Posted: 22 Oct 2021 06:16 PM PDT Title. As much as I have many issues with Android 12 (including but not limited to padding issues and wasted space, Material You colour limitations, weird "static" animations, etc) the new Extra Dim feature is my new favourite button when I'm in bed at night. I love being able to customise exactly how dim my screen should get, and it's made not waking my partner up when I come to bed in the early morning that much easier. Big up this feature [link] [comments] | ||

The Redmi Note 10 5G (aka Redmi Note 10T 5G in India) in review - An underrated midrange gem Posted: 22 Oct 2021 02:03 PM PDT So, I inquired about this device (and its rebadged sibling, the Poco M3 Pro) on r/Xiaomi, since I was in the market for a back-up device (primary being the Vivo X60 Pro - Snapdragon variant), and the scanty, yet detailed responses to my query made me pull the trigger on my purchase, and I ordered the device off Amazon India (6 | 128 GB, 'Graphite Black'). My reason for picking the Redmi Note 10T over the other, 'best reviewed' devices under the Redmi Note 10 stable was the simple fact that this was the only 5G ready device. Back-up device or not, I have always been something of an early adopter, and buying an LTE only device, at the tail end of 2021, going into 2022, did not appeal to my sensibilities. While 5G networks have yet to roll out in India, I would rather have a 5G enabled device, ready to harness next-generation network standard speeds, than have 5G networks launch, and not be able to access them owing to incompatibile hardware. Your mileage may well vary. Another factor was the desire to test drive a Mediatek 5G SoC (under their 'Dimensity' banner) - Mediatek has come a long way, from playing second fiddle to Qualcomm, to rivaling, and even surpassing the latter in terms of producing powerful, and competent chips, with sustained performance, advanced AI capabilities, and excellent thermal management (here's looking at you, SD888). The Redmi Note 10T is powered by Mediatek's Dimensity 700, which brings up the rear of their 'Dimensity' line-up. Fabricated on a 7nm finfet process, it straddles the fine line between being powerful enough, while being power efficient at the same time. Interesting enough, for a spin. First impressions: My first impressions of the device far exceeded my expectations. While the device is entirely a polycarbonate construct, it uses a higher quality polymer, and is therefore anything but tacky looking (unlike Samsung's 'glasstic'). The in-hand feel was reassuringly solid, with a pleasant heft to the device, and the solid polymer construct body was very reminiscent of the Nokia Lumia devices of old. Display: The FHD+ IPS LCD display is crisp, with excellent color rendition, and very little color shifting, when viewed from extreme angles. The 90Hz refresh rate works a charm, and browsing through social media feeds is pleasantly snappy. The display is bright enough for short bursts of texting on a sunny day (with mandatory hand cupping under a high noon sun), and more than sufficient for viewing your subject when using the camera, coming to which... Camera: The camera, out of the box, using Xiaomi's default camera app is disappointing. While it can certainly suffice for the occasional casual shot, it's far from good. But slap on a Gcam port (I use a version of the Gcam ported to the Redmi Note 9s, another Mediatek powered device) and it completely transforms your camera experience. I am a wildlife biologist, who studies tiny lifeforms, and was able to capture excellent macros/close-up shots of the tiniest subjects, with rich, creamy background bokeh, using the device's primary camera, without any external lens attachments, under natural, and artificially lit conditions. I would go so far as to say the Redmi Note 10 5G is an excellent camera phone, if on a budget, with the caveat of having to use an after-market camera app, to utilise it's primary (and only strictly usable) sensor, to it's fullest capabilities. Unedited camera samples (please open each image in a separate window, and feel free pixel peep to your heart's content): https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=11CpBI2HwQkyISu2oZuYJQGW_ru8BsfQW Software & user experience: This was another pleasant surprise - I last used MIUI on the Xiaomi Mi 10, a device I ended up replacing with a Nokia 9 PureView (which served me very well all through 2020, and well into the first quarter of 2021), and the experience was anything but wholesome. Ads. Unwanted pop-ups. And inconsistent UI elements. All of that is changed with MIUI 12. Gone are the inconsistent UI elements, the tacky default icons, and the glitchy, adware infested MIUI of old. MIUI 12 is fluid, beautiful, intuitive, and more importantly, very well optimised for this device. Admittedly, I chose Canada as my default location, but having done so, I haven't seen a single advertisement since running the device. There's also an app drawer now, which means I haven't used a launcher with one of my devices, for the first time, in years, and I am the sort of person who slaps Nova launcher even on devices running stock Android (including Pixel, OnePlus, Nokia & Motorola, all of which ship with a clean, skinless or nearly skinless UI). Daily driver & battery life: I ran the Redmi Note 10 5G as as my only computer (and camera) on my most recent week-long vacation along India's Western coastline. Movies, music, podcasts, heavy duty camera usage, and lots of social media - the device handled it all like a champ. To the point where I absolutely did not regret not carrying my laptop, or another portable with me. Battery life is good, easily lasting through the day, and them some. A plug in before bedtime, will top it up relatively quick, especially if it isn't completely empty. And while 18w isn't the fastest of fast charging, it can be overlooked given the price point of the device. In direct comparison, my Nokia 9 PureView had a much smaller battery capacity, coupled with a quad-HD POLED display (with no option to downgrade screen resolution because Android One 🤷♂️), and it took 1hr. 45m to reach full capacity, while being capped at 18w 'fast charging' speeds. And that device retailed at ₹55,000+ on launch. The Redmi Note 10 5G's charging speeds are very livable. Thermals: The thermal management of the Mediatek Dimensity 700 powering the Redmi Note 10 5G is commendable. The device heated up only twice, under very heavy camera usage, at peak noon temperatures. Both times, I was still able to get my shots, before powering down the device, to allow it to cool down. When overheating, the device tends to disconnect navigation, as well as the camera. Once the device had cooled down, I was able to use it without a hitch. All in all, very impressive thermal management for a midranger. Cons: Weak haptics. Fast charging speed capped at 18w. And while the single mono speaker gets sufficiently loud, with a very respectable output, dual stereo speakers, coupled with slightly better camera hardware would have made this device an even more compelling purchase, especially under the sub ₹20,000 category. Conclusion: If you are seeking a solid, no frills, 5G ready device with a large battery capacity, dependable cameras, very good display, a decently loud (albeit mono) speaker, with a performance which punches far above it's price point, and one which does not skimp on essential sensors, so useful for navigation, and gaming (the Redmi 10 Prime lacks a gyroscope sensor), look no further than the Redmi Note 10T 5G/Poco M3 Pro 5G.
