Apps on Android used to be able to read clipboard data and collect IMEI numbers. What else can apps still do that we don't know about?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 05:50 PM PST

Android 10 brought a lot of much-needed privacy improvements by restricting access to background activity launches, clipboard, serial number, IMEI, camera metadata, and WiFi control, and also introduced other privacy features such as scoped storage and randomised MAC addresses.

But I was wondering, are there still other things that apps can do without our permission?

Motorola's Hyper One Smartphone is Only $399. Has no notch, uses pop-up camera

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 07:54 AM PST

In my opinion, stock android is overrated. In fact, I have a few complaints about it.

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 01:13 PM PST

I don't think that this counts as a rant, rather constructive criticism (?). But I feel that if I can express my opinion about an Android device, it should be r/android – especially considering the brand this post is based on lol. Why not go to r/GooglePixel, you ask? Try saying something negative there: downvotes and blind eyes. Anyway...

My complaints stem mainly from me missing aspects of my old Huawei. Some of these seem nitpicky, sure, but UIs should be as streamlined and as user-friendly as possible. Being nitpicky is, perhaps, the best way to identify ways of improving it. My Pixel is also missing things that my old Huawei had so I can't help but feel that Google has become somewhat complacent. So here are my complaints:

An easier way of clearing all notifications. Huawei has a bin icon where an in-screen fingerprint scanner would be making it much easier for me whose left-handed.

I can't adjust the font size of text messages. Reverse pinching is no help nor is 'settings'.

When I'm composing text messages, the text box doesn't expand very much so proofreading long text messages is a bit inconvenient.

    No screen recording.

I can't mirror images in Google photos. That seems so incredibly basic but no, I have to install a 3rd party app to do so. My old Huawei also allowed me to pixelate parts of images irony.

    Other things:

    1. A glitch I've noticed that occurs upon using the home Google search bar after exiting an app. The Google search bar simply fails to work. You have to close the app then reopen it to use it.

    2. This is the only phone I've had that hasn't worked very well with my home WiFi. Every few minutes or so, videos will buffer and Reddit thumbnails and comments will fail to load etc..

    DISCLAIMER:

These are my personal issues with my phone which I do, in fact, like. I am entitled to an opinion, as you are too, and it is alright for them to differ from each other.

Also, I'd be happy if I'm wrong about any of these.

So... Do you guys have any (software) complaints?

Edit: I believe the Pixel brand rests on two things:

    1. Its camera which, I admit, is rather crispy.

    2. Its UI which is, as I've said, very underwhelming.

The competition is "catching up" on both fronts. Will Pixel become irrelevant? No. Is it becoming less competitive? Perhaps.

Edit: Apparently themes will be coming to my Pixel in December so that will get crossed off the list when the time comes.

Oh, and my complaints predominantly stem from Google and its apps as it happens.

    Android Bluetooth volume fix

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 04:30 PM PST

So after struggling with low Bluetooth volume on my note 9 for months, I finally fixed it.

In short, make sure the disable absolute volume toggle is on in developer options. Also a good idea to switch avrcp to 4.6 while you're there.

After that I reset all wireless settings (Bluetooth, wifi, mobile data). After this repair your device and verify that media volume sync is enabled in Bluetooth settings.

Hopefully this helps somebody out, dealing with low volume issues is infuriating.

Are there any bezeless phones with proportional bezels? Meaning no thicker chin?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 12:15 AM PST

Before anyone says "why does it matter", I'm super weird and I like when things are proportional.

I currently have the One Plus 7 Pro and I love the no compromise, bezeless display. But the chin is slightly larger/thicker than the side and top bezel. I also don't care for the "the chin is still smaller or equal to the iPhones bottom bezel" argument. In my opinion I like how the iPhone XR's (bezels are HUGE) bezels are all the same size and proportional.
