Shade Launcher Q - The best of both worlds

    Posted: 18 Feb 2020 02:21 PM PST

    Shade Launcher has been updated!

For those who have not heard of Shade before, it is the spiritual successor to my Rootless Pixel Launcher, bringing the same clean design philosophy but with my twist on it. I released the initial version around a year ago, based on Android Pie. This new version is based on Android Q, and has the best of both Rootless Pixel Launcher 3 and Shade Pie.

First there's some bad news though. I've decided to leave Lollipop and Marshmallow behind. Since the beginning Lollipop has always been my minimum requirement, but backporting all features always drained a lot of my time for a very small amount of users. Nougat is now the minimum requirement, so I can focus on development for the vast majority of devices.

    Changes

    New

    • The new design from Android Q's Launcher3 base, that can be seen on Android One devices.

    • At A Glance and Unread will show on your homescreen at the same time, automatically switching to what is the most important.

    • Suggestions are shown at the top of the app drawer, like Rootless Pixel Launcher.

    • Use any widget underneath the dock, or not, if you prefer a clean look. Whatever you choose, the dock won't disappear.

    • Hiding applications has been streamlined, by dragging an app to the Hide icon on top. Find them again by scrolling down veeeery far in the app drawer.

    • Android Q gesture users can activate the Draw Over Apps permission and the Accessibility Service to get a feature similar to Fluid Navigation Gestures: simply tap the gesture bar to go home, with a smooth animation.

    • Themes are reworked, to work with Android Q's system theme. Choose between Light or Dark mode manually on older Android versions, or let it decide from the wallpaper. Then pick an accent to apply throughout the launcher, for a modern look that's personalized in the iconic shades of Shade.

    • Switch between Google Sans or your default font.

    • See essential app information quickly in the custom app-info view.

    • Fading transition has been polished, using inspiration from the Android Q app closing animation.

    Cleanup

Some features from Pie haven't made a return in Q:

    • App categories, because many people did not like them. They might return in some form in the future, but for now they are gone.

    • The plugin system, except for the customizable News Feed. No other launcher developers seemed to be interested in the idea, so it didn't catch on.

    • QuickSwitch support, as I do not root my phones anymore, so I cannot reliably test and debug my own app. Last year I relied on logs from other users, but that was painful to work with. I'm using the "tap bar to go home" feature myself and it doesn't feel like I'm still missing out on much compared to the stock launcher.

    Questions

    How do I use it?

Install the app either from the Play Store or GitHub. Go into your device's settings, search for the "default home app" option, and assign it to Shade. Then, press home to enter Shade.

Long press the background and go into Home settings to find the list of settings. It is highly recommended to enable Notification dots for full functionality of the launcher.

    FAQ

I have answered many questions on the old Rootless Pixel Launcher threads and Shade Launcher Pie thread. Please check those if your question has already been answered.

I feel Android’s dark mode is not as good as that of iOS. Agree or disagree, and why?

    Posted: 19 Feb 2020 05:22 AM PST

As always, I keep coming back to this wonderful community for my thoughts, doubts and concerns regarding Android. My main phone is Android and use iPhone as my work phone.

Obviously, I am an Android fan but dark mode is something that I find much better on iOS. Android dark mode is mostly dark gray with all the Google apps like Keep, Calendar, Gmail having a dark gray than a true black. On super high resolution screens, it doesn't look as good.

Also, there are settings issues like not an automatic switch for day and night time. This could differ from launcher to launcher. I use OnePlus and we don't even have a simple toggle.

Anyone else also feels that dark mode needs a lot of improvement on Android?

Do you change launchers or prefer using the one that comes with the phone? Which is your favorite Android launcher?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2020 07:33 AM PST

Launchers are perhaps the biggest differentiators in Android from iOS. Do you prefer to change your launchers or just go with what came with the phone?

I used to try different launchers like Microsoft launcher, lawn chair etc but these days I am happy with the OnePlus launcher and don't feel like changing now.

Would be good to hear your experience about using different launchers.

PSA: If you're looking for a cheap alternative to Whitestone screen protectors

    Posted: 19 Feb 2020 03:14 AM PST

i've seen alot of people swear by the whitestone dome in this sub. It's ridiculously expensive imo. if you want the same kind of screen protection and not the ones that use adhesive crap on the edges, try this:

search on aliexpress: uv glass protector + *your phone model*

you can find one for about 5 bucks. yes it takes a while to ship. no it does not come with an installation kit, but imo you dont need one, it's easy enough to install without one anyway. but hey why spend 50 bucks when you can spend 5
