    Way to go Sony!

I finally figured out what's been bothering me about the Android 12 notification shade animation

    Posted: 26 Oct 2021 01:29 AM PDT

[Repost, previous submission removed due to wrong flair]

So I recently updated to Android 12 on my Pixel 3, and my initial impressions were less than satisfactory. In particular, something about the notification shade seemed viscerally unsatisfying, and I think I've pinned down what's so uncanny about it.

Previous versions of Android implemented the notification shade as a proper shade, like a blind being pulled down from the top of the screen. To make this effect convincing, the shade's bottom edge curves upward to appear "on top" of the content. The screen stays motionless as the shade comes down, and as the shade comes down and the notifications fade in, the screen fades to gray to bring focus to the revealed content.

On Android 12, the notification shade's bottom edge is curved down. This causes it to appear as though the quick actions are appearing from behind the screen, as though the screen's contents are the label on a matchbox that is slid open to reveal the quick actions within. As the shade bottoms out, the screen fades to an opaque gray and notifications fade in.

Now the problem is, the screen's contents don't move down to make the "box lid opening" effect convincing! I think this is the key factor that makes the notification shade so goddamn uncanny -- my brain subconsciously picks up, based on the curve of the top edge of the viewport, that the screen is supposed to be sliding down, but the screen stays put! This throws my instincts for a loop each time I open the shade.

It would be much more satisfying if the screen's contents slid down to reveal the quick actions. The curve should feel like the virtual representation of the the physical top edge of the device's screen slid downwards, something like this mockup I threw together:

Do y'all think this would be an improvement over the current animation? If so, I hope the UX team sees this :)
