How do you deal with Android 10+ Media Store & Scoped Storage mess?

    Posted: 18 Apr 2021 04:48 AM PDT

Google wants Android to be more iOS-ish, but they failed so hard with execution that they were even delaying enforcement of it on Android 11 so far.

Anyway in few days we will have comply, even tho at least I struggle mostly with 2 issues:

    1. 'File browse' feature. Previously you could show file browser and allow user to pick up file from anywhere, now pretty much only option to let user chose something with file-picker flow is using SAF, that is buggy and users don't even know how to use it (for example they see only 'Downloads' folder and don't know that they can click 'show internal storage' etc). Do we have any alternative here?
    2. Media Store bugs - for example this. More than a year passed and still no solution. I got many negative reviews because users can't add stuff from sdcard to playlists after updating to Android 10, or can't acces sd card resources at all (is sd dead for android?). I see some music players for example offer option to make Android/OS playlist and internal playlist, but it's a bit crappy design that user has to choose something from radio button and most of the time they don't understand what's going on (for example choose if you want Android bugs or loose ability to share your playlists with other apps). Do you have a better idea how to handle this?

I'm kinda getting annoyed at google and think `If you give low quality APIs, I'll give you low quality apps, why would I care more about users than OS maker care. I'll just make better apps for iOS then ;)`. So do you have any good ideas to get around these issues or it's the best to just ignore them?

2021 MVP vs MVVM for novice

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 08:20 PM PDT

we're learning mvp in c# .net, and it's confusing for me, lotsa presenters/interfaces for each view and usercontrol, disposing, recreating, unity etc...

well i havent applied mvvm/mvp yet till now... only bloated activities

since tech improved a lot, should i go with MVP or MVVM? what if it's a simple proj, a big proj?

what are the pros / cons?

    thanks all!

how does each of them deal with screen rotation?

Target API level 30 requirement by August - question

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 09:10 PM PDT

    Hi guys,

I'm looking to up the target api level from 29 to 30 for all of my apps ahead of the August 2021 deadline.

This may be a silly question, but I don't know the answer myself so I'll just go ahead and ask it...looking at this page (https://developer.android.com/studio/releases/build-tools) it seems there is no current stable release for build tools version 30.

I was always under the impression that your target api level and build tools version should match.
    Is this not the case?

I'm wondering if I should be:

    - waiting for a stable build tool release for version 30 before upgrading

    - using the unfinished RC build for version 30 and upgrade

    - updating my target api level to 30 while still using build tools 29

How do you create Adaptive Icons with more than one vector/asset?

    Posted: 18 Apr 2021 05:25 AM PDT

E.g. You want to show a settings icon next to a phone icon

Can't find anything regarding this, also in combination with creating a shadow for such an icon. All Online Tools generate Legacy icons.

Templates for making Android applications in kivy-python?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 07:51 PM PDT

Hey, so Like most of today's social m dia apps UI consist the same 'card' and scroll base. Like Quora, Reddit, stack exchange, Facebook, insta,..etc. literally many. So, is there any simple framework out there for this niche? I want to make my own app similar to them. I just want to link my databases to this UI and do some custom designs. Ideally, I want this template to be in python -kivy so it is easy to interact and build upon.

Am i allowed to name my app widgetsmith or widgy?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 11:53 PM PDT

The names widgetsmith and widgy are popular widget apps in ios, for my widget app, can i name mine widgetsmith widgets for kwgt, for example, the name widgetsmith is trademarked however, widgy , i am not sure. I am asking due to app impersonation policy, does that apply to ios app names as well?

74 days passed and AdMob still limited the ad serving in my account, what should I do?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 12:05 PM PDT

Ads are the only way that I can monetize from my apps since IAP is not supported in my country, I've worked with AdMob since 2017.

Since that time, I didn't face any issue with it till 18 June 2020, AdMob sent me a message telling me that the Ad serving in my account has been limited due to invalid traffic concerns.

After 66 days (23 August 2020) the issue gets resolved automatically, I didn't change anything, I'd thought that the end of this issue and AdMob will never place this issue in my account once again.

Unfortunately, the problem has come and gone many times, but the last one I got on 02/02/2021, and it's still present till now.

After reading this https://support.google.com/admob/answer/2936217?hl=en, I've made some changes to all of my apps :

    • The ad is only requested if 60 seconds have passed since the previous ad appeared.
    • The banner ads disappear as long as the user clicks on them or closes them.
    • My personal device is registered in AdMob as a test device.
    • I always use the ads test unit.
    • I've implemented a way to prevent the AVD emulator and Firebase Test lab emulator devices

I've implemented these changes on 6 April, so it's 10 days passed since then, but the issue still present, what should I do?

Should I need to remove all ad units and create a new one?

App icon won't update in Andriod Studio

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 05:41 PM PDT

When I go to update my app icon it will update everything in the mipmap folder, but nothing in the drawable folder like the ic_launcher_background.xml or ic_launcher_foreground.xml. Not even stock clipart or text will update. It just keeps creating new folders when I click finish in image asset.

This is also causing the icon to not update on my device.

    Little question about ROOM

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 05:17 PM PDT

    Hey everyone,

I tried to write a query that return true if a Tutor with the given UUID exist in the local DB,

here is my querry on TutorDAO :

     @Query("SELECT EXISTS(SELECT * FROM Tutor WHERE uuid=:uuid)") boolean exists(String uuid);

    And on TutorRepository :

     public boolean exists(String uuid){ return tutorDAO.exists(uuid); }

But when I use that method I always get a java.lang.NullPointerException : Attempt to invoke virtual method '....' on a null object reference

Anyone know what I'm doing wrong, and how to fix this, or any other idea to verify if a tutor exists by searching with a uuid ?

Another shout of frustration from the Google apps review process

Another shout of frustration from the Google apps review process

It just amazes me every time how bad Google Play Store/Developer/Console/Review experience is.

My app is on the store (no name to avoid the promotion ban).

The last version has been approved 2 weeks ago. All is good.

3 days ago I have submitted a modified Store description to improve my listing. It is just the text change. No app was attached. A couple of minutes ago I have received an email that my app (!) is not approved because my subscription description is not clear enough.

Don't they check the app has not changed? It is just bloody text that has been modified. I have added 20 words to boost my ranking.

It looks like it is going to be my last Android app. I am so fed with this.

    The email I have received:

Issue with your appYour app does not comply with the Subscriptions policy:

    • Your offer does not clearly and accurately describe the terms of your subscription, including the cost, frequency of billing cycle, and whether a subscription is required to use the app.
    • Your offer does not clearly and accurately describe the terms of your trial offer or introductory pricing, including when a free trial will convert to a paid subscription, how much the paid subscription will cost, and that a user can cancel if they do not want to convert to a paid subscription.

    The screen they sent me

    Tracking data with Accessibility Service

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 04:25 PM PDT

I'm trying to create an Child Monitoring application that can read Messenger/WhatsApp chats displayed on the screen. Though I'm able to fetch messages from notifications, I cannot retrieve messages while being on chat screen because with every WINDOW_CONTENT_CHANGED event, the views just repeat and the messages are repeated as well.

I've seen that some applications are able to do it especially this Child Monitoring Application but I can't find a proper solution for it.

Any help would be appreciated, Thanks!

Why does my project structure look different than everyone else's in Android Studio?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 10:27 AM PDT

Some key differences I notice that make things really difficult when working on new projects are how the gradle files are laid out. For example:

    plugins { id 'com.android.application' id 'kotlin-android' }

    Instead of:

apply plugin: 'com.android.application' apply plugin: 'kotlin-android'

As well as my resource folder having two different "Themes" folders but not a "Styles" XML, unlike every other project I've seen. I'm not sure why Android Studio is doing this. It's never a big deal when I'm building small projects, but when I have to work on something big I'm forced to remove and rewrite more files than it's worth.

Has anyone experienced this, and how did you fix it?

    Web scraping in real time

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 12:05 PM PDT

Hey guys i was creating an app in Android with Java. And I want pull some info from an Advertisement site every 5 seconds. (Pull ads and check for new ones, if there are some new ads, the app would notify the user).

First I thought to implement this functionality with WorkManager class and its PeriodicWorkRequest class, then i realize that PeriodicWorkRequest's least interval is 15 minutes.

I my question, what do You suggest if I want to run this task in background every 5 seconds or so.
