Engineer from Samsung says chipset vendors are to blame for limited Android updates

/u/LTEX90: "I can comment on why devices usually get 2 major OS upgrades.

It's simply that chipset vendors no longer write kernels and drivers for us to implement in our devices.

It is infeasible for us to write our own kernels for all components in the device without violating patents.

If we owned all the patents, sure we will do it. I will do it. I have a Note 9 as my personal device as well and I would hate for it to not get new features after 2 years."

It's always struck me as odd that PC-chipped computers generally don't have a software upgrade limit. Their operating systems often continue to receive upgrades far best their usable lifespan. I can't help but wonder if Qualcomm was the source of all evil for the industry trend we find ourselves in now.

Please correct if I or this pseudonymous Samsung employee are wrong.

Copy/share Overview context feature is among the best Android features that are Pixel exclusives imo

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 10:29 AM PST

I didn't care that much when it was introduced, but since started using my Pixel 2 XL and the feature there's literally not a single day that I don't use it. It's a powerful kinda tool that can copy or sometimes interact with almost any paragraph w/wo photos that looks like English, which is a huge part of smartphone experience.

Why everyday? well I'm the designated go-down-pick-up UberEats at work (read: hey Tim while your down smoking later can you pick up my UberEats? Yay thanks!), and every damn time they send screenshots of the drivers phone number instead of sending a text, that means every damn time I have to switch back and forth to get the number into Phone ap... oh wait, now with Overview context copy feature it's pretty much an effortless experience: go into overview, then select the numbers wherever they are within the window and call directly right there.

Just realized it reads like a weird ad lol but really I love it

PSA: Pixel December 2019 update might cause issues if you have gesture navigation enabled; workaround included

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 04:39 AM PST

TL;WR: If the December 2019 Pixel update causes your Pixel Launcher to crash repeatedly, try to somehow navigate into Settings - System - Gestures - System navigation and turn on 3-Button navigation. This stopped crashes for me immediately.

    ***********

I own a Pixel 3 and run Android 10 on it, with full gesture navigation enabled. I prefer using Nova Launcher, but have been forced to use the Pixel Launcher since updating to Android 10 because Android 10 didn't support gesture navigation for third-party launchers when it was released (and I wanted the gestures more than I wanted Nova).

Today, I was offered the December 2019 update, which allows gesture navigation for third-party launchers. Big yay. Except not, at least for a moment.

The update ran without giving any indication of a problem, but when I rebooted my phone, Pixel Launcher kept crashing, over and over again. Many of us know what this means, it's a complete nightmare. I started off by killing the launcher and the Google app itself via ADB, but to no avaial. I then tried to figure out how to backup some of my app data when I had another thought, I tried it, and it worked.

You have to have nimble fingers for this to work, and it's a lot of tapping. But I was able to swipe down the notification shade, open the settings, and navigate to the system navigation menu (Settings - System - Gestures - System navigation). There, I turned on 3-button navigation, and the crashes stopped immediately.

I'm still a bit wary of switching gestures back on, but at least I didn't have to reset my phone.

I hope this helps anyone who runs into the same issue.
