| New Android User - A few Questions. Posted: 04 Dec 2019 03:27 AM PST Hi guys, after using my iPhone for 6 years straight, i decided to get an Android Phone again. As you can imagine, i know pretty much nothing. I've found out that you can customize basically the Start Screen by using Launchers and Icon Packs, and i absolutely love it! But when researching that, and in general, i came across a few things i don't quite understand yet, so i think i'll find answers here. -Rooting: Is it same as Jailbreaking, where you lose warranty? I saw that quite a few Apps require a root... But is the System still as save and do i still have warranty should i decide to root it? Or should i just not root it as long as there's still warranty? Especially regarding Online Banking and stuff. -Ad Blocking: How do i block the entirety of Ads, including In-App-Ads on Android? This is the main reason i got an Android in the first place. It's absolutely vital for me to be able to block especially the YouTube Ads. I much rather support the Creators with a Twitch Subscription, buying Merch or so. But having 2 unskippable 15-seconds-ads before every video that are obnoxiously loud and overcompressed, just to have the Video interrupted by more ads every 2 minutes? Nah fam, not having it at all. -Not App Store Apps: So i've learned that you can download and use entire App Stores that are not the Google Play Store; and through them even more Apps. If you do that: Are you still safe? Again, especially regarding Online Banking etc. Are those "Third Party Apps" dangerous / can spy on "Official" Apps? -After official Updates: When the official Updates stop, i should be able to install the newest / another Android Version myself, right? | How to verify smartphone lifetime usage? Posted: 04 Dec 2019 03:10 AM PST I received my amazon order for a Samsung A70 but the plastic seal or wrap was not there. The phone is still wrapped in plastic phones usually come in. I'm guessing someone changed their mind and returned it. How do I verify the panel age or battery age? That should be a good indication how old or new the phone is right? If you have other suggestions please let me know. I understand sometimes retailers have to do this because it's still really a new item that has been returned. EDIT: So we've learned there are lots of data points for battery. There is also amount of bytes written. This reminds me of the Samsung disk utility/software. It tells you the total bytes written on your SSD. If you are not familiar with rg, it is a command line utility called "ripgrep". It's a lot like grep but it seems faster to me and the output is easier on the eyes. | TWRP - Rebooted after wipe - No recovery! Posted: 04 Dec 2019 05:21 AM PST Hi all, just posted this in the LineageOS sub, but found this and think it may fit better here. I'm having an issue, largely due to my own stupidity, that I'm hoping someone can help me with. Please let me now if I should direct my question elsewhere. I was having trouble getting TWRP to work on my OnePlus 6. I ended up being able to open it only using 'fastboot boot' for the 'twrp-3.x.img', rather than 'fastboot flash recovery' for the 'twrp-installer-3.x.zip' that were recommended. Because of this, I was able to use TWRP, but it was not actually installed. I figured I could work around that and likely could have, but then I wiped my system and accidentally rebooted in TWRP. This results in a continuous boot to Fastboot mode, so no ADB, Fastboot isn't being recognized and I have no recovery... good times. Anyone know a way around this? Edit: Using hardware buttons to factory reset doesn't seem to be working; I hold down the button combos and it just boots to Fastboot. [link] [comments] |

| Samsung Note 5 won't charge or turn on Posted: 04 Dec 2019 08:19 AM PST Looks like battery died (thought I plugged it in but I guess I didn't). Will not charge or turn on. Tried holding down volume and power button per google but no luck. Wireless charger dock detects the phone but no sign of life on the phone or any light on it. | Play store not updating itself, while Play services do Posted: 04 Dec 2019 10:12 AM PST Hi all I've already posted this question in r/androidtv but couldn't find an useful advice at the moment My issue: on my Android TV Oreo certified device the Play Store is stuck to version 10.5.10 : if I try to force-update it , it says it is up to date, but the current version went to 17.x. Strangely the Play services can update regularly but that does not affect the app. I'll save you all the troubleshooting steps I made but I can say that after three factory resets and two firmware updates the issue is still persistent. I have been googling for the last 2 hours and I have not been able to find any help whatsoever so I have decided to post. | Google Play Services wont update Posted: 04 Dec 2019 08:42 AM PST So yesterday I couldn't use maps and was told update play services to use maps but there is no available update. I have tried uninstalling back to factory as advised online but it says it has being unsuccessful. I have put the phone in safe mode but can't do nothing with play services. | Posted: 04 Dec 2019 08:25 AM PST I have a stock Moto G5 Plus running Android 8.1.0 with Straight Talk Wireless. Three days ago, my phone started acting oddly. When someone in my contacts texts me, the text does not show up in our thread. Instead, it shows up in a different established thread. As in Friend A and I have a text thread, and Friend B and I have a text thread. Friend A texts me, and their message shows up in Friend B's thread. Friend B doesn't seem to receive the messages. If I go back and reply to Friend A's text, their reply still comes through Friend B. Today, my phone appears to be calling random numbers, unbeknownst to me. It doesn't show up in my call history. The only reason I know is because people keep calling me back to ask who I am, calling them. Someone suggested that I reset my app preferences, but that didn't help. Turned off/on again, etc. What's going on here? Do I have a virus? [link] [comments] |

| Posted: 04 Dec 2019 08:18 AM PST I'm trying to find a method or app that will tell the phone to disconnect from the current wifi network but not disable wifi. The use case is if I walk far enough away from the AP that my phone still receives signal but not enough to be usable. The wifi icon still shows but has the exclamation next to it. | Not getting any group messages from iOS and group messages from android behave funny Posted: 04 Dec 2019 08:15 AM PST OK, I have searched the internet for this, as well as reddit, and I keep getting results with the opposite problem (iOS not getting group chats from android, or at all).. I'm sure this is simple and comes up a lot, but I apparently suck at googling today... If someone can point me in the right direction, that's all I need, and I'll gladly take this down if desired. I'm not sure if this is an issue with my settings or not, but I assume it is. I'm not new to, or inexperienced with, Android by any stretch - I've rooted and flashed in the past, and I have fixed about a dozen devices for friends over the years (software and hardware), but this one has me completely stumped.. I have been on android since my first smartphone, and this is the first time I am actively aware of having this issue (because nobody texts me, really..), but my BF's whole family, and most of our mutual friends, use iPhones, and they group message to make plans.. A lot... and I get exactly zero of these messages. I've gotten irritated by this, and want to fix it. Being out of the loop for everything sucks. Potentially relevant information: I doubt my number is linked to an apple account because I've had the same number for at least a decade, and have never owned an apple product. I have no idea how to find out, but I read a troubleshooting article about this being a possible cause. The phone I am using now is a universally unlocked razer phone 2, about 2 months old, running Pie 9.0 on cricket GSM network. No carrier bloatware. I know for a fact that I did not change any message settings when I did my setup, other than changing the default SMS handler. I do have developer options enabled, but this time I only enabled them for the "stay awake when charging" option and "mobile data always active", and haven't messed with anything else. I doubt these caused the problem. Unlike some of my other devices in the past, this one does not have a "SIM toolkit" app or anything like it that I can find. The phone I had before this had the same issue (carrier-unlocked moto g6, also cricket GSM). I used a variety of SMS programs on that one (trying to find a good one that didn't lag when texting iOS/off carrier), and none of them worked with group. This phone was NOT new when I started messing around with SMS apps, so it is possible I had some setting on that one changed. I still have the device, and it works (no sound, though) so I can check anything that might be a factor. I currently use signal as my default SMS handler, but have used a variety of other handlers in the past with the same result. I seem to get initial group texts from other android users, but when I reply it doesn't go to the group, just the person who sent the original message. I do not receive any follow-up messages from other people who were included. Please let me know if more info is needed, and thank you in advance for any help offered! [link] [comments] |

I tried restarting my phone, but it didn't work, it won't turn off. My touch screen is working, because, when I enter my code it vibrates. I can still hear when people call me, but can't answer. Hi peeps, since having two different accounts w/ different countries is beneficial when looking for apps that aren't available in your home country and also some prices might differ. I was wondering if that was a problem since I am living (obviously) in only one of these countries. I was browsing the internet for ages and couldn't find any information regarding my question. | Posted: 04 Dec 2019 05:09 AM PST Hello, I bought a new Samsung S8+ for the lowest price on the internet and when it arrived, it was already configured with german language and german region. kg state was turn on prenormal at the begining but after i did a wipe data/factory reset it turns on always checking. And when I try to full factory reset with odin (AP,BL,CP,CSC files) i always get an error. I tried with different versions of Odin and different firmware. I just want to check if there is any hidden malware or rootkit behing my bootloader or as a part of the system. Any suggestions? [link] [comments] |

I use an Oreo Android TV certified device. Issue: Play store is stuck to version 10.5.10 while version 17.x is already out for download Strangely the Play services are updating regularly . Basically I've done whatever it's suggested to troubleshoot the issue, including three factory resets and two firmware updates, but the issue is still persistent. | Posted: 04 Dec 2019 10:04 AM PST I have turned off imessaging, deregistered on apples website. Put my friends sim card in that has never used an iPhone, did the same to him. Put in an AT&T sim card from another friend and everything worked right, and he actually was using an iPhone. So it isn't an issue with my SIM or numbers previous attachment to imessage. I know that it's an issue with my carrier and essentials compatibility. They told me at the store that there would be issues with phones from outside of their selection, but they basically only sell iPhones and galaxies and I wanted something cheaper. I picked up a used essential phone for $50. I'm with Cspire which is a lesser known carrier in the southern states in America. I have switched off VoLTE, still had the same issue. The strange thing is when I am on LTE, if I make a call all the texts that have been waiting to go in and out suddenly come in. So the problem is that everything works on 3G, texting doesn't work on LTE until I make a phone call. If this is just something I have to deal with I'll probably still keep the phone anyways because it's awesome, but I do use my LTE hotspot for gaming. I realize there's probably just a frequency that my carrier doesn't use that match essential phone, buy hopefully someone can help. Thank you! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 04 Dec 2019 03:38 AM PST Hey, just got a Huawei Y6 2019 and everytime I change apps even for a second, when I go back to my original app it reloads completely. This is super annoying for pokemon go and my music app and everything else because it resets what I'm listening to or what I'm reading in chrome ect... I've been searching for a fix for like an hour but all of the 'fixes' I've found don't work or I can't find the settings to change at all. Any ideas? [link] [comments] |
