Is it possible to get actual stock android on a phone?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 10:26 AM PDT

Hello, I have a Samsung phone and I would like to remove the One UI and get to the stock android. One UI just pisses me off sometimes because it lacks stock android apps such as the download manager. I would also like to remove bloatware like Facebook and LinkedIn. I can't find anything useful on google except for launchers but that's not what I want. Is there maybe the official android ROM that I can download?

My android tablet is locked using surelock and i want to unlock it.

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 02:47 AM PDT

    Long story short:-

My device is locked usnig "surelock" so i don't have access to anything on it. I want to remove it and put any OS which will let me use my tab in normal way. I don't want any data from my tab, i just want it to function like a normal tablet. Due to this lock i almost can't do anything on my tablet. I am stuck only on one screen.

    ABOUT DEVICE:-

    TABLET - Lenovo Tab 4 10 TB-X304L

I don't know the android version but it was manufactured in 2018. and is now out of warranty.

WHAT I HAVE DONE TILL NOW

    1. Tried Hard Reset:-

Ofcourse i tried doing a hard reset on it but in fastboot mode it didn't had any hard reset option. (since images are not allowed i will type what it showed to me)

    FASTBOOT MODE

    PRODUCT_NAME -

    VARIANT - QRD eMMC

    BOOTLOADER VERSION-

    BASEBAND NUMBER-

    SECUREBOOT - enabled

    DEVICE STATE - locked

now when i went in recovery mode it showed

    REBOOT SYSTEM NOW

    REBOOT TO BOOTLOADER

    APPLY UPDATE FROM ADB

    APPLY UPDATE FROM SD CARD

    MOUNT/SYSTEM

    VIEW RECOVERY LOGS

    RUN GRAPHICS TEST

    POWER OFF

    1. Now since there is no hard reset so i tried to update the firmware using adb. After a lot of work i was able to find the firmware file for my tablet (still not sure if it is perfect for my tablet) other sites claimed to have it but asked for money.

Ok then i tried to flash the device it with the firmware using both adb and sd card but it showed this error in tablet. This error came while using sd card

    E:footer is wrong

    E: signature verification failed

    E: error: 21

    Installation aborted

While using adb from pc it detected the sideload but it showed this error

    Total xfer: 0.00x

and Installation Aborted was showed in tablet.

    FINALLY

I am finally posting it here to know what possible solutions are left for me. This tablet is quite expensive for me so i want to make it work badly. Please help if you can. I am okay with any operation system.

    Samsung S7 vs 2020

    Posted: 12 Aug 2020 10:01 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I think it is time to replace my Samsung S7 (32gb) with a new shiny, however I don't want to break the bank in the process.

Any advice on what phones are available today that will be a decent upgrade? Are budget or mid range phones these days better/comparable in specs?

Preferably 128gb (and SD slot as a bonus), faster/better performance (for games), decent battery life, not too fussy about camera though.

    Thanks in advance

Good value USB Type C cables for Moto G6 Android phone? Does it matter what type?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 04:13 AM PDT

    Hey all,

I'm looking on Amazon UK but can't decide which cables to get to charge my phone.

Does it matter what type I get? Cheap or expensive?

I quite like the look of these ones which are £3.99 for a 6.6ft and a 3.3 ft cable:

    USB Type C Cable(2 Pack), CHOE [3.3ft & 6.6ft]USB C 2.0 to USB A Cable for Galaxy S9/ S9 Plus, Note 8, Nokia 8, S8/ S8 Plus, LG V30/G6/G5, Nexus 6p/ 5x, Lumia 950xl/950, OnePlus 3 and More

    by CHOETECH

But there are a couple of negative reviews saying the plugs melted! But lots of positive reviews, too.

The Anker ones are twice the price but I do like their powerbanks and speakers.

    Is it worth spending more?

Also, what's the deal with the nylon cables? I don't like the sound of that!

    Any advice?

I'm wondering which app has this logo as a notification?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 09:00 AM PDT

Unfortunately, I only have a crude drawing from memory for reference lol, but if anybody knows which app notifies you with a logo of this description:

    https://ibb.co/vxbMVT2

Greyish/white colour, what looks like a 'u' with an arrow in the top left, and a circle around it (the right part of the circle connects to the u) that's broken into two parts.

EDIT: In case it may be a specific phone's system notification, I'll mention that this is on a Samsung.

Hello why does whatsapp drastically reduce video and image quality sent through chat, I've tested all scenarios and as soon as an image gets sent through chat the quality is always reduced, why is this ? Poor android optimization? Or is this the same on IOS and just a WhatsApp thing ?

Question: What does Google plan to do with "display over other apps" (AKA "SAW") permission?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 12:06 PM PDT

I've read in the past that Google plans to remove SAW ("system alert window" AKA "display over other apps") permission completely, and might even replace it with the (annoying) Bubbles:

This was for Android 10 (Q), but, as time goes by, I can see them both, yet noticed a few changes:

    • The main video of this presentation of "what's new on Android" was removed. Not sure if the presentation is still available, and where (don't even remember its exact name). The relevant part of it was on the image here (source here).
    • There is an alternative video of Google, which says that Bubbles are supposed to replace SAW permission, but only as an alternative (didn't say it's a full replacement).
    • However, another video is more decisive though, saying that SAW "will be fully deprecated".
    • SAW permission isn't available on Android Go starting from Android 10 "because drawing overlay windows uses excessive memory" , and so I suggested to bring it back when there is enough RAM, because it was rumored recently that those with less than 2GB will be considered as Android Go, and so a device with near 2GB RAM should be able to handle it fine.
    • Seems it's now hidden when Settings app is focused, and not just when permissions dialog is shown, making it less useful for apps that are supposed to help with the settings, and maybe remote-control apps. You can still allow it, but for some reason via developer-options
    • It has become so annoying to grant it on Android 11 (shows a list of apps), that it's actually easier to grant it from the app-info screen...

Seeing that so many apps depend on it, sometimes as a core functionality, I don't understand what is Google's plan about it.

Can anyone share from its own knowledge and opinion, of what will happen with it?

Will Google get rid of it as it said? Why was the main video removed? Perhaps Google changed its mind, as it kinda did for storage permission?

Is it safe for developer to keep creating apps that use this permission?

    What do you guys think?

New Android Phone shows ads when unlocking

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 11:19 AM PDT

    Hi,

I recently bought a Moto G7 Power smart phone through my carrier.

I am coming from an iPhone so I'm not really familiar with the settings.

I installed a few apps, like the New York Times, a pedometer, and a podcast player.

It seems ever since I got the phone, I get pop-up ads when unlocking the phone and sometimes when I am using it.

Here is one example : Phone Ad

I went through my apps and deleted stuff I don't use.

I also deleted all my history, cache, and downloads from Chrome.

But these ads still pop up.

Is there a cleaner I need to install or some setting I need to check?

Or a way to get rid of these once and for all?

    Thanks!

Is there a way to whitelist a specific app for "Hide Sensitive Notifications" setting on the lock screen?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 04:41 AM PDT

I use the "Hide Sensitive Content" setting for my notifications, but there is a specific app that I'd like to be shown the full content on the lock screen (Microsoft Outlook). I still want my other app notifications' contents to be hidden, just want to be able to quickly check notifications from this secondary email address.

Currently running stock Android 9 on the Motorola Moto G6. Root is enabled if needed.

    S20+ Help

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 10:27 AM PDT

    Hey everyone,

I upgraded to the S20+ from an S8 and have a few questions:

    1) Notifications on the lock screen are translucent, is there a way that I can make them solid?

    2) I used to be able to open the lock screen of my phone by pressing the area where the home button is. Is this no longer an option?

    3) I CANNOT figure out how to silence/mute Instagram notifications. I like to have the push notifications silently appear, but I cannot seem to mute the alert and have been waking up to loud alerts. I know how to do this with every other app (either in-app or through Settings - Apps - (selected app) - Notifications. The options seem to be limited for Instagram.

    I really appreciate the help.

Weird number voicemail, can I be hacked?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 10:25 AM PDT

So, i'm using an Honor and I got a notification that someone left a voice mail. Now, I never get voicemails so I was surprised and I looked on google how I could access them to listen, and found out I had to press "1" on the dialler for about 2 seconds. I called them but immediately hung up cause I got a little bit creeped out. Could I be hacked by this? I'm scared and don't know what to do...

People who don't use cases on their phones, hows you camera bump looking?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 09:45 AM PDT

I've been using a case on my phone ever since glass backs became a thing. Recently, the camera bumps have gotten gigantic on phones. I'm wondering if theres a case for a phone that doesnt protect the camera bump, is it just useless to use it and might as well go no case cause the camera would be destroyed nonetheless.

Moto g8 power - wallpaper setting issue

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 09:41 AM PDT

    Hi,

    Moto g8 power all updated.

When setting a wallpaper, it springs up with a bounding box for me to crop the wallpaper to my liking before applying. Problem is, it's always a square! So when you apply, the wallpaper is really Zoomed in and pixelated.

It seems if I disable google photos I lose the ability to set a wallpaper at all so I feel like it's somewhat linked to that app. Is there a better, free gallery app?

    Thanks

    Widgets don't work

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 09:11 AM PDT

Hello, I'm running android 10.1.0.142 with a huawei p30, but this problem started last update. When I """chose""" to update my phone, all of my apps were out of order, reduced to the default home screen, and my calendar widget disappeared as well.

Now, any time I try to add a widget by holding down on an empty space, nothing happens. It's very difficult to stay organized without it, and even 3rd party apps require you to be able to use that function, so I'm not sure what to do. Thanks for your time.

Any way to login into Chrome if I don't have gapps installed?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 08:58 AM PDT

I have an old tablet that I just recently updated the ROM on, doing a clean flash. I didn't install gapps because it seems to run significantly faster when it doesn't have the Google services running in background. The problem is that I run Chrome on my phone - which does have the framework installed - and would like to run it on the tablet as well. I installed it via the Aurora store and it runs, but I can't log into my account and sync my user data; if I click the relevant option it just does nothing. This is a problem because I can't access the bookmarks I've saved on the phone and computer.

I have microG installed for Youtube Vanced and that lets me log into my account there; I was hoping it'd work for Chrome as well, but apparently not. Is there something similar I can run?

All I'm interested are the bookmarks, so if all else fails an outboard app that can handle those on its own would suffice.

Screen’s backlight turns on when plugging-in the tablet for charging: new since update from Android 9 to Android 10

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 08:55 AM PDT

A few days after doing the big update on my Galaxy Tab A (SM-T590), I noticed that the screen's backlight turned on at the same time as the device emits the beep to confirm the start of charging. I saw it because I was standing above it and to the side; from the front, I probably wouldn't have noticed it (except maybe at night, with all the lights turned off in the room), because the screen remains blank. In any case, I'm sure it didn't do that with Android 9.

So now, each time I place the tablet in the Pogo Dock, I have to remember to press the power button to wake the device and then press it again to turn the screen off. Otherwise, the backlight will stay on indefinitely. (It is not affected by the display timeout setting nor the "Stay awake" option.)

Would this bug be more likely to be caused by something in Android itself, or by some Samsung addition?

What apps does google go through to push ads your way ? Drive ? Chrome ? Notes ?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 04:36 AM PDT

So i'm new to Android and was just wondering. Does Google comb through your Google Drive, Gmail, Keep Notes, Photos app to push you ads ? Or is just things like Chrome and Google searches ?

Obviously there is a lot of speculation of them going through apps like Gmail but what are they up front about ? What will they admit to ? Chrome ?

    Thank you.

GIFs received as pictures instead of GIFs [google messages]

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 08:08 AM PDT

Edit: to clarify, if I am sent a GIF instead of it coming in as that format and animated it comes in as a jpeg and still

So this has been an ongoing issue regardless of connection quality. I have Verizon and use a Galaxy S10+. No matter if I get messages from Android users or iPhone gifs always come in as pictures. RCS is enabled. I've reset cache via the boot menu, reset network settings in system settings, and double checked MMS download setting (at max) as well as allowing download from wifi and data. Any new suggestions or ideas? I'm at a loss.

Transferring texts from Samsung Galaxy S10 to computer in readable format?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 07:58 AM PDT

I am very sentimental and have kept my boyfriend and Is texts from when we started dating because there are some convos that remind me of certain memories, almost like a diary. The only issue is its starting to slow down my messages and I'd really like to keep the texts somewhere externally. Ive tried countless programs that always ask me to pay them to download my texts onto my computer. I'm wondering if theres any free way just to transfer these texts to my computer? I'm desperste at this point.
