Google can't search inside its own phone

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 06:12 PM PST

Using the pixel launcher on my Pixel 2, the Google search widget prioritizes web results, and installed apps go to the bottom of the list, hidden behind the keyboard. It doesn't search for contacts or local files at all.

Shouldn't a phone's search function primarily look for installed apps and contacts?

The iPhone's spotlight search is very intuitive and you can do a quick search by swiping down on the home screen.

YouTube Killed Double Tap on Mobile Browsers!

YouTube killed the double tap feature on mobile browser wherein you could fast-forward or rewind by tapping the video twice on either left or the right side.

It's still available on the app but I'm sure this is done to switch users away from the mobile browser and use their app instead!

Please check your google play balance as they are improperly stealing your money.

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 05:03 PM PST

    Bold claim...hear me out.

I'll try to keep this short yet I will copy/paste the emails I've sent and received from google. So yesterday I noticed my balance had gone from about $303 down to $31. "Why such a balance?" Back in like 2014, my entire family upgraded phones, grandparents too, and there was a promotion where you got a $50 play store credit. My mom nor grandparents care about apps, so I myself got 4 of those $50 credits. I have the rewards app, and get them fairly often. The app shows I've made just under $150. That's $350, I guess I've spent about $50 and thus $300ish.

So yesterday I notice my balance down at $31. Quick google and I'm seeing a few blog and even reddit posts on the subject that the google rewards program/app is going to a 1 year rolling period for funds expiring. If you earn $0.18 today, that exact amount expire a year from today. What about my gift card funds?

I find an online chat, literally as I was walking into work. It almost seemed like English was their second language. I kept saying a majority of my funds removed were from gift cards. After a couple back and forths, they said they needed to look at things, and then that they would need a couple minutes. I was then in work, didn't respond and below is the email I got.

Thank you for contacting Google Support Team.

This email is in reference to the issue that you are facing with related to the missing Play rewards.

I have checked this with a specialist the Gift cards you were referring to were promotional Gift cards. I'd like to inform you that this is working as intended as per the old terms and conditions of Google Opinion Rewards. Let me help you understand how.

Earlier, the balance used to expire in 365 days according to the date of the issuance of the last balance added. For example: The last balance added on 1st Oct. 2017, as a result all the previous balance would expire on 1st Oct. 2018. This was something which gave us an extension of using the Play Balance for a longer period.

But due to changes in the terms and conditions of Google Opinion Rewards in the month of December 2018, each balance added, will be treated and expired separately, basis the date of issuance. Please find the link to the terms and conditions here (Point 3): https://play.google.com/intl/en_us/about/offer-terms/

This means only a portion would expire in 365 days as according to its own date of issuance.

As a result, balances which were supposed to be expired last year, are expiring now.

We offer our sincere apologies about this.

We understand that there were no notification of balance being expired. If you are still unhappy about the play balance expiration, please share

    Amount of expired opinion rewards

    Email of associated account

Once I have the screenshots, I will be more then happy to look in to this for you. Thanks for understanding.

Thanks! (name removed) The Google Support Team

Not happy, I sent the below email last night....

Thanks for getting back to me. I don't recall if you were the person I quickly chatted with via my cell phone and a live chat system or not, so let me catch you up. Sometime in the last couple days, I've lost about $270 from my play store balance. So yes, I am very unhappy. A bulk of that, I believe probably $200, was from gift cards. You can probably see better than my several year old memory, but these were given to me as a gift. Should be 4 separate $50 gift cards, back in like 2014 or so. Online right now, both Target and Walmart are selling Google Play store gift cards that clearly say "funds never expire." Secondly I live in Florida, a state which has a law against the balance on a gift card ever expiring. Link: https://www.flsenate.gov/Laws/Statutes/2012/501.95

Years back, gift cards in general would be valid for about a year, and then have fine print like "$2 monthly service fee after the first 12 months." FL passed a law to prevent that, which is why shortly after that law, gift cards would say "except where prohibited by law."

So that's my first issue, I don't see how I can have that $200 taken away from me. Up above in your email you say, " But due to changes in the terms and conditions of Google Opinion Rewards in the month of December 2018 " ...well those gift cards were not part of Google Opinion Rewards, thus again, I'm not seeing how this is acceptable.

Second, I understand the "new" policy, and the concept of a revolving 1 year window. I fully get that for funds from google rewards. Your own app, doesn't seem to understand that though. Below are two screenshots. One shows my current balance after a majority of my funds were stolen. I'm left with $31.75. That same screenshot shows that all of that will expire in a couple days. That's not possible when I'm getting a survey every couple days. I can't show you a years worth of my rewards (but I would think you can easily view that on your side), without attaching like 20 screenshots, but the second screenshot shows I've done 9 surveys in the last 3 weeks. I'm made absolutely zero purchases in the last 3 weeks, so how can the app say I will have a zero balance as of 12/10/2019?

I've long been a huge Google and Android support, but this whole situation is leaving me confused and rather frustrated, so hopefully you can assist. Thanks.

I expected a quick email early this AM, but didn't get a reply until 6:30pm eastern. That is below....

    Thanks for your reply.

We're looking into this issue and we will update you as soon as we have determined the next steps or have more details.

I may be in touch to request more information about this issue.

I really appreciate your continued patience and cooperation as we work to resolve this situation.

    Thanks! The Google Support Team

For added bonus BS, I got another survey while at dinner, did it, checked my balance and it says that new money earned today, also expires in 4 days.

Does any Android fan here prefer the Homescreen app only layout (as used in iOS) to the traditional app drawer approach of stock Android?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 06:58 PM PST

I recently moved to the iOS all app look. I always used app drawer as long as I can remember, then i thought of experimenting, and somehow putting apps in folders was a much quicker option than searching in the drawer. For example, I have 4-5 news app (and keep changing every few months), so in app drawer, first I need to decide which app to open, search that or else browse through the whole drawer and end up opening some other app instead of the one I planned earlier. With folders on homescreen, simply open the news folder browse through only those apps.

Theoretically, I always thought that app drawer is a better and organized option but my experience taught me otherwise.

For Audio/Video, what is your preferred time statistic to be displayed?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 10:29 AM PST

Noticed my podcast app on my phone did something I don't see often on the lock screen. It showed the time in "##/##m" format. In minutes it would show 25/29m, for example, and as it would play then it proceed to 26/28m, so would have to calculate total time if I ever needed it.

Between all my devices and apps running podcasts, video clips, movies, songs and various other audio/video...Was wondering what does r/Android prefer when it comes to what is displayed on the device as far as potential candidates for data regarding time:

    A. Time Elapsed B. Time Remaining C. Total Time

Does this change depending on the media? Whether it's on a certain screen? Watching with others? What's your order preference? Did I forget one?...maybe the real world time when the media would end?

PSA: Google finally added the swipe down gesture to stock Android

    Posted: 05 Dec 2019 10:57 PM PST

I'm not kidding, I had a small update this morning, ~150mb, and it added the gesture to open the notifications.

It's not mentioned even in the settings or in the changelog, nowhere.
