Weekly Anything Goes Thread - April 16, 2021

    Posted: 16 Apr 2021 06:00 AM PDT

Here's your chance to talk about whatever!

Although if you're thinking about getting feedback on an app, you should wait until tomorrow's App Feedback thread.

Remember that while you can talk about any topic, being a jerk is still not allowed.

    Android System Design Interviews?

    Posted: 15 Apr 2021 11:32 PM PDT

There seems to be little to no resources online on what these interviews will look like or what topics I should know. If anyone can provide any tips or helpful advice on how to prepare for an interview like this, I will greatly appreciate it.

How are you promoting your apps?

    Posted: 16 Apr 2021 05:40 AM PDT

    As the title suggests.

    In addition to that -

    1. How much time do your app promotion method(s) take per day?
    2. Are the method(s) efficient enough in your opinion?
    3. Can you offload the marketing stuffs to a partner?

    Google Developer Account issue

I just logged in Google Play Console after a long time and get this notification. Does that mean my account was deactivated?

What's crash-free rate of your Android app in the last 30 days?

    Posted: 16 Apr 2021 07:15 AM PDT

What's crash-free rate of your Android app in the last 30 days?

I work for a company which has an ecommerce app with more than 3.7+ million active devices.

However, in this year, we have an OKR to have crash-free rate is > 99.75% during 30 days (statistics via Crashlytics).

For now it's 97.86%. Thus, I wonder what's the crash-free rate in your app during 30 days?

For the last several months I've been developing mobile app for Taiga (this is tool which helps you to manage your work in agile way). App is made using modern technologies and approaches like Jetpack Compose, MVVM pattern, Clean Architecture etc. And I've just released first stable version.
You can find project on GitHub and download app on Google Play. Any feedback would be highly appreciated.

What do you do when your projects are building and you have a a couple dozen seconds to kill?

    Posted: 16 Apr 2021 08:06 AM PDT

For me, staring at the screen is since the time wasting trauma kicks in. But if I engage in other activities, i will be back 2 times late to the completed error report or success message.

Feel free to share how you cope up with these spans of time in your life.

    Thanks in advance!

    Lost Files (Photos)

    Posted: 16 Apr 2021 07:57 AM PDT

I have the Galaxy S8 and I upgraded to the S21 Ultra. I thought I successfully transfer all my photos from S8 to S21, so I deleted the DCIM folder from my S8 files. I cancel the process when I realize the photos weren't transfer, but it was still too late as majority of the pictures had already deleted. I did not have these photos backed up, nor save on any clouds or SD card. Any suggestion on how I can recover the delete photos or the files? I don't care if it's bad quality.

I tried disk digger. I got some pictures back, but I notice it was mainly pictures I had through other apps like email, whatsapp, etc..

Is using Google IAP for digital goods optional ?

    Posted: 16 Apr 2021 07:49 AM PDT

    https://imgur.com/a/GUBh8Ff

Not just this, even Netflix. Doesn't google restricts you to use just Google IAP for digital goods ?

Does that rule only applies to Individual developers ?

I published app in 2019 and didn't update later. Time passed, now I wan't to completely redesign my app in new technology. Problem is, I lost all my information for signing apk. I only have access to play console. Can I update that app or do I need to publish another app with same name and delete old one?

Can't seem to start my Android Emulator

    Posted: 16 Apr 2021 02:10 AM PDT

I followed the steps to a React Native tutorial by Mosh Hamedani.

I installed Android Studio and the necessary packages that you need to start the emulator. I configured the exact same Pixel 3a and for some reason the emulator is stuck on the loading screen with a 'Not Responding' message.

I've tried other phones and various OS images and it doesn't seem to solve the problem. I've even changed the emulated performance option from automatic to hardware.

I have 16GB RAM so I'm really confused. Has anyone encountered this problem and could help me out? Thanks!

Anyone else who had no experience with declarative UI and is having a bad time trying to "get" Compose?

    Posted: 15 Apr 2021 04:56 PM PDT

Since high school and even during my computer science degree and even on my internship, all we ever did is the old style UI (is that called imperative)? Visual Basic/Studio, Android XML, etc.

I feel like the current guides for Compose are not that beginner friendly and somehow expects you to already know a few things about declarative UI.

Is there a guide, or maybe can someone create one that is very simple and goes through all steps? I think the one I don't undestand the most is navigation. (I use Jetpack Navigation for my current non Compose app).

Is legal to show Facebook or Google data?

    Posted: 15 Apr 2021 08:13 PM PDT

I have a social login in my app via Facebook and Google. Once the user is loged in, I have access to their name, email and picture.

Now I would like to do a ranking of my users, and I would like to know if I am allowed to show the name and the picture of the person to everybody. I see in multiple apps that they use the picture, but normally they don't show names, forcing the user to select a nickname.

    Thanks in advance.

Have I made a mistake getting into Android Dev?

    Posted: 16 Apr 2021 01:51 AM PDT

I and two of my friends have pooled in our savings to start a company making apps for Android. However, the more I read about the Play store nightmares and the more I talk to developers who are already in this industry I feel like I have made a massive mistake. And whatever we do, we'll always be one step away from being ruined thanks to Google's AI bots, non-existent Play store support or some Chinese company ripping off our work or Adsense fiascos or something else. I'm feeling really paranoid.

My friends are going to be using the money to order phones and PCs and other equipment very soon. I'd really like to know if it's worth getting into this field so we can pull out before we lose all of it.

I hope this post is not against the rules, mods please let me know if it is and I'll remove it.

    Proguard rules for testing

    Posted: 16 Apr 2021 01:39 AM PDT

I just spent a bit more time than I hoped for, getting my proguard rules in shape for testing my obfuscated apk (on emulator / real device).

Some of the rules were just the interface between the unit test and the app classes, and it strikes me that those rules should be possible to generate automatically (by inspecting the code). Does anyone know of such a plugin / helper?

    Learning Partner

    Posted: 15 Apr 2021 02:31 PM PDT

Hello! I am currently at a very very basic level of learning Kotlin with no previous coding experience other than very basic Java. I really really like programming but having a partner woud be very nice for me as it would motivate me and we could learn together. We could help each other out in our problems and make small starter applications together. I am currently 16 and super new to coding so i would prefer that my partner would be similar in age and experience but it's not a requirement. I would be extremely grateful and thankful if you decide to learn with me. Thanks for reading!

Having troubles with SVG library -- recommend me a new one?

    Posted: 15 Apr 2021 11:00 PM PDT

I am currently using GlideToVectorYou library to download SVG from our server.
Our database contains links to SVG files, which are conditionally rendered and links may be changed in the futre.
We have a series of 5 SVGs, and for some reason only the 1st and the 5th will load on some mobiles. iOS works fine.

The current library GlideToVectorYou does not give any error information.

Any insights as to why or alternative suggestions? I can't see any obvious errors in the SVG files that may cause it to fail.

Best no code app builder for delivery

    Posted: 15 Apr 2021 07:08 PM PDT

    Hello guys,

I stuck and I need your help. I want to build a delivery app with no code app builders. I found Appypie and Tookan. Are there any more platforms such as those.

They don't have flexibility to modify the app. They just offer the feature, I like to apply my modifications in the app function.

    Thanks

Google Play Console - Submission times

    Posted: 15 Apr 2021 06:03 PM PDT

    Hello everyone!

I'm new to Android development and going pretty well.

A bit of background: I've developed a messaging client, as well as another app for public transportation use. I've submitted them both to the Play Console for Closed Testing. Both apps have been, at the time of posting, in "pending publication" for 3+ days.

I understand coronavirus may have had an impact on this, so I ask does anyone else who's submitted a new app to the Play Store have an estimated timeframe?

    Thanks in advance 😊

How is the built-in default browser function/feature called ?

    Posted: 15 Apr 2021 05:27 PM PDT

On Android, when you open a link in the reddit or discord app, it opens a "mini" version of your default browser that has a back button that returns you to your app immediately.

How is that web browser function called, that gets used by apps ?

I'm not a dev, i would just like to know the name of this to recommend for a project, that could have this function built in, currently it opens a default browser app externally, which you then have to close with the opened tab and return to the main app.
