This weekly Sunday thread is for you to let off some steam and speak out about whatever complaint you might have about:

    • Your device.

    • Your carrier.

    • Your device's manufacturer.

    • An app

    • Any other company

    Rules

    1) Please do not target any individuals or try to name/shame any individual. If you hate Google/Samsung/HTC etc. for one thing that is fine, but do not be rude to an individual app developer.

    2) If you have a suggestion to solve another user's issue, please leave a comment but be sure it's constructive! We do not want any flame-wars.

    3) Be respectful of other's opinions. Even if you feel that somebody is "wrong" you don't have to go out of your way to prove them wrong. Disagree politely, and move on.

Isn't "Keep Wi-Fi on during" a helpful feature, if implemented correctly?

    Posted: 16 Oct 2021 05:34 AM PDT

I have an old Samsung phone with an old Android version. It has "Keep Wi-Fi on during", and I think I saw that option in old custom ROM's, too. If you don't know, it is a feature that allows turning Wi-Fi off automatically when the screen is off and the device is not charging. I cannot find this menu in newer versions of Android, so I think Google has dropped it.

I have tested with devices that I seldom use. In the power usage graph, the Wi-Fi was continuously consuming battery during sleep. If I turn Wi-Fi off, devices could last a LOT longer in sleep mode. Without the "Keep Wi-Fi on during" feature, in order to make the device last longer in sleep mode, I would have to manually turn Wi-Fi on/off, which is a hassle, and it seems that Google has removed the API to turn Wi-Fi on/off programmatically, too, so I cannot automate it by creating an app.

I know that the feature has a problem. I.e., it turns off Wi-Fi, but not cellular data, so background apps try to use cellular data network instead, which is kind of dumb. But it doesn't have to be like that, does it? I mean, the system should also turn off data network, too, when it turns off Wi-Fi, and may only periodically enable Wi-Fi, if some background apps demand it. If it is implemented that way, I think it will be helpful for people who have lots of seldom used devices. I know Google won't bring the feature back, but I just wanted to hear what other people think about that feature.
