    Super Bowl in 4K?

    Posted: 28 Jan 2020 05:51 AM PST

Apparently Fox Sports is going to be offering the Super Bowl this year in 4K on some platforms. Do we know if they will be supporting 4k through their Android TV app? If not would loading the Fire TV apk work?

Apple TV as default input? (Sony)

    Posted: 28 Jan 2020 08:18 AM PST

Hi. I have a Sony KD55XE9005 which I purchased in 2018. I have an AppleTV connected to it in the HDMI2 port (I had some HDR problems with the AppleTV but for some reason it stopped when I used this port).

I have the TV set up to turn on when the AppleTV turns on (i.e. when I press anything on the Apple TV remote). It also turns off when I turn off the Apple TV, which is great.

The problem is that, when the AppleTV turns on, the TV starts in "TV mode" or whatever it's called, i.e. a cable channel. It does this for 2-3 seconds, then it switches to the HDMI2 port.

It's really annoying when this cable channel shows some show with loud volume. I circumvented it by pressing the channel button a bunch of time until I reached a number where the screen was all black (I guess I don't have access to that channel). So now instead if having some loud volume for 2-3 seconds, I get a black silent screen for 2-3 seconds.

But why is this? Even though I NEVER watch actual TV channels on it (I only use the Apple TV), the TV doesn't start in the HDMI2 input. Can this be changed?

Can I make "restricted" mode persistent?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 04:01 PM PST

I recently picked up an Ematic Jetstream, interested in the restricted mode for Android TV (I was unhappy with the parental control options that Roku had). I think the restricted mode works great...I can give my kids access to the streaming apps they care about, without giving them access to all apps and settings, etc.

However, the restricted mode only works when you enable it. Which means if my wife and I watch something on normal mode, we have to remember to re-enable the restricted mode before putting the box to sleep.

Is there a way to set the "default" mode to restricted, so that once the box goes to sleep or is powered down, it automatically comes back on in restricted mode? I'd assume there is some way to run a script at boot that does this, as even when you power-cycle the box from restricted mode, it actually comes back up in normal, then quickly switches to restricted. I just want it to do that every time, regardless of what previous state it was in.

    Thanks!

    Playing youtube via Google home

    Posted: 28 Jan 2020 01:02 AM PST

    Hi,

I have a Mi box S connected to my TV and trying to use Google home to get things playing on it.

But it never plays the right thing. I can tell it to play a video with pretty unique names and it just plays something random that contains a few of those words.

Is anyone else having this problem? Is there a solution?

    Thanks

New to Shield TV, Twitch App won't install

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 09:25 AM PST

Hey all I just bought the 2019 Shield TV (not Pro) to replace my Fire TV stick. It's really fast and responsive but the biggest problem I'm having is the Google Play Store is saying my device isn't compatible with this version. Did Twitch pull Android TV support? Or am I running into a bug or something?

Is anyone using the 2019 Shield (tube) with HDHomeRun + PVR?

I'm wondering if the SD card slot can handle the PVR functionality of HDHR.

2015 Shield TV Pro won't install Experience 8.0.2

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 08:46 AM PST

I have tried five times now to update to Shield Experience 8.0.2.

It downloads fine, verifies, and then I tell it to reboot to install. Progress bar gets maybe a quarter of the way through and then it just reboots. Once back up and running I can check and see I'm still on 8.0.1 and it tells me there is an update available again. Rinse, repeat.

I've never had an issue with upgrades before on my Shield TV over all these years until now. Anyone else seeing the same thing?

Skystream android TV media player for sale in the US? 8K for $125 US

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 11:36 AM PST

I was noodling around some of the stuff I never use on my Fire Cube like Pluto TV and I watched a few minutes of news on the UK Skystream station? (I am in the US.) And I started getting email from them (I swear I didn't give them my email, they must've got from Amazon?) Anyway, they seem to sell a version 3 for like $500 on Amazon US. However the email I received was for a Skystream branded generation 4 8K capable Skystream android media player for $125 US UPS priority shipping included. Is this an android TV and what's up with a UK broadcaster selling presumably hardware for UK licensed media (as well as the usual apps, in fact anything in the Google play store and some other place like Pure APK?) With this thing be of any use in the US?

Upgrade to Android TV or Get a New TV and keep my Nvida Sheild

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 11:29 AM PST

    Hi Everyone,

I currently have a (about 8-10 yr old) 55' Sony TV which I currently use with my Nvidia Shield. One pro that I like about my TV is that my stock remote (automatically) worked with my Nvidia shield which was super handy, considering the Nvidia remote doesn't allow for power on/off or TV volume control. I wanted to upgrade to a 65 inch and found a Hisense Android TV for 399.99 at best buy - link below. Thought that was a crazy deal. I love the shield and use it for streaming as well as gaming (few android but mostly emulators) and wanted to see if people had a good or bad experience with a built in android TV set up. Would someone coming from a shield view it as a downgrade? Should i pony up more since I am relying on the TV software (android) as well as the components? any help would be appreciated!
