How can I use custom and default SSL certificate simultaneously in app

    Posted: 19 Mar 2020 02:59 AM PDT

In my app, I have to use custom certificate for making 2 API calls, and default certificate for all other API calls.

But once I pin custom certificate in Volley RequestQueue, all the subsequent calls with default certificate are failing with SSLHandshakeException.

    How can I do this?

Question about minSdkVersion and Play Store publishing

    Posted: 19 Mar 2020 04:03 AM PDT

Let's say that I have an app currently published with minSdkVersion x.

If I publish a new APK with versionCode incremented (+1000) and minSdkVersion y, where y > x, will distribution to devices on the Play Store be like this:

    • devices with Android version with API level >= y get the new APK installed for new installs. And existing installs of the old version are upgraded to the new APK
    • devices with Android version with API level < y get the old APK installed for new installs. And existing installs do not get upgraded to the new version

Long story short: I have an app minSdkVersion 14 but need to make a specific version for API 29+ (Android 10) devices.

Desperately searching for entry-level Android Developer position

    Posted: 18 Mar 2020 05:44 PM PDT

    Friends,

I have been searching full-time for an entry-level Android Developer role for the last few months. I left my career in mechanical engineering (8+ years) to pursue this new field, but it has been very difficult to get any traction. I (barely) failed the Google interview as I attempted to do it both Java and Python. A foolish mistake. I have an app released on the Play Store and a solid resume. I have penetrated into the final round of interviews multiple times with a few companies, however they want more experience even at the junior level. I am supporting my family on savings from my previous career and time is running out. I don't know what else to do ...

Do you know any "feeder" programs that accept new grads (or career change like me)? I realize that Amazon, Facebook, etc. have similar interview styles to Google. I'm tentative to start those due to a one year penalty if I fail. Also, smaller companies are preferred as one the reasons I left mechanical engineering was the mind numbing slow pace of corporate giants.

There must be something out there I am missing. I have talent, an app in the market, and a decade of engineering experience.

Any thoughts for an increasingly nervous new developer?

Creating my own launcher as personnal project (launcher3 fork)

    Posted: 19 Mar 2020 07:01 AM PDT

    Hey everyone,

Due to the lockdown in my country I have to stay home. What a better way to do this than working on a project right ?

The idea is to create a simple launcher with the basic functionnality :

    • having an app drawer
    • home screen with dock
    • possibility to create folder on homescreen
    • possibility to remove app / folder from homescreen
    • bonus : possibility to add icon pack

You see, very basic as I said.
I started from scratch, but yesterday I asked on Lawnchair's community telegram and someone talked to me about Launcher3.

I didn't know this launcher and I discovered that a lot of launcher are based on Launcher3, they are all a fork from it.
This motivate me to do a fork too.

But I have a lot of problems to build the launcher itself. I clone the project, open it with Android Studio and I have errors from gradle :

FAILURE: Build failed with an exception. * What went wrong: Some problems were found with the configuration of task ':generateAospDebugProto'. > Directory 'C:\Users\Charles\AOSPLAUNCHER\build\extracted-include-protos\main' specified for property '$3' does not exist. > Value 'aospDebug Proto source' specified for property '$4' cannot be converted to a file. > Value 'directory 'C:\Users\Charles\AOSPLAUNCHER\build/extracted-protos/aospDebug'' specified for property '$5' cannot be converted to a file. > Value 'directory 'C:\Users\Charles\AOSPLAUNCHER\build/extracted-protos/main'' specified for property '$2' cannot be converted to a file. > Value 'main Proto source' specified for property '$1' cannot be converted to a file.

I think I'm doing wrong but I searched online and I don't find any ressources that can help to start this project or give me clues to understand better.

I am a beginner in Android dev, but trust me I have a really strong motivation I don't want to hear "This is to difficult for you mate, try something else" :)

    Thank you for reading me

Can't find my drawable, but it's definitely there and I've cleaned + invalidated the cache. Other ideas?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2020 06:32 AM PDT

I was following this tutorial on splash screens, and my app keeps throwing a NotFoundException: Drawable com.example.ktest:drawable/splash_background with resource ID #0x7f070077. There seems to be something wrong with this part of my res/values/styles.xml:

    <style name="SplashTheme" parent="Theme.AppCompat.NoActionBar"> <item name="android:windowBackground">@drawable/splash_background</item> </style>

This res/drawable/splash_background.xml file definitely exists in that directory, and is exactly the same as the tutorial file. If I change the value to @drawable/ic_launcher_background I get the a working splash screen (albeit with a different image).

I've cleaned the project to regenerate R.java, I've invalidated the cache, and I'm out of ideas. What's causing this problem?

    UI test vs Integration Test?

    Posted: 18 Mar 2020 08:48 PM PDT

So I often see the pyramid with Integration tests in the middle. What's the distinction between an integration test and a UI test?"Integration tests are tests that test multiple classes in tandem to verify behaviors are correct across classes."So by that logic, using Espresso is automatically an integration test because it tests several interacting components. Yet there is this other category up top for "UI test". Does this just mean that a "UI Test" is an integration test that involves testing the UI?

I am now testing my fragment in isolation with FragmentScenario which is definitely an integration test but is it also a UI test because it involves testing the accuracy of the views in my fragment?

Android Emulator Tablets shows different resolution values when rotated?

Android Emulator Tablets shows different resolution values when rotated?

    Hi,

I'm calculating absolute pixels and device independent pixels using the following code.

     Display display=activity.getWindowManager().getDefaultDisplay(); DisplayMetrics outMetrics=new DisplayMetrics(); display.getMetrics(outMetrics); float density=activity.getResources().getDisplayMetrics().density; //these are absolute pixels int heightPixels = outMetrics.heightPixels; int widthPixels = outMetrics.widthPixels; //these are device independent pixels dpheight = outMetrics.heightPixels/density; dpwidth = outMetrics.widthPixels/density;

    But I'm facing a problem.

Resolution is correct on both phones and tablet emulators but when I rotate the tablet, the resolution is changed and the number of pixel is changed. I know resolution is inverted when we rotate device but number of pixels is changing not inverting.

    For example:

If in landscape resolution is 1920 *1080, it should be 1080 * 1920 when rotated. But when I rotate tablet, resolution number change.

I'm using android emulators. This problem happens with tablets only. I've tested with Pixel C, Nexus 9 and Nexus 7 tablets.

    Can you help on this?

    Thanks

This is tablet resolution in Landscape mode.

This is tablet resolution in Portrait mode.

    Help with auto complete widget

    Posted: 18 Mar 2020 09:37 PM PDT

Hi I'm somewhat new to Android dev and I was hoping I could ask a question. I've not been able to get a single answer anywhere on the internet.

Could someone explain to me how to do this https://developers.google.com/places/android-sdk/autocomplete tutorial but in Kotlin?

Or if you understand it could you explain it to my in Eli5? I'm trying to use either the fragment or the intent. Though I have literally been going for hours and can't get either way to work for me. Thanks in advance.

Invalid ad activity AdMob conspiracy theory

    Posted: 19 Mar 2020 12:12 AM PDT

I have an app on Google Play with around 1k downloads all of which are organic since I don't have any paid promotions for it. So I recently (two days ago) had my account approved for AdMob and integrated the SDK on the same day and released the update on the same day. The update went live yesterday.

I placed ads just like most of the popular apps (50dp banner on bottom of screen, a banner between content etc.) not spamming it at all. I check my active users yesterday and it was at 200 users and my total impression on Admob account was 400 which is ok, I guess.

Anyways, Google blocked my account for Invalid Activity two hours ago. Since my ad placements weren't fraud, I don't really suspect anything and I don't have data to check if someone is clicking my ads repeatedly, so I Googled to see if anyone else is having the same problem.

Turns out a lot of other people are also facing the same issue. I feel like other Ad agencies might be doing this so we use their service instead because I don't think someone would deliberately click on my ads and the only people getting benefit of my account ban would be them.

    Has anyone looked into it?

    Pet shelter app

Hi everyone, this is a pet shelter app. Well, I refactored the pets app from Android Basics Nanodegree Program. At the outset, I implemented MVVM architecture. Then, I added search functionality. This is my first repository in Github: https://github.com/Ahmed-Sellami/pets-MVVM-search

    Any review or tip?

    android messenger IPC not working

    Posted: 18 Mar 2020 07:58 PM PDT

I was following this tutorial from the android doc implementing IPC only for one way communication as given. I copied it exactly one to one and no mistakes or error while building or running. When I start the service using the provided sayHello method, the Toast doesn't appear.

After a lot of Log.e I found that the overriden method onServiceConnected
    of the ServiceConnection
instance wasn't being run which probably should had been done when I invoke the bindService(...) method which I run in the Activity's onCreate, so the onServiceConnected
should had run, but it didn't. I wonder if the mechanism has broken somehow but the IPC isn't working. Again I did copy it exactly from the docs from the activity code to service code to manifest code, but it still doesn't work. Here is the sample app. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

How to create a bottomSheetDrawer like/Elliptical Toolbar?

    Posted: 18 Mar 2020 03:31 PM PDT

How to create a bottomSheetDrawer like/Elliptical Toolbar?

Hi there. Does anybody know how i can achieve this kind of look in android? It reminds me of the various BottomSheetDrawers that i've seen but anchored at the top.

Can i use a custom Toolbar to somehow achieve the shape and then use status bar transparency and an image as the background? Can i use a CardView constrained to the top-right-left of the parent layout and somehow also place it behind the status bar a bit to achieve the same look?

I've never worked with something like this but i'd love to try it out. Maybe there's a library that can do it that i didn't find?

    Thanks in advance.
