Microsoft keeps sneaking Bing into the contextual search menu on Android

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 08:24 AM PDT

Microsoft continues to plug "Bing Search" into the contextual search menu in Android via the Outlook app.

This was reported last year, appearing to some users.

Now, the Outlook app has a bundled web browser which opens up whenever someone taps the Bing Search option (even though I've disabled it in the Outlook app). I don't have Edge installed, and my default browser is Firefox.

The Outlook app works really well for mails, I never face delayed notifications like I do with the Gmail app, and the focused inbox feature is very simple and accurate.

But Microsoft needs to stop pushing Bing so hard using such dodgy tactics to unsuspecting users.

Just a quick post incase you were unaware that Chrome now has a preview page tool when you hold down on a link.

Super helpful if you're reading an article that links to others.

[Magisk GitHub Update] - Mentions of "MagiskHide" removed

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 01:29 PM PDT

Following John Wu's tweet yesterday stating that Magisk was back (https://twitter.com/topjohnwu/status/1431380423762841602) it looks like some of you were right regarding MagiskHide being removed.

It appears that Magisk will be returning without the "MagiskHide" feature included as mentions of it have been removed from the GitHub page.

The link to the commit is here:

    https://github.com/topjohnwu/Magisk/commit/d93c4a5103a5c39a55db145b85d8b09a1e23be2c

It looks like Magisk will just be a root program with no way to provide bypass to apps that look for root (Maybe it will still be supported via an unofficial module?).

John Wu hasn't made an official announcement yet of what will be changing.

EDIT: An official announcement has now been made here: https://topjohnwu.medium.com/state-of-magisk-2021-fe29fdaee458

Material You + Resplash Auto Wallpaper

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 11:15 AM PDT

I'm really loving Resplash's auto wallpaper feature in combination with Material You. Resplash allows setting wallpapers from unsplash, and can also update the wallpaper on a set interval. On top of that, you can filter wallpapers by user or collection. For the past few years I've always used photos from photographer Annie Spratt on my phone and laptop, so having her photos used to theme my device on an hourly basis is super fun!

Whatsapp new TOS will be optional (unless contacting business) according to WABetaInfo

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 03:32 AM PDT

    https://wabetainfo.com/news-about-terms-of-service-they-will-be-optional/

We can finally announce that they will be optional with a future update but, if you want to send a message to business accounts that use cloud providers, you won't be able to message them if you don't accept the terms

From a response on their Twitter account, they also say if you've already accepted there's nothing you can do, but if you just don't contact a business account there's no change anyway, as was previously reported.

My take on how Android phones can be improved and satisfy more people

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 05:34 PM PDT

Some background information: The majority(like 90-95%) of the people I know and the people around me use iPhones, and I'm the odd one out with a Android Phone(Pixel specifically). I'm starting to get pulled in myself, so here's my take on how Android phones can satisfy more people. I hope this is taken into consideration, so perhaps more people could use and stay on Android.

I feel like the most important thing that Android could use is a better ecosystem. The apple ecosystem is what lures people in and traps them in. The apple ecosystem is great, but the problem is it's locked down. Its only available on apple devices. However, that's not a problem for many, as the services are worth it and many people use it. If android wants to be more popular among iPhone users, the ecosystem needs to match or be better than that of apple's. Here are some examples.

    1) Messaging - This is probably the main reason why apple is dominant in the US. iMessage has way more features and works better than most messaging apps on Android. Also, it just works out of the box, with no need to install anything or do complicated setups. Open the phone, and it works. Meanwhile on android, we have a complicated mess. The default is still the old and outdated sms/mms for a lot of people. RCS is getting adopted, but the problem is (1) it's limited and (2) it's not as feature rich.

So far, chat/RCS is only available in Google Messages and Samsung Messages(I think). If someone doesn't have it, they have to be convinced to download google messages, which drags it down to the same level as any other third party messaging app, where you have to go around and convince everyone to download it. I had to do this myself. This isn't a problem on iPhones, as I said before, everyone has iMessage and it just works out of the box. Google could open up the API, or work with manufactures to bring chat features to all messaging apps, or require that RCS of some type be installed and enabled by default on the OS level. People could also be notified to set it up in the initial phone setup because not many people even know it exists. In addition(though I haven't experienced it myself), some people have issues with RCS not working or disconnecting. That should be taken care of as well. This could fix the messaging mess on Android and make sure all users have a good default messaging service.

The other part of this is that RCS/Chat isn't very feature rich. Many features are basic and included in many third party apps already. If google wants more people to use it as the default, it not only has to work by default, but it also needs plenty of good features to set it apart. Plugins/apps of some sort would be very nice, as well as replying to messages and many other features.

If Android wants to satisfy more people with a good messaging service, it needs to work reliably as the default messaging app and have plenty of good features to support it. Also, google has to commit to it and not kill the service.

    2) Video calling - Google duo seems to be a good default video calling app that many people use. I'm not sure if it's installed by default on all android phones, but it would be nice if it was. Also, I'm not sure if it already does this, but setting it up during the initial phone setup can let many people know it exists as well. Facetime is taking many of Duo's features though(screen sharing and portrait mode), so Duo is gonna need more features. Google just has to commit to it, add more features, and not kill it.

    3) File sharing - Nearby share is nice, but the problem is, I feel like nobody even knows it exists besides the techie people. Meanwhile with airdrop, almost everyone knows it exists and uses it. So many people can just casually say, "airdrop it to me" and they would know what it means. Meanwhile, if I try to say "nearby share it to me," many people have no idea what I'm talking about and I have to guide them though the setup, which can take a while. I did this a couple times myself. Having a setup and tutorial at the initial phone setup could solve this issue(not sure if it already does that).

These aren't the only things that can be improved, there are plenty of other things. However, these are the major ones.

That's pretty much it for how I think Android can be improved and satisfy more people. I didn't get too much into technical things because that's not the most important for many people. I feel like people mainly use phones for messaging, calling, and file sharing, and that's what needs to be focused on. Apple has these values taken care of very well, with the caveat of being locked down. If the Android ecosystem can rival apple's while not being completely locked down, it would be a big bonus and boost in popularity. It can get many people to switch.

Also, I need to say, the diversity and variety of Android is both a good and bad thing in this situation. The good thing is, there are so many Android devices of all sizes, types, manufacturers, and features to choose from. The bad thing is, getting everything to work together would not be easy. If every single manufacturer used a different messaging app, different video calling service, and different file share system that doesn't work on other devices, the situation will get even worse. Instead of a free and open platform, every company will have its own locked down ecosystem and everyone will have trouble communicating with each other. All android manufacturers should work together, agree on standards, and adopt them. The ecosystem is better a whole, not in separate pieces. Otherwise, most people would be better off getting what everyone else has, which in my case(and I'm sure for many others) is an iPhone. If android as a whole can unite under a powerful, feature rich, and open ecosystem, the apple ecosystem could maybe even be opened up and more people could have a say in what they really want without being locked into anything.
