Coworker’s phone was being monitored/hacked, got a new one and the same thing is happening

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 07:54 AM PDT

Prefacing with I know absolutely nothing about android.

Coworker has been talking to me the past few weeks about her phone being hijacked/hacked/mirrored. I thought she was a bit crazy at first, and maybe she's doing things and forgetting like turning on WiFi, Bluetooth, and other normal settings. I looked through it and didn't see anything out of the ordinary. But she kept insisting. Then she showed me her chrome search history, and there were searches on her account from times she was asleep, or for stuff she would have absolutely no idea what they are, like searches for stack overflow programming. Kept getting some notifications or emails that games were being purchased. She kept saying her tv/roku was being controlled and YouTube videos were playing on the phone and tv without her knowledge. Kept seeing the camera and microphone active. Even had a new email address with a slight variation to her original added to her gmail app. I told her to reset the phone, she went to her carrier and they did it for her.

Couple days later it kept happening. So she went back and got an entirely new phone, cut service to the old number, made a new gmail account. Cut off her home Internet. Told me about it. She asked me to come take a look at her tv and phones. I checked out the old phone, which was reset. Checked the tv settings for changes in the internet connection and didn't see anything. Everything looked normal. Then she told me all this started happening after breaking up with a boyfriend recently. Said she'd go on his phone and see her phone on his, her emails on his. Told me he'd always be messing around with electronics at her house, like going behind the tv. I checked for any suspicious cables but didn't see anything

Then she came to me this morning saying it happened again with the new phone. She got locked out of her new gmail account. Kept getting notifications for game purchases, camera and mic activating. Settings turning themselves on and not being able to be turned off. Kept getting texts from a blocked number saying "it's not me", and "hope your phone is better now". Saw somewhere that her phone model was changed to something different. Claims to have seen a mouse cursor on the phone. I asked her if she reused a password for the new gmail account, which she said no. The handle and password were both very unique and no one knew about its existence except me. When I was at her house, I asked her to say her email and password out loud, so I'm wondering if her house is physically bugged. But how can they continue to gain access to the phone itself?

I'm unsure of how to help her and I know it's really upsetting her. I truly believe though it's stemming from her phone and I just don't know what it could be, because I'm largely ignorant as to what software and hardware can be used to spy/hack android phones, as I've always used iPhones.

On mobile and at work, so sorry if thoughts aren't gathered properly. If anyone has any idea what could be going on, please share with me so I can try to help her out. If any additional information is needed, please ask and I'll try to get an answer or be more concise

Edit: there was also mention of an "emulated" folder on her phone that had suspicious stuff (pictures of her phone iirc). When I went over to her house, she handed me a stack of papers she printed off about android security and hacking that she's been researching to the best of her ability.

Will Android apps with storage permission be able to access any file in the phone?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 11:14 AM PDT

If an Android application with storage permission gets access to all files in the phone, it seems like a privacy issue to me.

Many Android applications are requesting for storage access permission.

Is the One Plus 7t a good phone to buy unlocked, in terms of longevity?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 01:50 AM PDT

I know I can look up the specs of the phone, and I have. I don't have enough broad knowledge of the topic of cell phone hardware and the atmosphere surrounding different brands, and parts, and updates and so forth to be able to gauge the longevity of a phone.

I've been looking at a lot of different phones, I can't afford the top level flagships, but the 7t has caught my eye. I think it's less than a year old, or maybe just right on a year old.

Does anyone have any thoughts as to its longevity? Will this thing be usable in three or four years, that sort of thing?

How this new GSI Custom ROMs & Treble work?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 09:15 AM PDT

Apologies if the question is dumb in anyway, but please help me out here.

Here is my understanding so far. Device specific binaries are placed in /vendor ( Is it? ). System image of Android or Custom ROM is placed in /System.

So /vendor has Kernel? Or is it /boot as before? I'm kinda lost. So if I flash a Custom Recovery like TWRP and Format the System, then flash System.img of some Custom ROM, will it work flawlessly? Are there going to be bugs? Then what happens to Kernel? How do you fix bugs for that specific device? Also Treble compatible phones only need GSI or do you have to compile the entire Android Source of that custom ROM and rebuild GSI? Or work on existing GSI.img?

I'm trying to understand Android's working but I can't understand it. Any help from a Custom ROM developer with a Treble compatible device or someone with an idea of how they work, Help me out this little one.

Google Assistant Screen Call Went Away?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 12:19 PM PDT

Hi! Today I noticed that Google's "screen call" feature disappeared from my phone. To be honest, I'm not sure exactly what the program was that I used, I just know it was automatically on with my Moto G7. I know it was first rolled out onto Pixel phones.

Anyway, I absolutely loved it. I could use it to screen all my robo calls and numbers I didn't know. Did any one else lose their service or know how to get it back? I've tried so many different things within settings, but it seems like I don't have that option whatsoever.

can you trick Store to reinstall an app without removing it first?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 12:18 PM PDT

is there a way (without root) to trick the Store into thinking an app is not installed while in fact is still present and working fine so that i can reinstall it? (without removing the installed files)

something like the "repair" feature of windows apps installers.

Help differentiate Android Phone brands/Which to choose

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 12:13 PM PDT

Hello everyone. Been a lifetime iPhone user and I had an android a while back, but I barely remember the experience on it as I was much younger. I'm in the USA, California

    • Why I want to change: Long story short, I'm looking for a new phone as it's getting to be about time to upgrade and quite honestly, as nice as iPhone may be or as "smooth" as it may feel, it honestly ain't it for me. Any time I want to get certain things, such as modded/tweaked apps, emulators, file management or a wide range of apps that are available for android only from certain things I enjoy, I tend to have to jailbreak ALWAYS in order to get any of this. That or I can get a limited amount of these things through paid services, that is if their apps don't get revoked and taken down...

    • Budget: I don't really have a budget as I've always been on the iPhone upgrade program and it's basically a 12 month thing and then you upgrade, or 24 months for it to finish and just have the phone permanently. As such, I don't really have a budget.

    • What I'm looking for: For me, I know quite well about what android can do, and the features I'm looking for as opposed to iPhone, but my issue is what brand. Like honestly there's so many damn android based phones that I don't know what to get. There's google, Samsung, Asus, LG, etc... I'm looking for a good phone, nothing with a price range to be fair, but I'd say something on the higher end that can in a way handle it's work and really be used, as I tend to use my phone for a lot of things. I quite honestly don't know which of the brands that run android are the "top notch" or high end/quality brands so wanted to see if y'all recommended anything. Thanks!

I can use a different number other than my own with Google voice? Just d/l it, set it up and I'm good to go?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 12:12 PM PDT

I used it a while back but I forgot everything about it and I only used the number like once or twice. I think the thing went inactive since I haven't used it in a while.

Phone was hacked(???) Need help please

    Posted: 20 Sep 2020 10:02 PM PDT

My OPPO F11 (company phone) screen turned blood red and started opening apps without me controlling it. It opened the QCY app (which I'm using for bluetooth earphones) turning phone language to Chinese. It was doing so many things without my control (like opening documents and apps) and I'm afraid my privacy/data has been breached. I'm thinking the phone was hacked.

My coworker and I found a hard time turning it off as it is cancelling my actions but I eventually turned the phone off. After restarting the red tint was gone and my phone was back again. I uninstalled the QCY app.

What do you think? Need help and advice what to do. Much appreciated thanks.

Is there any app available on android to view extremely high resolution images?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 11:46 AM PDT

So I just downloaded this image- https://hubblesite.org/image/4492/news The full 650 megapixel png. And when I zoom in Google photos, it looks blocky and pixelated. So I was wondering if there was any app which I could use to see the image in its full resolution.

Gallery disappeared after Andoid update (Pixel 3a)

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 11:24 AM PDT

I used to have the icon for accessing my photos and videos in my home screen. My phone, Google Pixel 3a, just updated to Android 11 and now that icon is gone. I can access my photos that are saved to Google Photos from the camera app or by tapping the Google Photos icon but how I can see the photos that are saved in the phone's own memory?

It looks like tha Gallery is completely gone, I can't find it anywhere. Is there a way to fi this and get the icon back?

Want to Root Samsung Galaxy S5 Active

    Posted: 20 Sep 2020 08:27 PM PDT

Hello: I have an older Samsung Galaxy S5 Active that has lots of AT&T bloatware that I'd love to get rid of. The phone is awesome and still serves it's purpose so I can't justify getting a newer one. It's running Android 6 Marshmallow. Since that version is not producing anymore security updates, I'd just love to Root it and dump all the unwanted AT&T stuff.

Anyone know how I can do this? I have ZERO knowledge for something like this so please be gentle. :-)

    Thanks

My phones Location services keeps turning itself on every night, anyone have any clue why that might be?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 09:56 AM PDT

my phones locations service has been turning on automatically for the last couple of nights and I can't think of any reason why it would be.

I've disabled every app that uses location from using location services but it still turns itself back on at night or after a phone restart.

I use a samsung A20 with stock android 10, I have been planning on switching the OS but because they're third party and aren't as updated Ive been putting it off, I use the play store abit and don't trust APK sites.

Any ideas on what I can do about this problem?

I hate having my location service on and always keep it off if I can help it.

Can not go from 11 beta to 10 . Tried everything, i think - help

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 09:37 AM PDT

    I need help.

I have problem with my Pixel 3 camera (focusing issues, many people have it/had it). Contacted Google help but they couldn't help because I am on beta. They asked to get in contact when I go back to android 10. I've been trying to opt-out for the last 4 days but wouldn't receive OTA. I tried the in and out a number of time, waited few days, switched phone on off, used VPN to different countries etc. nothing worked. Not comfortable with downgrading manually, and advice? Just to be clear, I am NOT asking for when I will get an update!

[Android 11] Issues with music media storage

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 09:22 AM PDT

    I have a Pixel 3 running Android 11.

Ever since updating, my phone storage has been acting crazy in regards to my music stored on the phone.

I cannot physically delete ANY music files, and I've tried several methods, including the two standard files apps, autodeleting from Musicbee during sync, doing it in windows explorer, and directly from Poweramp. Literally nothing is working.

I've reset my phone twice and the issue is still happening. The only way to get the programs to stop trying to delete is to restart the phone, because it will otherwise just work non-stop without getting anything done.

This issue did not happen before the Android 11 update. Does anyone have any clue how to fix this?

iPhone style "Optimized battery charging" for Android (non Root)?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 08:56 AM PDT

So I am switching for the first time since Android 1.4 to a Stock OS with no root with a Note 20 Ultra, but the biggest feature that I will be missing from Rooted devices is a charge controller.

In my hunt for it, I've come up dry, but have found that Apple is doing it to conserve battery, I was wondering if Samsung, or any other makers are doing it, or are going to do it.

Keeping my OP6 between 20% and 80% has GREATLY increased the lifespan of the battery. When I need a full full day, I pump it to 100, it may of had under 20 full charges in it's lifetime and it still holds it's charge nearly as good as when I got it a few years back.

Doubt there is something, but I'm hoping I'm wrong!

Can I disable all Google app permissions?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 07:33 AM PDT

I don't like to have anything running in the background that I'm not using passively or actively, like the Google app or Google assistant. As Android doesn't let me uninstall or disable them apart of google notifications, I decided to remove all of its permissions (like the microphone as I don't like the fact it's always "hearing", waiting for an "Ok Google" voice input).

The point is that when I attempt to remove a permission, it warns me about losing "basic/essential" functions of my Android device. For example, if I remove "calls" permissions, it warns me about losing calling functionalities.

Is this true or just a common warning present in most of Google apps? As far as I know, this permissions only affects the Google app itself, but I'm not sure at all.

Thanks for taking your time to read this!

Why do phone camera lenses have such a wide fov?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 07:20 AM PDT

Just today, I saw a squirrel nibbling on a fruit in the morning and since I couldn't scare him off by going too close, I clicked a photo from a reasonable distance and he was barely present in the photo until I zoomed to 3x or above. Basically, capturing good animal photos is really hard without a good 5x telephoto lens.

This is why I am always surprised when phone reviewers question how often we use a 10x zoom. EVERYTIME, is the answer but they are completely oblivious to that for some reason. 50x zoom is seen as a gimmick but isn't it subject to how often you want a small fov?

To add to that, phone manufacturers always seem to prioritise including a wide angle lens over including a good telephoto lens. I was so happy when Realme X3 Superzoom was announced with a 5x zoom at a budget price but sadly that phone never got any coverage or atte tion anywhere. I hope more phone manufacturers include a good zoom lens in their phones.

I hate Windows, so I installed Linux on my PC. I hate stock Android, how do I do that to my phone?

    Posted: 20 Sep 2020 12:32 PM PDT

I'm concerned about privacy. I'm concerned about not being able to uninstall apps like chrome. I'm concerned about my phone owning me, and not the other way around.

I have a xiaomi phone, and I want it to be mine. I want to uninstall whatever app I want and replace it with whatever I want, I want my phone not to turn on by itself sometimes and I want it not to send some random server my current location and what I'm looking at on my screen. What do I do? I've had pcs for decades, I can install linux on them just fine and tame the beast, but this phone thing is new!

I think you get what I'm trying to convey. Can you help me?
